Omega's Rebirth - Chapter 341: Run ()
The young man seemed to be nothing more than twenty summers by human age, he was only slightly than Neveah’s own age.
Neveah could not pick up any supernatural traces on him.
His scent, appearance and everything else seemed so ordinary... just human and Neveah would have concluded he was, but then there was his eyes...
That piercing gaze fixed on Neveah seemed to stare right into her soul and the young man’s eyes were a strange shade of yellow that seemed somewhat animalistic and positively eerie.
The way he stared at Neveah was so intense, it had been about a minute and Neveah was certain he had not blinked once, it gave this feeling of a predator and prey.
Neveah being the unfortunate prey, even when it appeared like she was the only non human between them both.
The young man also did not say a word like any normal human would, which was another unsettling fact.
Neveah frowned slightly, a deep feeling of unease churning in the pit of her stomach.
Within Neveah’s mind, her wolf was also restless, their instincts would not relent and Neveah knew something was off about this man.
As much as Neveah knew this, he was the only living being she could sense anywhere close by and perhaps the only way she could find out exactly where she was.
Neveah regarded the young man again, he was no dragon, which was a great relief.
As long as he was no dragon, Neveah could not picture another specie she would be so greatly disadvantaged with.
So Neveah was confident that if it came to it, she could take on this young man.
With this thought in mind, Neveah steadied her heart.
"Uhmm... hello?" Neveah called uncertainly when the young man still did not speak after a moment.
There was no response to Neveah’s words, instead, the young man just remained standing and staring.
Even this long, his gaze had not moved away from Neveah for even a moment.
"Pardon my intrusive question...are you from around here?" Neveah tried again, taking a step forward.
’Careful, Veah.’ Neveah’s wolf cautioned Neveah’s movement.
Neveah’s frown deepened when the young man still remained silent and he did not seem to have any plans to speak.
"Very well then, I shall leave you to your devices." Neveah concluded as she stepped back.
Again, Neveah froze in her step when the young man also took a step forward.
Neveah raised a brow as she watched the young man warily, her brows furrowing when she took notice of the ever so slight twitching of his head.
His head twitched at intervals, as though he did not quite know how to keep it in place which was surely not something Neveah would expect from a human.
It had begun the moment he took that step forward and now it appeared to Neveah like the young man was fighting something...or undergoing something.
Whatever it was, Neveah’s retreat had triggered it and Neveah was surely not waiting around to find out.
Just as Neveah made to turn around, the young man moved in a flash.
His movement was fast, but not fast enough that Neveah could miss it. Whatever he was, his speed fell short of that of a werewolf.
Just as he arrived close to Neveah, Neveah spun away from his outstretched hand, a ferocious snarl ripping out of her throat.
On instinct, Neveah’s claws extended and she landed a strike in her swift movement...not a lethal strike but just enough to draw first blood.
Neveah felt the thick wet liquid dripping down her claws, but what should have been warm blood was instead a chilling cold blackish goo.
"Stay away..." Neveah warned, baring her teeth at the young man who glanced over at his injured hand before he dropped it to his side.
And then his gaze moved to Neveah again, head still twitching.
Neveah’s eyes widened in horror when she caught sight of his eyes.
A moment ago, they had been those animalistic yellow orbs that were terrifying enough, but they had now converted to swirling pools of pitch darkness.
A dark mist also emanated from him, slow, it swirled about him.
Neveah could swear, she could see his skin changing tone, blackish veins surfaced and rapidly spread, especially prominent on his face.
"Creator’s fur! What in the name of anything are you?!" Neveah exclaimed in horror.
And then as though her mind could finally process things properly, all the knowledge from the books Neveah had studied in Mor’rud’s library these past days came rushing back to Neveah’s mind.
"Black veins... black blood... this stench! Scales!" Neveah exclaimed aloud as she realised what exactly was before her.
It was only a hundred sizes too small and with the likeness of a human and not the monster made from melding together the flesh of the dead.
But whatever could take on the likeness of human could surely revert to its original form, wouldn’t a werewolf know enough about transformation?
Neveah picked up the sound of shifting bones, a reformation process she was already well accustomed to and Neveah understood clearly that a shift was taking place right before her eyes.
In a moment, before her eyes would be a beast that she stood no chance against, if what was written and drawn out in those books were anything to go on.
Had this been a time where there was nothing at stake, Neveah would have taken a shot regardless and damned the consequences.
But Neveah had someone else to consider now, her life was no longer just hers to risk as she pleased.
"Veah! Run!" Neveah’s wolf yelled at her, her wolf’s words jolted Neveah into action.
Neveah dashed away, leaping into the air, her shift came over quickly and in the next moment, she was darting through the woods as fast as her paws could carry her.
Far behind Neveah, she felt the earth tremble and the loud crashing of trees crumbling, soon followed by an ear piercing shriek that shook the very forest.
But looking back was the one thing Neveah would not do, and so she just kept on running.
