Versatile: Alternate World
Chapter 1018: To the End of the World Where Both Worlds Meet (III)
Based on my estimation, it should be 4 days since me and Cath Palug began to travel on the road. Yes, I just estimated it as of right now, we are no longer in the cityscape. Instead, we have arrived on a barren wasteland full of metal scraps here and there. It would be more precise to say that this place is like a massive scrapyard.
The road is still present but unlike the smooth roads before when we were still in the city, the roads here are broken and at times pretty much riddled with holes, making the ride pretty bumpy and annoying.
Right now, we just stop for a while as the engine of the trike might overheat so I have to let it cool down for a bit. Otherwise, it might result in breaking down while we are traveling. In the meantime, I am checking the surroundings for any dangers.
There are indeed some monsters from time to time that emerge on the street and start attacking but it is a rare thing to happen so they only appear once in a while. But right now, there are more and more of the junk denizens in the area. If I had not decided to set up traps, those monsters would start attacking us.
Perhaps because the area is full of scraps this place has become a natural habitat area of the junk denizens. Not only it was a perfect place for them to find body replacements, but perhaps that place was also considered by them as a natural area for them to find food they wanted to eat. I cannot rule out that they eat junk though they do actively try to hunt me down. I am still not sure what they deal with but I have no idea and have no time to study them completely. All I can do is try to repel them and stop them from attacking us and breaking the trike.
"Oy, dumb*ss, the engine seems to have cooled down. How about we hit the road now?!"
I look back at the direction of Cath Palug who is waiting at the trike. As much as this foul-mouthed creature talks sh*t like this, I came to have gotten used to the presence of this guy. Despite talking foul, at least this guy is true to his nature and naturally hates humans to his core and he is not just acting nice for the sake of acting as one. And I prefer that than to be with someone who knows how to compliment others and act nice when in reality, they are totally bad to the core and they are silently cursing at your existence.
"Just a second, gonna have to finish this up for a bit."
"Hurry it up, you are so slow. You should learn to read the time."
"Yes, yes. Stop nagging. I know, I know."
Returning to the Trike, the engine has indeed cooled down just like Cath Palug said so. I don’t want to waste my time here so after hydrating myself, I started to move again.
The light that I have been following for quite some time has been shining for quite some time already and yet it feels like I am not yet reaching it anytime soon. Even with the speed we have, it is not fast enough to reach it in a short time.
As we continued to travel at the same speed as I was doing before, the ground shook and the surrounding scraps started to crumble and fall from their piles. Even the junk denizens who are busy with their business start hiding and leaving their previous posts.
"You detect something, Cath Palug."
"Yeah. And a nasty big f*cker at that. Look over there on your left."
I turned to the direction Cath Palug pointed and sure enough, a monster of some sort with rotating gears all over its body, moving like a worm appeared and devoured the heaps and piles of junk as it bulldozed through the land.
Seeing its size is quite big, that guy is a hard monster to evade. Thankfully, it seems to be far in the distance and has no interest in us so we just continue at the usual pace. Of course, we didn’t rule out the possibility that this monster would suddenly change its course and instead try to attack us.
As we continue to move along on the road, I can feel the tremors that was caused by the monster getting bigger and bigger.
"Increase your speed. Or that bugger will eat both of us! If only I could return to my former body form then I would have killed it instead!"
Hearing Cath Palug’s warning, I didn’t hesitate to comply with his order and increase the speed of the Trike. I look back to where the monster was currently cruising along and soon enough, it is now nearby and is bulldozing both the ground and the junk piles without any signs of stopping.
"Damn, Merlin and the Lady of the Lake should have at least warned me something like this is present here!" I grumbled as I increased the speed to the maximum output.
The speed of the trike increased however the distance between us and the monster chasing us was decreasing. If I slow down in just the slightest the big monster will chow us down immediately.
I pulled the Devourer changed the form into a cannon and started blasting it to deter it away from chasing us. I didn’t need to kill it, I only needed to make it flee or deter its way from chasing us.
BOOM!
As soon as the cannon was about to hit the giant worm-like monster, a barrier appeared to have destroyed the cannonball I shot then disappeared once more. The monster was not affected and just continued to chase us down without halting.
"Damn, a barrier? And even the cannonball that has Defense Penetrating capabilities didn’t even manage to destroy? This is not a good thing."
Since this is not a good thing. Instead of shooting it again and again, I decided to aim the cannon at the ground and shoot it so that I could use the momentum of the cannon to increase our distance. It might not help much but at least, this will allow us to increase our distance temporarily.
As I thought that I could have escaped this matter, another tremor that was separate from the tremors created by the one chasing me shook the ground and I felt that as well.
"Another monster is here as well!" Cath Palug growled as the situation is not looking good.
Before I could even do another thing, a monster with long legs jumped out of nowhere, destroying the road that I was just in and sending the trike and us in the air.
"F*CK!" I didn’t hesitate to open my wings and fly to scoop up Cath Palug. As much as this guy is something I want to get rid of immediately, I don’t want this guy to be left here.
Using my wings, I flew to the Trike that was tossed far from the distance and used this chance to escape. As I grab the handlebar of the trike, the two monsters that were attacking earlier are now fighting each other. Taking advantage of the chaos, I revved the engine of the Trike and pulled out one scroll in my inventory quickly before tearing it by biting on one side and my free hand tearing it in two. The scroll I pulled out is [Domain of Absolute Defense].
It is a skill that allows someone to withstand several attacks in the surrounding area for a limited amount of time. As soon as the effect appeared, we crashed toward the rocks and junks as we passed through and crashed toward the road as we fled from the monsters fighting over us. It was a few more rocks that crashed on us before the barrier disappeared and with no time to cast another, we braced for the impact.
BANG!
The Trike landed back on the road, still at full speed. I don’t know if the Trike was damaged in any way, shape, or form after landing violently like that but it doesn’t matter, as long as Cath Palug and I escape from there.
Since the two monsters continued to fight and juggle each other, we didn’t hesitate to increase our speed and leave the two monsters in their battles. I didn’t look back and just continued to look on the road with sheer focus. I can feel the battle of the two monsters from far away and even though I don’t know what is happening there anymore, I don’t care.
...
...
...
I think it should be an hour since we left the two monsters’ battle. I can still feel the tremors but it’s faint now which means we successfully escaped the monsters and evaded their pursuit. Thanks to the intervention of the big monster guy, we managed to escape.
Looking at the horizon, it seems that my destination is drawing to a close now. I just hoped that no more monsters will appear to interrupt my traveling speed.
