Chapter 320: Much To Learn (Ch.320)

Neveah turned over on her bed, staring up at the ceiling. It had been over half a day since she had been allowed to return to her quarters to recover by Master Maloway.

Though Neveah was not certain what exactly the grumpy old man wanted her to recover from, she had already heard from Menarx that his flame would not settle for a while yet.

It would be a slow and often excruciating process, especially since they were not true mates.

Hence there was nothing to recover from since the result of the trial and the merging would keep afflicting Neveah for heaven knew how much longer.

All the while, Neveah lay in bed hoping to find sleep as it was all she could do now that she was left behind in this strange academy.

But for the past few hours, sleep eluded Neveah and she could only stare up blankly at her ceiling, she had become quite familiar with the appearance of it in this time.

Against her will of course and it was because Neveah would rather invest her time in things she considered more productive than recovering.

’You are only displeased because the riders have been summoned to fly out to battle with their dragon lords and you were asked to recover instead.’

’We have only been rider to Menarx for a few days, you do not expect we would be summoned to battle alongside him. Menarx himself would not allow it.’ Neveah’s wolf pointed out the obvious.

Neveah grumbled beneath her breath, she did admit that was a part of her displeasure but at the same time, she understood the reasons.

Neveah turned over again before she breathed out an audible sigh of exasperation.

Sitting up on her bed, she glanced over to her dinner that lay untouched and forgotten on the table, right where the attendant who had brought it to her had left it.

It would certainly have gone cold, not that it mattered since Neveah did not feel all that hungry.

Or rather, she did not feel at ease enough to eat at this time. So much had happened in the span of a few days, it would take time till Neveah felt like herself again.l

’The academy has been cleared out, the riders of the fourth squadron have all been summon to battle. Lords Imagor and Kirgan are leading the fifth, sixth and seventh squadrons to secure the keep and the districts of keep skies.’

’Duties were assigned to the rest of the squadrons, the riders have all returned to their dragon lords.’

’There will not be so many people about the academy grounds, I want out.’ Neveah’s wolf thought to her.

’The elders are a still present and the newly bonded riders too. I do not believe Master Maloway would appreciate another encounter... try not to get in his path.’ Neveah gave in without much hesitation.

Neveah got off her bed and pulled on a coat over her night dress, heading out of her quarters.

It was quite late into the night, the hallways were dark and there was hardly any lighting to guide the path, but Neveah could still see well enough and so she walked down the hall at a relaxed pace.

With over half the population of dragon riders in the academy away to see to their duties, the academy was left in much welcome silence.

Other than the patrolling dragon guards, there was hardly any other sound of movement.

Neveah did not loathe the silence of her surrounding, but she dearly wished her mind knew the same silence and did not conjure up thoughts of red scales...or black scales.

Neveah immediately shut down the thought before it crept up any further as she had been for the past hours,

Diverting her thoughts to keep track of the sounds beyond the residence tower,

She hoped to avoid running into the dragon guards as much as was possible, she had not gotten around to studying the pattern of guard patrol in the riders academy, but tonight was as good a night as any.

Getting out into open ground, Neveah studied the guard posts on the towers that were all well guarded as was expected. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

"What do you think?" Neveah asked her wolf.

"We have caused enough alarm the last time, give it an hour or two and see if the patrol eases up." Neveah’s wolf decided.

"It would not make any sense to head back in now... what could a few hours be good for?" Neveah pondered aloud as she continued on aimlessly.

A thought came to Neveah’s mind in response to her musings.

’If you intend to be a rider on the King’s guard, you must be an asset. Menarx’s love is not enough to keep you...’

These were the last words said to Neveah by the dragon king before his departure and Neveah was not certain why she recalled them at this moment.

It was like her mind brought up a scenario that could remind her better than anything else that she still had a lot to learn...a lot to prove to earn her place in dragon keep.

"I never said I would not earn my keep...he makes it a point of duty to see the worst in me." Neveah grumbled beneath her breath.

’He is king, it comes with the status.’ Neveah’s wolf offered some comfort.

"He will have to acknowledge me someday, I will make certain he does." Neveah said with determination.

"For Menarx?" Neveah’s wolf asked a rather odd question.

"Of course...what else?" Neveah asked back.

"I thought we never cared much for his acknowledgement." Neveah’s wolf reminded.

"He is king." Was all Neveah said in response as she changed her direction, heading for the first tower.

"Where are we going to now?" Neveah’s wolf asked uncertainly.

"Elina said the academy library would be at the first tower, I should go there."

"He wanted me to fetch information...on troll golems. Might have been a trick but perhaps the knowledge would do me some good." Neveah decided.
