Omega's Rebirth - Chapter 224: Perhaps, Not Today ()
"To carry on your father’s will, I can see how much that means to you... I can also see that you have earned it. You have done right by your title and bloodline." Neveah said truthfully.
Menarx was an honorable man, fiercely loyal to his liege and he cherished his sworn brothers dearly.
He was also very straightforward and decisive, Neveah could always be certain Menarx would be honest even if his words were sometimes extreme and blunt.
Since the moment Menarx had chosen to accept Neveah, he had never gone back on it even when so many outrageous accusations were laid against Neveah.
That was precisely why Neveah found Menarx so impressive, and why she could not hold his initial scorn and disdain against him.
His was a rare and beautiful soul, to have known darkness and still be left untainted... Neveah could not say the same for her ownself.
Neveah’s words earned her the smile she hoped to see on Menarx’s face and his sad countenance eased away.
"It is all I have lived for, to be worthy of my father’s prestige. My brother bore the title and he did not fail in his duty... now, my clan’s honor rests on me."
"It is a title of great consequence, it signifies a great duty and with that duty is expected a great sacrifice."
"I hope to share this duty with you... but only when you wish to... when you truly wish to." Menarx emphasized.
"Narx..." Neveah began but Menarx shook his head slightly.
"I know you do not love me, Veah." Menarx stated directly and Neveah winced visibly but nodded.
Neveah had made no pretences of her feelings, what she felt for Menarx at this time was deep respect and trust...but Neveah did not even know exactly what love was.
She did not know how to love another and if ever there were feelings of tenderness in her heart, Neveah’s first reaction was always to be rid of it.
Neveah also knew her wolf would take no chances with love, not after what they had already been through.
As Neveah’s wolf would always say, a King had no friends. The same applied to all forms of companionship...her wolf would not have it and Neveah herself could not afford it.
Neveah had long accepted her harsh fate, there was not much else she could do...but this precious and honest feeling Menarx offered her, Neveah just could not let go of it.
Though Neveah did not know of her own heart, this was the first time in her life she was truly and utterly convinced that she was loved and cherished.
The man before Neveah’s eyes loved her, she could see it in his every action, in his every look, in his every word... she had known it for a long time too. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
If this was the only good thing the Creator would offer her, Neveah wanted to hold tightly onto it...if only for this once, she wanted to be selfish.
Was love so important? Would it not be okay to cherish and trust Menarx for as long as their fates allowed?
"Forgive me, Menarx. I can make you no certain promise, at this time... I can make no choice for myself but this." Neveah began in a guilty tone.
This was the very same reason she had turned Lucas down, but this time, Neveah could not make the selfless choice she had before.
Neveah had made this choice because it was the only way she could think of that was safe to remain in Dragon Keep... perhaps it was selfish.
But Neveah had tasted death once and she had almost met her end in those currents for the second time, she could not imagine just how much more terrors awaited her.
"This Keep... your home, it terrifies me. All around me are powers I stand no chance against, not for the first time in my life... I am the prey." Neveah paused at this point, sucking in a deep breath to calm herself.
Neveah hated feeling weak, she detested this feeling of helplessness but it was the only constant feeling she had known all her life.
"Everyone and everything is against me, from the poison at the light hall, to the molt scales, to that spell at the cliff..."
"Every turn I take ends up in a wrong path and I live with my life placed on the line." Neveah said in a heavy tone, it was difficult for her to admit to her truest thoughts but she felt she owed Menarx this much honesty.
"I am scared. By the Creator, I fear for the unknown and everyday beyond this...but I do not want to be anymore."
"I do not want to be the prey... the pawn, or the one who always has to struggle for survival. I just want to live...to truly live." Neveah breathed an exhausted sigh.
"So I cannot promise you my heart...not at this moment. You will be risking a bond with a woman who may never love you...you are the one being cheated."
"You may still have a change of heart, Menarx. You can still back out now... I understand." Neveah assured honestly.
"It is fine. I will not ask for more than you are willing to give, Veah. What I desire the most is to protect you...to keep you safe."
"So all that you wish to do...all you wish to achieve, hold your head up high and go for it. I will be your foothold, your strength, your shield and your guide." Menarx replied with a shake of his head.
"Would it truly be okay? Will you be fine?" Neveah asked doubtfully.
Menarx chuckled quietly, tilting his head to the side.
"I will love you enough for the both of us, Neveah. I will love you so dearly that you will have no choice but to love me too." Menarx replied with confidence.
"I have never failed a vow made before this pillar... Whatever I have said here, I place my life on the line to achieve."
"I will win your heart Neveah... perhaps not today, but someday. I will have you confess your love to me right here, so my father may grant us his blessings...but before then, I will have you be the most powerful woman in Dragon Keep."
"I would like to see, who is daring enough to harm you again." Menarx said in a dark tone.
