Chapter 85: Chapter 85: I Will Take Care of You for a Lifetime

"Jacob Jennings wasn’t ignoring your calls, he was waiting for you to call him. But look at you, you haven’t called him once and you’re pretending to be sick?" Jacob complained to May Morgan.

"Okay, maybe faking illness wasn’t right, but is it right for you to do things behind my back?" May thought, since things had gotten to this point, she might as well confront Jacob.

Everyone keeping secrets is making no one comfortable.

Jacob was taken aback, his righteous accusations suddenly turned awkwardly evasive under May’s questioning: "Madam, what are you talking about? I don’t understand."

"You told me you had to go back to the police station to talk with Director Lawson about something urgent, but before I boarded the plane, I called Director Lawson and asked him. He said there was nothing he needed to discuss with you, so you were obviously lying to me, and you know why you’re lying."

In reality, May hadn’t called Director Lawson to ask about Jacob, but she figured Jacob wouldn’t call him either, so she wanted to bluff him and see if he’d tell her the truth.

Jacob had returned on Vincent Vance’s orders to investigate May’s past. At that time, Vincent didn’t say he should disclose it to May, so no matter how May asked, he dared not tell the truth.

"Madam, I was under orders from the master to go to your hometown and inquire a bit, but it was all about your grandmother’s matters. Please be assured, our master is sincere towards you regardless of what he does."

"I know whether he is sincere or not, but if he really considers me his wife, he should tell me what you’re going to investigate. Otherwise, I’ll have to think he’s hiding something from me and doesn’t see me as family."

Jacob looked up at May, saw the anger on her face, sighed helplessly, and pulled out his phone to call Vincent.

"Master, the madam admitted she’s pretending to be sick." Jacob said deliberately to Vincent while watching May’s face.

Vincent must have anticipated this because those people told him May didn’t have any serious illness at the hospital, just got some medicine, so he guessed May was deliberately pretending.

"Alright, pass the phone to her, I’ll talk to her," Vincent instructed, trying to suppress his irritation.

Jacob quickly handed the phone to May. As soon as she took it, she heard Vincent’s slightly cold voice questioning her, "May, don’t be so willful. Do you know how dangerous Crestwood is? You..."

Before he could finish, May interrupted him, "Vincent, I am being willful, but you know why I’m doing it."

Vincent paused, then said softly, "I have nothing to hide from you. If you want to ask something, just say it, and I’ll definitely answer truthfully."

"What did you have Jacob investigate?" May asked Vincent, glancing intentionally at Jacob.

Vincent hesitated, then lied, "I asked him to investigate your grandmother’s case, is there a problem?"

"But he told me you sent someone to investigate my background and the jade pendant. Is this true?"

Jacob never said that, and upon hearing May say so, he immediately stood up from the sofa to explain to Vincent on the phone. However, May stood up even faster than he did and raised her voice to Vincent, "Stop investigating, I’ve told you everything. Whatever you want to know, I’ll tell you. My dad said I’m a jinx; anyone who treats me well will die horribly. Are you scared? If you are, then divorce me and stay far away, let’s not see each other again."

While saying these words, May’s emotions were noticeably agitated, and Vincent knew she was very upset, so he quickly comforted her, "May, you’re overthinking this. I’ve never resented you. I... I watched your conversation with your dad, but I’ve never thought you’d hurt me. Don’t worry, I chose you in this life, I’ll never give up. Even if I’m harmed by you in the future, I accept it."

The tears held in May’s eyes suddenly flowed out at Vincent’s words. In fact, she was half-guessing and half-bluffing earlier.

She thought of her conversation with Mason Morgan being seen by Vincent, after all, it was in the police station. Although Director Lawson gave her and Mason a private room, there must be a surveillance video, and being as meticulous as Vincent, he would definitely watch that video.

Later, when Jacob suddenly said he had to leave, she guessed it must be because Vincent watched that video and was concerned about what Mason said, so he sent Jacob to investigate her background. She thought Vincent would despise her, even considering before speaking to him if he finds her dangerous, she could stay in Crestwood and not return, keeping away from him.

Yet, his words to her were of unwavering commitment.

While wiping tears, May said to Vincent again, "Aren’t you afraid I’ll get you killed? I’m a jinx; even my own father despises me enough to want to kill me."

Vincent chuckled gently, his voice full of affection, "How could I? Mason Morgan is a scumbag; I’m not him. I said I’d take care of you for a lifetime, and it will be a lifetime, no matter what, a lifetime unless I die. Do you understand?"

"You’re terrible, don’t say such things about dying." May, feeling superstitious, quickly scolded Vincent, "I tell you, all my family is gone. If something happens to you too, who will I rely on? Who’ll be my long-term meal ticket?"

"Alright, alright, I understand. I’ll stay alive, but without you by my side, I’ll be lonely."

May blushed and awkwardly glanced at Jacob next to her, indicating, "Behave, I’m using Jacob’s phone."

Vincent laughed briefly and spoke in a lower voice, "I forgot, give the phone back to him. I’ll call your phone tonight, and we’ll have a private chat."

May coughed lightly, quickly returning Jacob’s phone to him. Once Jacob had the phone, he turned and went outside to speak a few words to Vincent.

When he came back, the blame on his face towards May had lessened noticeably, "Madam, the master said, tonight we’ll stay at a hotel first, and tomorrow morning I’ll personally escort you back."

"Well, aren’t you investigating anymore?" May looked at Jacob with embarrassment and quickly apologized, "I’m sorry for the inconvenience I’ve caused. Feel free to continue your investigation; I won’t hinder you anymore."
