Omega's Rebirth - Chapter 243: An Ill Feeling ()
Thump...thump... thump...
Neveah could hear the sound of her own heartbeats as she arrived the fourth level, hurrying down the hall to her quarters.
It was only when Neveah arrived within the safety of her room that she dared release the breath she had been holding, her hand shooting up to her chest.
Neveah had never known her heart could beat so fast and a groan of frustration escaped her as she leaned against her door, breathing in a rhythmical pattern to calm herself.
It took a moment for Neveah’s heart to return to normal, but that only gave way for the pulsing of the mate bond within her.
Neveah hissed, sliding down to the floor as she brought her knees close to her chest and wrapped her arms around them.
For someone who had not known many emotions in her lifetime, Neveah found all that had happened was a little too overwhelming.
It was only now the thought of Menarx returned to Neveah’s mind and a bitter feeling of guilt blossomed within her.
Neveah did not know why she kissed Xenon even knowing she should not, why all her reservations had flitted away in that moment.
What was even more difficult to admit was the fact that she loved every moment of it...
This thought sent the aching pulse of the mate bond growing more severe, as though warning her and reminding her that she could not change her own fate.
"What exactly am I doing?" Neveah questioned herself in a shaky tone, burying her head in her knees.
Somehow... sitting right there, her heart consumed in confusion and the terrible ache of the mate bond tormenting her, Neveah drifted off to sleep.
_______________
The rays of the sunlight from her partly opened window was what awakened Neveah the following morning.
It was already a little past dawn and the sun rose slowly from beyond the horizon, to take it’s place, casting all beneath it in it’s brilliant rays.
It was a certain thing that the entire Keep was already up and running by this time, yet Neveah’s own day had just began and she hardly felt like she had even closed her eyes.
Neveah’s eyes fluttered open, she glanced around herself for a moment, pondering over her strange position by the door when she had a perfectly good bed.
That wad before the memories from the previous night came rushing back to her.
Neveah groaned quietly, leaning her head back against the door and straightening her legs out to ease the cramp.
Her legs had gone numb for spending so long in such a position and Neveah mentally reprimanded herself for not finding her way to her bed at the least.
Neveah rose to her feet after a moment but staggered backwards slightly as her head spun and she reached out a hand to the door to steady herself.
Neveah shook her head in an attempt to clear her vision, but it was to no avail.
Her muscles felt weak and heavy, there was a pulsing ache in her head and a nauseous feeling churning in her stomach.
Neveah had never felt this way before, at least not since arriving dragon keep.
And the only times Neveah had ever felt this sort of way were those occasions when she had consumed some poison of some sort courtesy of Alpha Queen Vilma.
’You are worn out, Veah. Mentally and physically so, it is telling on you. You forget that a part of you is still human and there will be times when your body cannot handle the strain."
’You need to rest. Would you still head to the rider’s academy?’ Neveah’s wolf thought to her.
’Menarx promised to come fetch me, I should be ready in time for his arrival...it will be my first day, would it not be inappropriate to take a sick leave?’ Neveah thought back to her wolf.
’Get a few minutes of rest at the least. You must let your mind settle if we are to get through the day.’ Neveah’s wolf advised worriedly.
Neveah sighed quietly, making her way to her bed slowly, she sat down and cradled her head in her hands, unconsciously registering her burning temperature.
Had Neveah been a human, she would have concluded she had come down with a fever of some sorts.
’Isn’t it ironic? Of all the times I have shared a kiss, these three recent experiences are one trouble after the next.’
’Alessio kissed me and I got carted away to Dragon Keep. Menarx kissed me and I literally lost consciousness...now Xenon and I feel like I was rolled over by a boulder.’ Neveah thought to her wolf.
Neveah’s mind was hazy, just as her vision still was and Neveah felt as though she would black out at any moment. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
’This is not the time to make jokes, Veah. The pain you feel will only get worse and I cannot relieve you of it." Neveah’s wolf thought to her.
"I couldn’t be ill, could I? Werewolves don’t get ill..." Neveah murmured quietly, uncertain why she was feeling the way she did.
"It’s the mate bond, Veah. It senses your desire for another and it will not react kindly.’ Neveah’s wolf explained to her.
"I’ve never heard of the mate bond being such a nuisance. I have suppressed it just fine these past few months and there has not been any trouble." Neveah said in bafflement.
’I do not understand it either, but I know what we feel is surely an effect of the mate bond.’ Neveah’s wolf replied with equal confusion.
Neveah groaned in annoyance, she could not believe the mate bond would still be hanging over her even after so long.
It felt as though she could never be rid of Alessio’s shadow...it was troubling.
"How shall it react if I had gone beyond a kiss?..." Neveah grumbled as she laid back on her bed, resting her hand over her eyes.
The brightness of the sun rays only worsened the ache in Neveah’s head and she could not get to the window to pull the drapes closed in her condition, hence she could only shield her eyes.
"Do you truly want to find out?" Neveah’s wolf asked her.
"I should have ensured to reject him... severe this hateful bond once and for all. Must I live with this?" Neveah grumbled in an exhausted tone.
"All the more reason you must bond with another. One we can trust." Neveah’s wolf reminded.
"A bond I can trust...it is the only thing that will keep you from going rogue and severe the mate bond. I know that." Neveah murmured with a sigh.
"And who can give us this...a bond we can trust?" Neveah’s wolf asked her.
"How should I know?" Neveah asked, her head still ached terribly and it left her feeling sick.
"A flame that burns too hot burns out quickest...a desire too overwhelming is the surest way to an end. What we need is calm and stability." Neveah’s wolf reminded.
"What we need...is Menarx." Neveah murmured, understanding her wolf’s implications.
Xenon was the flame that burned too hot... the desire that was too overwhelming to be safe.
"You know it just as well as I do, Xenon is a risk we cannot afford to take...we are broken ourself, how can we fix another?" Neveah’s wolf quizzed.
"I know okay... I do not think you have to spell it out anymore." Neveah grumbled, rubbing her aching temple.
Neveah knew her wolf had their best interest in mind, and at the same time, Neveah felt aggrieved that her wolf seemed to be pushing off all the blame of what had happened with Xenon.
Neveah knew for certain that if her wolf had done something... anything other than retreat to the back of their mind in calm silence, then perhaps Neveah would not have been so reckless.
Well at least Neveah wanted to believe that... that she was not so invested in Xenon that she would ignore her wolf’s caution.
"We share a mind Veah...a heart. I care for the Black Scaled dragon just as you do. Yet I know hoping to have things our way is asking for too much." Neveah’s wolf told her.
"And far be it from us that we dare want more than our fate allows? Right?" Neveah asked with a mirthless chuckle.
"Far be it from us that we hurt a soul as precious as Menarx’s in pursuit of fleeting desires." Neveah’s wolf corrected.
Neveah heaved a quiet sigh, her mind was in a mess and she could feel perspiration beading on her forehead.
Every inch of her body ached terribly and her head pounded viciously.
The mate bond was merciless in it’s back lash, and Neveah could not predict when it would relent in it’s torture.
"I know... I know." Neveah replied to her wolf tiredly.
Pain was just that... pain. Neveah felt if fate truly believed it could control her choices with the mate bond, then it was sorely mistaken.
Neveah had known enough pain in her lifetime, no matter how severe or excruciating... Neveah would make her own choices again and again and fate be damned.
