Chapter 245: Tolling Bells 2 (Ch.245)

"Word has it...Lord Menarx...on his return flight to the keep...he was shot out of the sky!" Davina revealed with a sob.

"Shot out of the sky..." Neveah repeated slowly, unable to comprehend what she had just heard.

Why would Menarx be shot out of the sky? By who? For what purpose?

"Veah... take a breath first..." Davina began to calm Neveah, wary of Neveah’s reaction.

As the words settled, Neveah’s eyes widened in horror and she scrambled off her bed, putting her weight on her feet before she was fully prepared.

Neveah’s surrounding spun and she lost her balance, catching herself at the last moment with a hand on the headrest.

"Veah, you are in no condition..." Davina began again but Neveah was not at all interested in whatever Davina had to say.

Neveah shook her head quickly, her vision finally becoming stable and she grabbed a robe, pulling it over her nightdress before she dashed out of her room.

The moment Neveah was beyond her door, the loud tolling of the bells resonated loudly, so loud Neveah’s sensitive ears rang.

"Veah please! You do not even know where to find him!" Davina called after Neveah.

Neveah placed a hand on the wall for support as she hurried to the ascending room on unsteady footing.

"The highest level...he would be taken to the highest level..." Neveah murmured to herself as she pulled on the lever, bringing the ascending room to a stop.

The doors to the ascending room opened to reveal two vaguely familiar noble ladies within.

"What the..." One of the noble ladies began to protest as Neveah stumbled in.

"Get off!" Neveah hissed knowing they were headed to a lower level and she urgently needed the ascending room to go up.

Neveah paid them no attention as the noble ladies scurried out of the ascending room, letting the doors close.

As the ascending room began moving, Neveah clenched and unclenched her fists in anxiety.

The bells still tolled loudly, one or two tolls was bad enough but they just kept on tolling and that haunting sound rang through Neveah’s mind.

’Menarx...he has to be fine. He has to be fine...’ Neveah muttered to herself, the words repeating in her mind like a rehearsed mantra. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

As terror churned within Neveah’s heart, numerous thoughts ran through her mind.

What was this to be? Was it repercussion for last night? For betraying her promise to him in a heartbeat?

Or was it her judgement for daring to defy her fate? Would Menarx be harmed because she had chosen him? Could the Creator truly be so cruel?

Neveah’s head pounded viciously but she could not care in the slightest, the dark thoughts clouding her mind only fed her terror and anxiety.

The ascending room was moving too slowly, Neveah could not tell if it had always been this slow or it was just all in her head.

But her fists clenched tightly to restrain herself as the ascending room moved at a steady pace.

It took a short few seconds but these seconds felt to Neveah like a lifetime and when the ascending room finally arrived the highest level, Neveah hurried out of it.

Just as she did, a figure dashed past Neveah, from the robes he donned, she recognized Lord Kirgan immediately.

For a moment, their eyes met and what Neveah saw in those orbs was a terror that matched what she felt.

It was only a moment, because Kirgan was gone by the next, dashing towards the landing platform.

Neveah barely caught his silhouette yet she knew exactly what direction he headed and so did she.

It did not take too long to arrive the landing platform where a somber mood settled over the dragon lords who were already present.

"Veah!" Lord Everon hurried to Neveah, grasping her hand just as she staggered slightly.

"Where is he?... Where is he?!" Neveah demanded in a hoarse tone.

"You do not look so well, you should not be out here Veah. We will take care of it, return to your quarters." Lord Everon reasoned, avoiding Neveah’s question.

"Like hell I will!" Neveah snapped, pulling her hand away from Lord Everon and making her way forward.

Neveah’s eyes searched the platform quickly, there were about a dozen dragon guards but Menarx was nowhere to be found,

Neveah only realized she was searching the wrong place when King Jian moved.

Neveah had not even noticed King Jian standing by the platform, she only noticed him when his voice shook the very ledge upon which they stood.

"Narx!!" King Jian roared as he dashed for the edge of the platform and threw himself off, his voice faded off to give way for an earthshaking roar and the despair in his tone shook Neveah right to the core.

In a flash, the massive golden scaled dragon was shooting up into the sky, soaring towards a figure he had sighted first.

Lords Kirgan, Imagor and Cassian were not far behind, taking their dragon form, they shot after King Jian.

Neveah watched with growing apprehension as the four dragons spread out at a certain point just as the familiar silhouette of a red scaled dragon became visible, his flight slow and weak.

On either side of him was a dragon lord of the dragon guard aiding his flight.

The dragon guards moved away, to be replaced by King Jian and the King’s guard who barricaded Menarx on all sides and guided his flight so he would not fall.

They were at such a great distance that Neveah could hardly see anything other than the color of their scales.

But as they got closer and grew more visible, the very first thing to enter Neveah’s sight was the long, gleaming spear that portruded from Menarx’s upper arm, the blade having pierced through completely.

"Narx! Gods! Narx!" Neveah exclaimed, hurrying forwards but she was stopped by Lord Everon who grasped her arm.

"Veah, Menarx’s condition is critical! I must see to him as soon as they land! But you cannot be here for what is to come, it will be difficult to watch." Lord Everon insisted urgently as he turned to a dragon lord.

"Escort Lady Neveah back to her quarters." Lord Everon instructed.
