Omega's Rebirth - Chapter 234: After Tonight ()
A low growl sounded from the black dragon at Neveah’s words, his lips bared, flashing his deadly dentition in clearer light.
Neveah shivered visibly, Xenon’s heavy breathing and narrowed eyes were prove enough that the black scaled dragon was agitated.
Perhaps a casual greeting was not the best way to begin this conversation.
"Greetings, My Lord." Neveah’s countenance changed instantly, reverting back to propriety.
She lowered her head slightly into a bow of respect, just enough that it showed she was bowing but not so much that she would be in contact with Xenon.
"I came meaning to speak with you." Neveah began, glancing back up at Xenon who quietly watched her with narrowed eyes.
"Although, I must admit this does not seem like a choice time...to speak." Neveah continued.
"However, there are words I must say to you on this night, My Lord. Even risking my life...for once the crack of dawn is upon us, I fear I shall no longer be at liberty to hold a conversation with you." Neveah said.
Truly, at dawn, Neveah would head to the rider’s academy. She would be taking a step that would seal her fate as Lord Menarx’s rider.
How could she be at liberty to entertain thoughts or concerns for another dragon lord?
Neveah was not one to betray the trust placed in her, since she had decided to accept Menarx and bet her life on him, Neveah would have to let go of every other thoughts or childish desires.
When dawn would come, the days as Lord Xenon’s attendant and companion would truly be over and not just to the world but in Neveah’s heart also.
This was the only way Neveah could feel less guilty to Menarx.
’If I cannot love him, at the least, I will not pine for another while at his side. He deserves more than that...more than me.’ Neveah thought to herself.
Neveah cleared her throat to shake off her thoughts, if there was anything Neveah could do better than anyone, it was playing the noble and regal princess to perfection.
"My Lord need not speak, to listen alone will be just fine. What I have come to say does not require a response... I already know it." Neveah continued.
Somehow she forgot about the terrifying, agitated beast before her as she spoke.
"Word has it you intend to cuff, I will not be foolhardy enough to believe you wish to deal yourself harm... over me..." Neveah paused slightly, sucking in a shaky breath.
"Yet if... just if that is the case, " Neveah continued, lifting her gaze to stare right back in those fiery ember orbs.
"Do you not think it unfair to me, Xenon? Do I seem so pathetic that you would compensate to me for that event by hurting your ownself?"
"Do you suppose that would make me feel better... that the first man I have cared for could look me in the eye and call me another, because it does not!" Neveah stated clearly.
Somehow, those words had come out without Neveah intending them to and Neveah’s eyes widened in horror at her own confession.
A snort that sounded suspiciously like amusement from the black scaled dragon further horrified Neveah.
"Does this seem funny to you? You have the entire keep unable to rest easy tonight with your selfish, vindictive and absurd decision and what? You dare laugh?" Neveah hissed furiously,
The black scaled dragon merely watched, just staring in silence and the fact that she could not tell what exactly Xenon was thinking only agitated Neveah more.
"It’s you in control Xenon, don’t think you can hide behind the wild haze. You understand exactly what I’m saying so I will be direct..." Neveah wished she could rage at Xenon but her anger dissipated just as quickly as it had come.
"Can you not reconsider your decision?" Neveah asked in a tone of dismay.
"If truly I have something to do with this, then I should get a say in it... and me says I do not want to see you hurt, Xenon... I just... I can’t..." Neveah murmured, her tone now barely above a whisper.
Neveah searched Xenon’s eyes and she could see nothing that told Xenon was there, all she saw was rage and that darkness that lurked right at the surface.
It was good enough that Xenon had not attacked her, it meant at the very least, he was not completely lost.
But Neveah guessed it was hoping for too much that Xenon would understand her and it was a pity if he did not.
After this moment, Neveah would never say these words again. After this moment, Neveah would completely cut off these unnecessary worries and concern and think only for her own future... for the life she could have here in Dragon Keep.
That was all Neveah would allow from now, she had known enough pain and Neveah could not afford much more,
There was only so much heartache a living being could take, even if that person was Neveah.
Neveah was already struggling, struggling to hold onto her own sanity and not be lost in the darkness of her mind.
If Xenon could not pull her to the light, then Neveah did not need him.
She was tainted and he was a greater darkness, two shadows had no place together, they would only lead each other to ruin...it was better this way.
Neveah sighed quietly, the best she could do at this point was let out her true feelings if only for this one time.
This was the last time she would allow herself feel this way.
’You are only hurting yourself more...he cannot understand you.’ Neveah’s wolf thought to Neveah
’It was worth a try, if my words could convince Xenon, then at least the brief... short moments of warmth we have shared would not have been a waste.’ Neveah thought back to her wolf.
"I have said all I have to, I should return now. I do not know if you can understand me, but perhaps it is for the better that you cannot."
"For the days up till this, I am deeply grateful, Lord Xenon of Onyx Scales."
"After tonight, your path and mine will no longer cross." Neveah murmured as she turned to take her leave but an earth shaking growl stopped Neveah in her tracks.
"W...with...whose perm...ission?!" Came that familiar lazy drawl and Neveah froze up completely.
