Omega's Rebirth - Chapter 200: Outrun ()
As the sun began it’s descent beyond the horizon up in the skies of Maneward, one of the most populated districts of Keep Skies,
An unexpected occurrence played out right in the town square, before a crowd of gaping onlookers.
’How dare you... raise a weapon on the child...?’ Neveah’s wolf thought, rage surging through her veins and setting them alight with the intense desire to spill blood.
A wolf was a wild and savage being, Neveah had never fully understood that until this moment when she was stuck in the back of her own mind.
Like a secondary being in her own body, unable to control her thoughts and actions because all of these were being controlled by her other half... the beast within.
Somehow, her wolf’s rage had been triggered...a rage so intense, one would think Neveah was faced with her greatest enemies.
And now, Neveah’s wolf had seized control and would not return it back to Neveah.
Neveah knew without a doubt that her wolf would kill all nine dwarves before her eyes and then hunt down the four that had slipped away.
’Listen...we don’t have to kill anyone. We have Roman now, calm yourself.’ Neveah warned her wolf, unable to understand why her wolf was unusually agitated.
Neveah had only seen her wolf this way a few times, but in those occasions, between Alessio and Neveah’s father, her wolf’s reaction was justified.
But this time, Neveah just could not comprehend why her wolf was so angered.
’Calm?...I do not want to...’ Neveah’s wolf replied to her through their link.
Neveah could hear in her wolf’s tone that she had already decided to execute all the dwarves who had kidnapped Roman and Neveah knew her wolf could not be convinced otherwise.
’I do not approve of this! I don’t!’ Neveah said clearly, attempting to dissuade her wolf.
Not because the dwarves were innocent, they had hurt an innocent child and so they did deserve to die.
But there were hundreds of eyes, hundreds of commoners in Maneward presently watched.
Neveah had already revealed her identity, she was certain news would reach Dragon Keep soon, Neveah did not see the wisdom in escalating the situation.
’There is neither you nor I Veah...we are one and the same. I want their heads...and you know well enough that you want the same.’ Neveah’s wolf reminded.
From searching for Roman who had disappeared...How had it all come to this?
But even so, Neveah could not deny her wolf’s words. It seemed her wolf took hold of Neveah’s fleeting urges and amplified it to an overwhelming desire.
Neveah’s paws dug deeper into the Earth as she stalked closer to the ring leader of the group of dwarves, one paw ahead of the other in a slow, predatory manner.
For all the others, Neveah could spare. Neveah had tried her hardest to restrain herself, that was until this dwarf tried to hurt Roman and so, he could not be spared.
Neveah was one who never forgave a harm done to those she wished to protect, perhaps because of how rare it was that there were actually people she cared about enough to be willing to protect.
Neveah’s wolf head was tilted slightly to the side, her sharp eyes narrowed fiercely and her sharp canines on full display as low growls escaped her lips.
Before Neveah’s massive build, the terrified dwarf was like a grain of sand and Neveah knew it would take nothing to smash him beneath her paws or rip him in two.
Neveah did not consider crushing the dwarf with her canines, she did not want the filthy blood of the dwarf on her tongue.
Her thoughts were clouded with the darkest methods by which she could end this dwarf and her muscles twitched in anticipation,
The rage and blood thirst that consumed Neveah was foreign even to her and she could not tell if truly it was hers or if it belonged to her wolf.
All Neveah knew was the intense battle she fought at this moment with her own mind to regain a sense of control and rationality before she harmed someone.
"That’s enough... we’ve done enough." Neveah thought to her wolf as she battled for control, barring her wolf’s bloodthirsty urges from affecting her anymore than they already did.
"We should kill him! All of them!" Neveah’s wolf hissed furiously as she still stalked the trembling dwarf whose face was as white as a sheet of paper.
"No! Stop it! Enough of this!" Neveah snapped back to her wolf.
"Just take him and go... spare us! Please spare us!" The unsightly looking dwarf pleaded desperately as he crawled away from Neveah’s massive build
Neveah sucked in a deep breath as her wolf resisted her will, an act Neveah’s wolf had never done before.
’Enough!’ Neveah snarled again, this time, she forced her wolf’s presence back to her mind and reclaimed control.
It was only then Neveah took notice of the attention she had drawn and her heart sank, not because of the terror and judgement in the eyes of these citizens,
Neveah was never one to care for the opinions of others, rather it was because Neveah did not need to sense their presence to know the dragons would be here at any moment.
Neveah turned, her gaze settling on a wide eyed Roman who clutched to his father tightly.
Neveah had never intended to shift right in the heart of Maneward, but to save Roman, she was left with no choice.
Just as she predicted, saving Roman would again cost her freedom.
"Veah..." Trevin began, taking a step closer.
Neveah did not wait to hear what he had to say, her fate with Lydia’s family would end now and she had also repaid the debt to Trevin for saving her life.
Neveah darted away from the scene, heading towards the forest in a haste...if only she was fast enough, perhaps there would be hope for her still.
But could a wolf truly outrun dragons?
