Chapter 81: Made for each other(2)
‘Dog?’
That was the first thing he thought, seeing the monster, which looked like a dog, just more muscular, and much bigger than a usual dog, almost twice the size of an average one.
The dog-like monster—that slammed onto the road—was hurled a few meters away.
‘Analyse…’
A faint translucent screen appeared before him.

Lucian studied it for a moment.
“Mutated Canine, huh?” he muttered in a low voice.
His gaze moved across the monster’s body again.
It had stood up, its head slightly lowered as it growled loudly, making a rough, disgusting sound.
Saliva dripped from its mouth as its bloodshot eyes stared at him with a feral hunger.
Behind him, both the man and the woman behind him trembled violently, hearing the low growl tearing through its throat.
Kyle’s breathing grew louder.
Suddenly, the dog lunged at Lucian again.
“Hiiiikk!!”
Kyle jerked backward violently, instinctively grabbing Mia again, pulling her before him, who was still frozen in shock.
“P-please do-don’t eat m-me! I don’t wa–want… die!!” He screamed again, his voice trembling as he begged for it to spare his life.
Lucian’s eyes twitched slightly beneath his hood. He was getting irritated by the man’s constant, annoying cries.
But he ignored him, tightening his grip on the handle of the knife—the one he had brought earlier from his house. It was the same one Lia and Seraphina had used to awaken.
The dog lunged at him, its body surging at him explosively, as it opened its mouth wide.
Lucian didn’t flinch.
The moment it got closer, he sidestepped, and before it could turn—
His left arm shot forward. He stabbed the knife into its neck, into the bulging muscle of its throat.
The blade sank in with a wet sound as it tore through its flesh.
The dog let out a sharp, pained whimper.
Its body trembled violently as the sudden pain shot through its neck.
Its limbs stumbled as it instinctively backed away.
Lucian looked at it for a second, but it didn’t die immediately.
Its body was trembling, and its breathing was heavy, but it was still alive.
“Oh?”
Lucian raised an eyebrow slightly beneath his hood.
A flicker of curiosity, as well as excitement, passed through his eyes.
Then
He began running at it himself.
Behind him, Kyle, with wide, horrified eyes, looked at the crazy bastard, who was trying to fight the monster.
He didn’t feel happy or hopeful.
Rather, he was getting even more panicked.
“Oh shit! We are about to die! I’m going to die!”
His voice rose again, louder this time, filled with raw, unfiltered fear.
His shout brought clarity to Mia’s eyes.
She finally snapped back at him, as her head turned sharply.
Her expression twisted in restrained anger and a bit of bitterness.
“It’s all your fault!” she shouted, her voice reverberating slightly through the empty street, making Kyle flinch.
“You just threw me away!” Her voice trembled as she held his collar tightly.
“To die by that monster!”
Kyle froze. His mind blanked out suddenly.
He had completely forgotten what he had done.
‘Shit,’
The thought hit him hard, bringing along with it emotions like guilt, but most of all… necessity.
“I–I wasn’t… It wasn’t li—” he stammered, as he tried to make an excuse, but his words stumbled over each other.
It only made her angrier.
Lucian’s lips twitched as he heard them arguing behind him so loudly.
Dodging the attack as the big dog was about to bite his arm, Lucian sidestepped, twisted his upper body… and punched it with the other hand.
His fist slammed into the side of the canine’s head with a dull, yet heavy impact.
It flew off again, before regaining its balance as soon as it landed on the ground.
Despite its trembling legs that were shaking violently, it rushed at him.
Its eyes hadn’t lost their aggression… no, rather it was getting even more aggressive, as it ran at him like a rabid dog.
Lucian’s eyes sharpened slightly before he, too, rushed at it again.
Just as it bit him, with its open, wide jaw, Lucian sidestepped and stabbed the knife again, near the same spot he had stabbed earlier.
He twisted the knife into the dog’s neck again.
The creature let out a strained, broken whimper.
Its body convulsed violently.
Its limbs flailed erratically.
It thrashed wildly.
Lucian removed the knife and jumped as its jaw lunged at him.
He turned to its blind spot and stabbed its neck again.
Its trembling lessened.
Lucian took a few steps away.
The creature stood there for a moment, its legs shaking uncontrollably.
Then—𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
It collapsed.
Its body dropped to the ground, dead.
Silence fell onto the road.
Both Kyle and Mia, feeling it was so quiet, suddenly looked in his direction.
Their eyes widened in horror.
Because of the night, they couldn’t see clearly, only the silhouette of the dog, which was lying down on the road, motionless.
It was silent.
Step.
Hearing the faint footsteps, they slowly looked up.
At the dark silhouette of a man, who was calmly walking towards them, his steps were unhurried.
Both of them flinched as he closed up to them, instinctively stepping closer to each other.
Lucian looked at both of them, who were almost hugging, or rather clutching each other, without noticing it themselves, in fear of… him.
“What are you doing outside?” he asked calmly.
His words made both of them flinch.
“W–wait… you’re a human?” Kyle asked slightly, his voice trembling as he stammered over his words.
Lucian tilted his head slightly.
“It seems so,” he answered simply, almost indifferent.
The tension in Kyle’s body loosened slightly, as both of them slightly relaxed.
Mia also exhaled faintly.
“We thought you… you were… a monster too.” Mia hesitantly said, but then—
Her gaze shifted down, dropping to the knife in Lucian’s hand, noticing the dark liquid—blood dripping from it in thick droplets.
Her eyes widened.
She instantly stepped back, holding onto Kyle’s arm tightly.
“You… you k-k-killed it?!”
Her voice shook.
Kyle’s eyes widened at her question, as he once again looked at the silent, unmoving body of the creature, before following her gaze.
His eyes landed on the knife in Lucian’s hand, too.
His face instantly drained of colour, going pale.
“Hiik!”
He jerked back.
Both of their bodies tensed once again.
In fear.
But this time—
Not of the monster.
Of him.
Lucian didn’t react much.
“What are you doing outside?” he asked again, his tone slightly louder, firmer, unfazed by their trembling.
“Don’t you know that there are monsters roaming outside?”
He tilted his head, curious.
There were very few people who willingly stepped outside in such a situation.
Kyle swallowed hard.
His throat felt dry, and the words stuck inside his mouth.
Finally, after a few seconds, he mustered his resolve and answered, forcing himself to speak, not wanting to make Lucian wait. He didn’t know if he would be killed by Lucian because of his lack of answers.
“W–We were just outside because…”
Lucian’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“Because?”
He took a step forward, making both of them flinch again.
Kyle’s breath hitched.
“We–we thought that we might be able to escape… and we ha–hadn’t heard any sound fo–for a while, so…” he said quickly.
His words trailed off.
He stopped, reaching till there.
“Please don’t kill us,” he blurted out suddenly.
“You can even keep all ou–our money. You can take any–anything from us.”
Lucian stared at him for a moment… before letting out a silent sigh.
The reason was somewhat reasonable.
In their position—
Desperation would drive anyone to make decisions like that.
But still…
“Stupid,” he muttered under his breath, making Kyle tense again.
