Chapter 150: Alec and King

King wanted to dance with me? Since when? Besides, I promised to block King out of my mind for the rest of the evening.

"I think I’m ready for a break, King. Another time?"

"Can we talk?" King asked.

"We talked just the other day, King. I said everything I had to say."

King caught my elbow. He held me in place as I turned to walk away. "Teela, please. You owe me at least that much."

I got whiplash as my head turned in his direction. "I owe you? I owe you? Are you fucking crazy?"

Stiff grabbed King’s wrist right above where King’s hand grasped my elbow. "Hey, let her go. The woman said no, and you don’t need a scene. It would be bad for Ben’s business. Bad for your reputation, and it could be bad for your chance of staying alive if Alec catches you touching his woman."

"King said, "I’m not afraid of Alec."

"You should be," Stiff said. "The man is scary. He’s dropped my ass to the mat a couple of times. I didn’t know what was happening until it was all over."

"Is that why you’ve gone pansy and let him take Teela from you?"

"She was never mine to begin with, unlike you, who couldn’t take care of her when you had the chance."

"Fuck off," King said. He turned his attention back to me. "You can give me five minutes, Teela. You owe me that much."

That was a slap in the face. My life with King had been miserable. He allowed his family to treat me like a sub-human. His mother forced medical treatments on me. She tried to kill me. She did kill my best friend. Never mind that King cheated on me or the fact his wealth was built on the backs of hundreds of human trafficking victims, including his own assistant.

He berated me. He dismissed me and prioritized his wants and needs over my mine, and yet I owed him!

I snapped. I slapped him.

The crowd around us stopped dancing and backed up to watch the show, but I was still determined to protect Ben and his grand opening.

"Whatever you have to say can wait. Show me and your brother some respect. Leave me alone. Get out of my space, and never ever accuse me of owing you anything ever again. I don’t care how many good deeds you do. You will never be able to make up for your sins against me and humanity in general."

"Fine, but we aren’t done."

King walked away, bumping into Alec in the process.

Alec let it slide and returned to my side. "What happened?"

"Nothing new. Can we go?"

Stiff said, "That’s not exactly true. King tried to strong-arm Teela. She put him in his place, though, like a rock star. If she wasn’t my idol before, she would be now."

"I’ll kill him." Alec turned to leave, but I caught his sleeve.

"Let it go, Alec. This night is about Ben. It’s about us. King is nothing."

"Not this time, Tee. I’m done downplaying what he’s done to you."

He pulled away. "Stiff, take care of her."

Alec stormed off in the crowd. I tried to follow him, but Stiff stopped me.

"Teela, no. King’s got it coming to him. I’d do it myself if I was sure I could kick his ass."

"Let go of me. I like to think Alec won’t kill him, but King and Alec have bad blood from way back. I have to be there to protect him."

Stiff said, "Teela, please. Listen for once."

"If you want to help, tell Min and Jake. I’ll do what I can to control the situation until they arrive."

I had to hand it to Alec and King. They took it outside. I found them at the back of the building, trying to beat the crap out of each other while a half dozen Together Forever staff members stood around smoking and watching the show.

I pushed my way forward, yelling at my former and future husbands as they traded blows.

"Stop it! Stop it! Alec! King! Stop it!"

I moved in to separate them—stupid move. King took a wild swing at Alec, and my face got in the way. I dropped to my knees as I cradled my jaw. My vision blurred, and I shook back black dots, threatening to take away my consciousness.

My presence didn’t even register with my men. They were too busy hurting each other. I wasn’t ready to give up. I remembered that removing the feet from under a man would slow him down.

I kicked out at King’s knee with enough force to drop him, but I wasn’t playing favorite. I repositioned and gave Alec the same treatment, but Alec was better trained. He rolled as he went down and was back on his feet, his face filled with rage and his hands raised to strike when he finally saw me.

Shocked, the fight went out of Alec. He dropped back to his knees. King used Alec’s lowered defenses as a chance to regain his footing and attacked.

"You’re only marrying her to get back at me," King lashed out. "You always go after my leftovers, but you won’t stay with her. As soon as the new wears off, you’ll dump her just like you did Leslie and Maddy and Sara. You’ll hurt her, and I’ll have to clean up your mess again."

Alec said, "What are you talking about?"

"Are you denying you dated those girls after me?"

"I dated Leslie through most of university, but I never dated those other girls."

Min and Jake rushed onto the scene and stood at the ready to prevent Alec and King from attacking again. Heavy breathing filled the air as we all took a beat to catch our breath.

"Liar," King said. "Lettie said—" King stopped speaking at if it finally occurred to him the source of the information might not be reliable. "Lettie said Maddy and Sara left me for you. She said you screwed them and dumped them. She said their babies were yours. Lettie was supporting those girls, and now I am."

I carefully said, "King, is it possible you had sex with these girls before they broke up with you?"

King nodded.

"Then have you considered doing a paternity test?"

I watched as King’s thought process was mirrored on his face from anger to confusion to realization and shock and shame.

"But Lettie said it was Alec."

I felt sorry for the man. Even after everything that had happened, he still believed this vicious woman. The brainwashing she had subjected him to his entire life had taken so thoroughly that he didn’t even consider the reliability of the source because in the world he grew up in, Lettie’s word was law.

"King, think about it. Lettie lied. Lettie manipulated people to do what she wanted. If she had anything to gain from making you hate Alec, she would have done it. As a bonus, she could force a guilt trip on you for the mere existence of these kids.

"What I don’t understand is why she allowed you to marry me if she had two women who may have given birth to your children in the wings. It seems she would have used the kid card as an excuse to make you marry one of them instead." 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

Ben joined us. "I know why. Maddy and Sara were not upscale enough to marry into the family."

I said, "Didn’t you go to a high-end private school? Wouldn’t anyone there outrank me? I mean, I attended public school and a state university. I came from a single-family home. We weren’t exactly wealthy."

Ben said, "Maddy and Sara were scholarship kids. Sara’s brother was in my grade. He couldn’t even afford lunch some days. They were welfare kids, at best."

"Why place the blame on me?" Alec said.

"I don’t know," Ben said. Maybe you were convenient. Maybe cause there was already a friendly rivalry between you and King and Lettie was afraid if you two teamed it, it would diminish her power over King. Of all of us, Lettie was most determined to control King."

"That’s crazy," Jake said.

Ben agreed. "All day every day was a challenge with that woman. I’m not ashamed to say I’m glad she’s gone and that I don’t share any of that tainted blood with her."

Jake helped me and Alec to our feet. I brushed the dirt and gravel from my hands and winced. Some of the gravel had ground into my palm. I winched and Alec immediately took my hand to see the reason why.

"You’re hurt," Alec said.

"I’m find."

Alec stroked the side of my face where I took the punch. "Who did this to you?"

"It doesn’t matter. It was accident. King was aiming at you. I got in the way."

"I did that to you?" King said.

"Yeah, but like I said, it was an accident."

"I’ve never struck a woman before. I would never strike you on purpose, Teela. I’m so sorry. Is there anything I can do?"

"Yeah, King, you can. Go home. Take care the business with these women and leave us alone. Can you do that?"

King nodded.
