Chapter 80: Made for each other(1)

At night, no one was outside… and if anyone was, then Lucian hadn’t noticed it yet.

The sky above was pitch black, and clouds hovered overhead. Along with the absence of the moon, this made the environment even darker than a usual night.

There wasn’t a single vehicle roaming the streets, nor was there a person to be seen. It wouldn’t have been unusual since it was past 01:00 AM, but it felt even more eerie than usual, as if everyone was afraid of stepping out of their houses… which was actually the case.

Even in such darkness, with almost no streetlights lit up, Lucian could clearly see through it, as if the darkness were meaningless to him.

He scanned his surroundings.

There were a couple more corpses scattered across the road, each one disfigured, with one of their limbs chewed out, or their intestines visible.

The metallic smell of it lingered in the air.

But—

As Lucian said before, he didn’t care about the other corpses.

He turned to the side, without lingering on their faces or over their wounds, hearing faint sounds of screams.

Lucian removed a black mask from his pocket, wearing it to cover his lower face, and pulled his hood forward slightly, layering his face slightly by the shadow cast over his eyes.

‘Let’s go.’

He flexed his legs before dashing in that direction.

Cold air brushed past him as he ran.

While running, he could see the things the monsters had done during the daytime.

Some doors were broken in the houses, some had shattered windows, and many cars were left abandoned in the middle of the road.

Dark streaks of blood marked the sidewalks in some areas.

He moved his gaze away, noticing that some of the lights were still on in some houses, making his eyes linger slightly more over them.

But most houses were completely dark.

They could’ve switched off the lights because they were afraid of attracting the monsters… which was the right choice, or it could be that the citizens within the house were already dead.

‘They could even be asleep, thought that is unlikely.’

He thought, not slowing down.

“—away from me!”

Hearing the faint scream, Lucian’s head instantly turned toward the direction of the voice.

After a thought, he changed his path, running in the direction of the noise, pushing his feet harder.

“Grlll…!”

“No… No…! Get away from me. I’m not even tasty!”

Lucian looked at the man, who was screaming, holding a wooden bat in his trembling hands, pointing it towards the creature standing several meters in front of him.

His legs were shaking, his breathing was uneven and ragged.

Behind him stood a woman, who had her hands curled tightly, clutching onto his sleeve with a fearful expression.

Her face was pale, and her eyes were wide in fear.

Lucian’s gaze slowly moved past them.

He turned his attention to the creature the man was crying at.

Because of his [Night Vision], he could clearly see the monster despite the darkness.

But he could only see its back.

It was a beast-like creature, standing on four limbs, its body slightly large and bulging with muscles, with veins crawling across its back like twisted roots.

Its short, stiff tail flicked slowly behind it.

Its head lowered slightly as it stared at the humans before it.

“Grrrllll.” The creature took a step forward, as a low growl vibrated through its chest, making the man flinch violently.

“Ah!!” He stepped backward instinctively.

For a moment, it looked like he was trying to protect the woman behind him.

But then—

The man suddenly stepped to the side and brought the woman who was hiding behind him forward.

Lucian’s eyes sharpened slightly at the man’s actions.

“Please don’t eat me!” the man cried desperately, his voice shaking uncontrollably.

“You can eat my wife if you want!”

His hands pushed the woman slightly forward, holding her shoulders firmly as he held her between himself and the monster.

The woman’s eyes widened in horror.

Her head snapped back as she stared at him with disbelief.

“K-Kyle, what are you doing!!” the woman screamed, her voice cracking with fear.

She tried to get out of his hold, to pull away from him, but the man—Kyle gripped her tightly.

His face was pale, and sweat was dripping down his forehead.

“I don’t want to die,” he shouted desperately.

Then, he shoved her forward. The woman stumbled helplessly.

The monster growled loudly as its eyes locked onto her, before it started walking towards her.

Kyle stepped back slowly.

Meanwhile, the woman froze.

Her entire body trembled violently as the creature approached.

The dull thuds of its steps against the road echoed loudly in her ears, along with the deafening sound of her heart beating violently.

Each step it took felt like a countdown to her death.

Her breathing became shallow. Her hands, holding onto the ground below, shook violently.

Then—

The creature suddenly lunged.

“Ahhhh!!!” She shut her eyes tightly, along with Kyle, who did the same.

His lips moved silently as he prayed that the monster would focus on her and forget about him.

But then—

Baam!

Both of them flinched violently at the sudden sound.

They abruptly opened their eyes.

The woman—Mia—had her eyes widened as she stared forward in shock.

Lucian, who was seeing everything happening before him, hadn’t moved yet, but seeing that the creature was about to kill her, he increased his speed.

He appeared before the monster that had its jaw open over the woman.

Before its jaws could close, Lucian twisted his body, shifting his weight.

He flexed one of his legs, before—

Kicking the creature’s neck.

The force of the kick exploded through the monster’s body.

Its head snapped sideways as its entire body was hurled through the air.

A hoarse howl tore from its throat.

Lucian lowered his leg calmly.

He didn’t even look at the surprised couple behind him.

His eyes remained fixed on the creature carefully.

‘Dog?’
