I Became the Villainess, But My Beast Husbands Can Hear My Mind?!-Chapter 207: A Path Written in Regret (1)
Zeir’s hand rested gently on the back of her head, guiding her closer until her cheek pressed against his chest. "You’re not wrong for feeling hurt," he said softly. "Just because you understand something doesn’t mean it won’t hurt."
Roxanna’s fingers tightened against his clothes as her tears soaked into them.
"You can understand her and still feel pain," Zeir said. "After all, those two things can exist together."
He paused for a moment, his voice turning even softer. "And you’re not a bad person for wanting to be loved."
At his words, Roxanna’s shoulders trembled again. This time, she wrapped her arms around him tightly, holding on as if she might fall apart if she let go. She hugged him so tightly that it became hard to breathe. If she could melt into him, she would have done it without hesitation.
"It’s alright." Zeir gently stroked the back of her head, brushing his fingers through the strands of her pink hair. "If you want to cry, then just cry out loud."
Roxanna buried her face in his chest, murmuring, "But then I’ll wake the others."
Zeir raised his eyebrows and silently glanced past the window to look at her other husbands, who had been secretly watching her all this time.
"Don’t worry about them. If they wake up, I can make them fall asleep again in a second," he said softly, but his eyes turned sharp as he met the gaze of the nosy men behind the window.
All of them wanted to make sure that Roxanna was alright, but at the same time, they didn’t want to take away her sense of comfort by suddenly confronting her.
That was why they decided to just watch her from afar and let Zeir comfort her alone.
That decision was a little frustrating, but their wife’s comfort and happiness were more important than their useless jealousy.
"But I also have to read the book..." Roxanna said suddenly. "The voice in my head... it said it will give me a gift if I read it for an hour."
Roxanna actually had no intention of telling Zeir or any of her husbands about the missions given by the system, but since her mind wasn’t in the best condition, she unconsciously revealed it to him.
"Then you can read the book while crying," Zeir replied. He sounded like he had just come up with a brilliant solution. "If I could read the book for you, I would do that, but unfortunately, my knowledge is still limited."
Zeir still didn’t understand how the hell she could read something that looked like a bunch of worms.
"I should teach you how to read later," Roxanna murmured. She loosened their embrace and wiped the tears from her eyes. "That way, we can read storybooks together every night."
She had found several books in the system’s market, and some of them were bedtime storybooks. That was why, she hoped her husbands would be able to read someday.
"But for now... maybe you can sit with me and listen while I read." Roxanna looked at him a little nervously. "I hope you won’t get bored."
[Zeir has been at the training ground all day. He must be tired, right?] she thought.
[He might want to sleep instead of listening to me read for an hour, but...]
Roxanna bit her lower lip. [...but I don’t want to be alone.]
The loneliness would slowly gnaw at her heart and make her feel like she couldn’t breathe. Crying was one thing, but that tight feeling in her chest was even more frightening than tears.
Sometimes, when she cried alone, it felt like she was sinking into a deep, endless lake, and she truly despised that kind of feeling feeling.
"I like listening to your voice, so of course I won’t get bored," Zeir suddenly said, breaking all the thoughts in Roxanna’s head.
Before she could respond, Zeir had already sat down beside her. They sat so close that their shoulders touched.
[He likes my voice?] Roxanna’s face turned red right away, feeling shy at his words. [Well... it’s technically the old Roxanna’s voice, but... since I’m in this body now, maybe I shouldn’t think too much about it.]
After all, none of her husbands would say something like that if the one inside this body was still the old, cruel Roxanna.
So in conclusion, when Zeir said he liked her voice, it meant he liked Roxanna, not the bitchy one.
"A-Alright, then," she said softly. She glanced at him from the corner of her eye, then lowered her head and opened the book.
Since Roxanna was too lazy to explain the mechanism of the floating panel, she simply opened the book and asked the system to place the panel on top of it.
She took a deep breath before finally saying, "On the first page, my mother expresses her regret and sadness for not being able to take care of me."
Actually, Roxanna didn’t want to read Michaela’s confession anymore, but she couldn’t stop her curiosity.
"She said..."
[If only I could turn back time, I would never let you go from my embrace, but unfortunately, I couldn’t do that.
At the very least, what I can do now is make sure I can make your future better by giving you all of this knowledge.
You don’t have to forgive me, nor do you have to love me. The only thing I want from you is to make the best use of this knowledge and hope that you will always be surrounded by people who love you, since I couldn’t give that love to you before.]
"From... Michaela, your failed... mother." Roxanna reflexively covered her mouth because she wanted to cry again.
Michaela got pregnant when she was sixteen, so she could still be considered a child herself.
No matter how angry Roxanna was at her mother, the sadness and pity she felt for Michaela were much greater than her fury.
"How could I curse her so much in my head before?" Roxanna spoke with a soft sob.
Zeir didn’t say anything, nor did he try to comfort her with words. The only thing he did was take Roxanna’s hand and hold it as tightly as he could.
