Chapter 202: He’s Fucking Missing!

Kang Guanyu blinked, startled, as though he had just realized that he had said something he shouldn’t. Under Tak Jung-Hwa’s sharp smile and unrelenting stare, he fidgeted in his seat restlessly. "Like... Just like..."

"What?" Tak Jung-Hwa arched his brow and teased him. "You acting like this makes me all the more curious, you know."

Kang Guanyu let out a hollow laugh and scratched his head, grimacing. "I–It’s not really inappropriate to spread someone’s private life, is it...?"

The corner of Tak Jung-Hwa’s lips twitched, amused. This silly lad, just where did he get the confidence to say something like this after everything he had said and done? Tak Jung-Hwa would not mind if he had not discovered anything, but now that Kang Guanyu had plastered Mu Yuze’s Alpha with the label of ’mysterious’, if he did not dig out the truth, then his surname was not Tak!

Alas, before he could wheedle out any hint or answer, the telephone inside the office rang and Kang Guanyu, who was breaking out in cold sweat, instantly sprung up as if he had been granted a second life.

"Me me me!" He cried out passionately as he zoomed across the room to where the telephone was. "Let me take that!"

The other officers were speechless. "Nobody will snatch it from you!"

Kang Guanyu skidded to a halt and grabbed the telephone handle. All of his movement was done very rapidly like a terrified hamster burrowing into his nest. His heart was still jackrabbiting in his chest and he wiped the sweat off his forehead. He had decided, whoever was on the other side of the line would be his good friend for life! A sworn brother or sister!

"Hello?" He answered the phone with an especially sweet voice. "Violent Crime Division, how may I help you?"

"Where the fuck is Li Zhi?! Why didn’t he answer the damn phone?!" The person on the other side of the phone was none other than Rong Simo, Captain Rong of the Narcotics Division. And he sounded... angry. Extremely angry.

Uh-oh, Kang Guanyu shrunk his neck in fear and immediately took back his words. N–ope, can’t afford to have a good brother like Captain Rong. Thank you very much!

Just in time, Li Zhi, who had just returned from a short bathroom break, was beckoned enthusiastically by Kang Guanyu to come over. The man was wailing silently as he pulled up the corner of his eyes to make a vicious face. The corner of Li Zhi’s lips almost twitched into a smile from seeing his silly antics. He helplessly took over the phone from Kang Guanyu while patting his fluffy hair in passing. "... Captain Rong? How is Wu Yuan?"

"Good... Li Zhi. You have a really good subordinate!" Rong Simo was so pissed that he laughed out loud.

Li Zhi frowned, confused. "What are you talking about?"

Rong Simo was really going to be angered to death. He recounted what had happened through gritted teeth.

Early the previous morning, Wu Yuan had manifested without any warning and noticing how the little guy looked like he was suffering so much, they had decided to bring him to the hospital. At that time, aside from Wu Yuan and Rong Simo, there were only two other officers who tagged along – one from the Narcotics Division who was responsible for watching over Wu Yuan in the back seat, and another little officer who drove them there.

Now, it had been almost thirty hours since Wu Yuan entered the Pheromones Department’s isolation ward and that was just how long Rong Simo had been waiting outside. His goal was only one: he wanted to see if Wu Yuan’s manifestation would jolt his lost memory. If that was the case, then they would be able to get a new crucial lead about the culprit they were chasing after!

And finally, after a tiring and arduous wait, he got the news that Wu Yuan’s condition had stabilized. But this good news was soon shadowed by a bad one – making an official visit was simply impossible.

Frustrated, Rong Simo left his subordinate to keep watch and intended to return to the Bureau to freshen up a bit. But much to his surprise, he could not find the little officer who was supposed to drive the car anywhere!

Rong Simo had just been bombarded with one bad news after another. First, they found traces of various drugs in the body of a high-schooler who could not be more ordinary. The same high-schooler was also supposed to be their main link to solve Old Five’s murder case, yet now the little guy was down and the doctor had strictly told him that Wu Yuan needed to be quarantined for the next few days, at least until his high fever subsided and he was lucid enough to recognize who was standing in front of him.

What did it mean? It meant that the progress of the investigation was stuck just like that! They were going to miss out the golden 48 hours due to this ridiculous yet bizarre reason!

How was he supposed to hold back his anger?!

Rong Simo had stayed awake for more than thirty hours. He was exhausted, frustrated and vexed, and when he discovered that the little officer who should have been on standby in the police car was missing with the aforementioned car locked, it became the final nail in the coffin and all of those negative emotions snowballed into a massive anger that shot up to his head!

What happened after that was history. He punched in Li Zhi’s number without a second thought to vent this bellyful of anger that was ready to overflow!

"Not there?" Li Zhi’s frown deepened. Officers were not supposed to leave their position during work hours. The fact that the little officer had disappeared on his own without informing anyone was already considered a dereliction of duty. However, Li Zhi had a nagging suspicion that something sounded off about this. "How about the bathroom? Maybe he’s having a stomachache?"

"No shit, Sherlock!" Rong Simo spat out. "Do you think I haven’t checked the bathroom? He’s fucking missing!"

Li Zhi crooked his finger toward Kang Guanyu who was trying to listen in on the conversation. He closed the phone speaker with his palm and told the other man, "Check the officer who drove Captain Rong to the hospital yesterday and see where he has gone to. If he’s in the Bureau, tell him to come see me right away."

Kang Guanyu gave an ’OK’ gesture and hurried to do his job. Li Zhi then told the fuming Captain, "Wait for a moment, Captain Rong. I’ve told my people to check it. If it’s indeed an error, then it is negligence on my part. I will teach him a severe lesson so he won’t be so undisciplined next time."

Captain Rong sneered. "You’d better give me a satisfactory answer."

Kang Guanyu returned less than five minutes later with a weird look on his face.

Li Zhi’s heart gave a jolt for some inexplicable reason. "What’s wrong?"

"Captain, that officer..." Kang Guanyu stuttered out. "He’s supposed to be on leave these past few days because of pneumonia. Are you sure that the one who drove Captain Rong is really him...?"
