Chapter 4: Chapter 4, Lin Yi, Where Did You Get That Dagger From!

After completing the registration, the crowd around the Awakening Bureau’s table gradually dispersed.

Most students had already made their decisions. Those with strong combat classes signed up immediately, eager to step outside the city and begin leveling. Others quietly walked away, deciding that a safer path inside the city suited them better.

Lin Yi and Wang Hao slowly made their way down the street toward a nearby bus stop.

The afternoon sun hung low above Jianghe City’s tall defensive walls, casting long shadows across the road.

Wang Hao still looked uneasy.

He walked beside Lin Yi with his arms folded, clearly trying to think of a way to change his friend’s mind.

Finally he spoke.

"Brother Lin... are you absolutely sure about this?"

Lin Yi glanced at him.

"About what?"

"About going outside the walls," Wang Hao said with a frown. "This isn’t a game. Even experienced hunters die out there."

Lin Yi nodded casually.

"I know."

"That’s the problem! You say you know, but you still signed up like it’s no big deal!"

Lin Yi chuckled softly.

"If I don’t try, I’ll never know what I’m capable of."

Wang Hao opened his mouth, then closed it again.

He had known Lin Yi for three years, but today his friend seemed slightly different.

Still calm.

Still relaxed.

But there was something else now.

A quiet confidence that hadn’t been there before.

Wang Hao sighed.

"Fine. If you’re really going, then I’m going too."

Lin Yi stopped walking and looked at him.

"You already registered."

"I know," Wang Hao said stubbornly. "But now I’ll stick close to you during the expedition. At least if something happens, I can help you run away faster."

Lin Yi laughed.

"Very considerate."

The two of them reached the bus stop and sat down on a bench.

For a moment the street was quiet.

Then Lin Yi slowly focused his attention inward.

The moment he did, the familiar system panel appeared in his mind.

....

[Minimal Effort Maximum Reward System]

Host: Lin Yi

Class: Laborer

Rank: E

Level: 1

.....

Beneath the panel, a small notification blinked gently.

New item acquired.

Lin Yi opened the inventory interface.

Inside the storage space floated a single weapon.

A dagger.

At first glance it looked ordinary, but the moment Lin Yi focused on it, detailed information appeared.

.....

Froststeel Hunter Dagger

Quality: Rare

Attack Power: 52

Effect: Frost Edge – each strike carries cold energy capable of slowing targets.

.....

Lin Yi stared at the description for several seconds.

Then he silently compared it to the original reward the system had mentioned earlier.

Beginner Hunter Dagger (Common).

A common beginner weapon normally had an attack value somewhere around 5 or 6.

The dagger in front of him had over fifty.

And that wasn’t even the most shocking part.

The Frost Edge effect meant the weapon carried elemental energy.

Elemental weapons were extremely valuable even among experienced hunters.

Lin Yi exhaled slowly.

The system’s amplification clearly did not mean simply multiplying items.

Instead, it can evolve them.

A cheap beginner weapon had been transformed into something far more powerful.

Wang Hao noticed Lin Yi staring into space.

"Brother Lin?"

Lin Yi snapped out of his thoughts.

"Hmm?"

"You’ve been daydreaming for like a full minute."

Lin Yi smiled.

"Just thinking about the expedition."

Wang Hao groaned.

"You’re way too calm."

Lin Yi didn’t explain.

Instead, he quietly stretched his arm and activated the system inventory.

A faint flash appeared in his palm, as the dagger materialized silently.

Its blade shimmered with a faint silver-blue sheen, like ice reflecting moonlight.

Wang Hao’s eyes widened instantly.

"Where did you get that?"

Lin Yi casually twirled the dagger once before holding it up.

"The Bureau gave everyone a beginner weapon when we registered."

"That’s not a beginner weapon!" Wang Hao nearly shouted.

Several pedestrians glanced in their direction.

Lin Yi raised an eyebrow.

"Why not?"

Wang Hao leaned closer and inspected the blade carefully.

After a few seconds his expression turned strange.

"This... looks like froststeel."

"Is that good?"

Wang Hao stared at him like he was an alien.

"Good? Froststeel weapons are usually used by mid-level hunters!"

Lin Yi blinked.

"Oh."

Wang Hao grabbed his shoulders.

"Don’t ’oh’ me! How did you get this thing?"

Lin Yi shrugged.

"Maybe the Bureau felt generous."

Wang Hao looked like he wanted to scream.

Before he could question further, a calm voice suddenly spoke nearby.

"That dagger is not a standard Bureau weapon."

Both boys turned their heads.

Su Qinghan stood a few steps away.

She had apparently approached the bus stop without them noticing.

Her gaze was fixed on the dagger in Lin Yi’s hand.

"Froststeel," she said quietly. "Rare material. Even the academy’s training equipment doesn’t include weapons like that."

Lin Yi looked at the blade again.

"You seem knowledgeable."

Su Qinghan ignored the comment.

"Where did you obtain it?"

Lin Yi answered honestly.

"Registration reward."

Su Qinghan’s brows furrowed slightly.

"That is impossible."

Wang Hao nodded vigorously.

"Exactly!"

Lin Yi laughed.

"Maybe I just got lucky."

Su Qinghan studied him for a moment.

Her instincts told her something about this situation was unusual.

But after a brief silence she simply said,

"Luck will not save you outside the walls."

Lin Yi nodded.

"True."

Su Qinghan crossed her arms.

"The beginner expedition in three days will enter Sector Twelve beyond the eastern gate."

Wang Hao blinked.

"How do you know that?"

"I asked the Bureau officer earlier," she replied calmly.

Lin Yi tilted his head slightly.

"And?"

Su Qinghan looked directly at him.

"Sector Twelve contains mostly low level monsters. But even those can kill inexperienced hunters."

Her tone remained steady.

"If you insist on joining the expedition, do not act recklessly."

Wang Hao whispered to Lin Yi,

"Brother... I think she’s worried about you."

Su Qinghan shot him a cold glance, causing Wang Hao to shiver a little.

Su Qinghan then looked at him for another second before turning away.

But just before she left, she said something unexpected.

"If you truly plan to fight monsters..."

She paused briefly.

"...do not fall behind."

Then she walked down the street and disappeared into the crowd.

Wang Hao stared after her.

"That’s the longest conversation she’s ever had with anyone."

Lin Yi twirled the froststeel dagger once more before returning it to the system inventory.

His eyes drifted toward the distant city walls.

Three days.

In three days he would step outside Jianghe City for the first time.

And with this system in his possession, he had a strong feeling that the expedition might not go the way anyone expected.
