Chapter 96: 96:Leaving.

The poison had not been difficult to obtain since he had enough money but the suppressants had proved to be a bit of a challenge though nothing he couldn’t solve.

Getting it in through the high elven borders was much easier since he still had full control there but the dark elven borders had a lot of requirements.

It required official authorisation and perfect timing. All of this was easily solved by the seal.

"How are your studies in language?" She asked.

Atheline sighed loudly.

"Stressfully. "

She chuckled.

"You should not push it."

"No, I want to be good."

This was enough to get her attention fully on him.

She narrowed her eyes.

Predictable.

"Don’t beat yourself i would rather you not learn than strain yourself."

That was enough. He leaned in to her right and tucked a stray hair behind her ear.

"You missed that."

His fingers brushed against her ear. Her gaze shifted to the mirror as predicted.

’Perfect’

His other hand moved and rested next to the documents which accidentally slid followed by the seal.

His sleeves covered them, without a sound.

"You seem distracted," he said.

"I’m thinking," she replied shortly.

’Good’

Because she was thinking, she wouldn’t notice. The seal settled against his palms, the ring still warm.

"Could you allow me a goodbye when you leave?"

Her silence confirmed it all, she wouldn’t. He might just wake up and find her missing.

"Is there anything you might want to tell me?" He asked.

She shook her head.

"That’s all."

Atheline stepped back. She didn’t look at him again but went back to preparing herself.

After that, everything had been smooth sailing as he placed everything needed where it was supposed to.

...

Atheline had measured the poison carefully to only weaken him and remove the possibility of refusal but what he had not accounted for was the severity.

Still, the important part remained intact, she would not leave him.

His breath slightly steadied as he came out of his thoughts. The poison was still there suppressed, but the effects left behind were still there.

The small bouts of pain acted as a reminder but the poison no longer had absolute control and neither did she.

This time it felt different, even freeing.

The difference was small, so small that it would go unnoticed by anyone else but to him, that was enough.

The plan had succeeded, but he knew he could do better in a way that wouldn’t cause her hurt and could achieve their goals together.

Atheline spent a few hours awake since he had been continuously sleeping.

Lilith’s breath eventually lulled him to sleep.

The next morning arrived quietly. He was woken up with the familiar rays of sunshine.

Atheline could feel that the pain in his body had basically reduced to almost negligible unlike the day before.

"You’re awake."

He turned towards her. Lilith sat by the edge of the bed clearly watching him.

Atheline smiled.

"Good morning. "

She didn’t answer but her hand rested on his wrist.

"You took longer than expected," she said evenly," how are you feeling?"

Atheline didn’t answer immediately. He sat up slowly and leaned against the pillow.

"I’m fine," his voice came out rough from sleep," see!"

He clutched her hand and squeezed it. She stared at him for a while then slipped her hand out of his.

"You’re in no condition to decide that."

She calmly said. There was no room for arguments in her words and Atheline didn’t plan to.

For a moment none of them spoke.

Her gaze moved slowly to his face as if confirming something only she could see.

The faint tension in her shoulders eased slightly when she seemed to have gotten the confirmation she needed.

"Good," she murmured to herself then added louder," you should take this."

She brought a small green pill to his mouth. Unlike the last time, when he had taken it while unconscious this time he leaned forward and took it.

The pill melted directly.

Her eyes didn’t leave him until she was sure he had swallowed it.

"It’s sweet," he said quietly.

She smiled and rolled her eyes.

"Don’t get used to it," she calmly said.

Her hand came to his cheek and rubbed it softly before standing up.

Atheline looked at her in confusion.

"You’re leaving?" He asked.

She shook her head. Her gaze moved to the door.

"Come in."

Servants flooded in at her command. Atheline didn’t even have time to react before he was whisked away by them.

"Make sure not to hurt him, a single scratch, I’ll have you and your families’ heads."

Atheline heard her threats from behind him. He turned to see her walking to their shared wardrobe.

Everything moved efficiently. He was helped in the bath and then dressed for travel with careful precision, every step made under her scrutinising gaze.

She didn’t interfere except when she picked the clothes he was supposed to wear.

When one servant lingered too long while adjusting his collar she snapped.

"Enough."

The girl bowed low and took a trembling step back.

No one else made any mistakes after that.

Atheline sat at the edge of the bed the constant movement and fussiness having drained him.

Lilith stood before him her hands crossed with her worried gaze on him.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Are you sure you can even stand," she said blankly.

Atheline nodded.

"I’m fine just a little weak," he said.

She frowned and stepped closer. Her hand came to his chest, just to listen to its rhythm, then her aether flowed into his core.

Her fingers curled slightly on his robe.

"Don’t strain yourself trying to prove something meaningless," she said softly, " if you collapse again, it will only slow us down."

There was a small pause then his hand covered hers.

"You don’t have to worry about that, I’m fine."

Her gaze stayed on his for a moment before she nodded.

When she moved to try to lift him, Atheline noticed immediately.

He scooted to the side avoiding her hands and stood up but wobbled before he straightened himself.

She stared at him blankly and extended her arm to him. Atheline smiled and took it.

They didn’t go to the carriage.

They took a few steps to the centre of their room. The air shifted and aether gathered.

His grip on hers tightened.

"Stay still," she quietly said," your condition makes this more unstable."

That was the only warning. The familiar darkness covered them and space distorted.

They reappeared somewhere quieter. A small courtyard built outside the court, far from any prying eyes.

Atheline looked around in confusion. She noticed.

"It’s just a private place," she said, " look."

She gestured to her right. Atheline’s eyes widened.

"It’s the third mountain."

Just a distance away was the whole court. He could see all four mountains looming.

"Any discomfort?" She asked quietly.

Atheline shook his head.

"I’m just feeling a little dizzy," he said under her concerned gaze.

She nodded but the worry didn’t disappear.

"Let’s go."

She finally moved again.

The hidden carriage waited just beyond the courtyard.

As she stepped forward, she didn’t look ahead. Her gaze remained on him.

"Will we teleport again?" He asked curiously.

She paused for a second then continued forward. She shook her head in response.

"We won’t be using that unless necessary, " she answered more to herself than him.

Atheline could already guess the reason but he asked anyway.

"Why?"

Her grip tightened around his arm.

"I can’t risk it," she firmly said," your body is too weak it cannot tolerate displacement."

Atheline nodded. Since teleportation was basically tearing through space, the body would naturally get disjointed during the movement although it’s only a split-second move.

This was why most end up vomiting their guts out during their first teleportation.
