Wife's Bitter Revenge Against Neglectful CEO Husband-Chapter 111: Avoiding Nan
I couldn’t confront Anya without giving King a heads-up. While it wasn’t intentional, I was deconstructing his family one person at a time. But it wasn’t just that. While King wasn’t family anymore, he was still a friendly acquaintance. He’d assisted us on more than one occasion. Not to mention that he had rushed to Bea’s aid when she was hurt. He didn’t even like Bea, but he knew she was important to me.
I made an appointment to meet King away from Heavenly Enterprises. I’d reinstated Nan’s identity as promised, but that didn’t mean I liked her any better. Intentionally going anywhere near her wasn’t going to happen.
So, imagine my surprise when King entered the coffee shop with Nan on his arm. I froze for a full minute as I kicked myself in the ass. Here I was trying to do the ethical thing, to show King a little compassion regardless of how he treated me. And here he was once again slapping me in the face with his adultery.
I knew I wasn’t supposed to care anymore. After all, I had Alec now, and King and I were no longer married. He should be able to date anyone he wanted.
Just not Nan, especially in front of me. I could ignore their relationship if I didn’t have to see them together.
King said, "I’m sorry we’re late. My meeting ran long." He pulled out the chair opposite of me for Nan. He had never done that for me, not even when we were actively trying to pull our marriage back together.
It was too much. I was doing him a favor. I didn’t deserve to be punished.
I did what Bea would have told me to do. I stood and gathered my belongings.
King said, "You’re leaving? I thought you needed to talk."
"I did, but I don’t want to sit across the table from her. I specifically set this meeting up for outside your office to avoid watching you cozy up to the woman who got the best of you while I received a cold shoulder. No, it was worse than that. I was thrown to the wolves.
"So, pardon me if I’m holding a grudge. Fair or not, this is how I feel. You can contact me later if you want to try again without your lover."
I walked away, but I didn’t make it far before I heard Nan say, "See, I told you Teela wanted you back."
I did an about-face. "Excuse me? You think I’m here to steal King from you? Really? After all the trouble I went through to escape him?
"I’ll have you know I have a man in my life. He makes me happy. I don’t need your man."
Nan said, "No man is as good as my man."
I snorted, "Yeah, that’s why I never experienced an orgasm until after our divorce."
King slapped the table. "Teela, that’s enough."
"You are right. It is enough. Get your bitch back on a leash before she’s missing an identity again."
"Do it again, and I’ll have you prosecuted," Nan said.
"Would you rather I bankrupt Heavenly Enterprises? Because I can do that. Hell, I can do it from my phone."
I pulled out my phone and started punching at it."
Nan jumped out of her seat and snatched at my phone. I was ready for her, and so was King. I protected my phone while King held Nan back.
"Nan, Nan," King said. "Go to the car. I’ll be right out."
"King, no. Teela is dangerous. I won’t leave you here with her."
"I’ll be fine. We are in a public place, and you’ll be right outside."
"King—"
"No, Nan. Either go to the car or go back home to your mother, permanently."
"Fine. Five minutes."
I waited until Nan exited the shop before turning to King. "Never again, King. If I ever meant anything to you, never intentionally bring her around me again."
"I promise, Teela. I didn’t realize it bothered you so much."
"It does. You can date whoever you want, but if it’s Nan, keep her away from me."
"I will. So, can we move on? Why did you call me? Is Bea okay?"
"It’s about Bea, but she is fine. King, I found out the accident wasn’t an accident."
"Tell me more."
I gave him a brief rundown of how Anya became acquainted with Bea and Father DiMarco, and I followed it up with the driver’s interrogation and Mrs. H’s confession.
"So, what do you want with me?" King asked.
"Anya can’t get away with this. I’m afraid she’ll try again."
"I could talk to her."
"Do you think it would do any good?"
"No, but it feels like you are targeting my family."
"King, I’m not. Until yesterday, I wasn’t even aware the real estate project was a thing, let alone that Anya might be behind the accident."
King looked for answers in the air over my shoulder before answering. "Can I have twenty-four hours to talk to Josh first?"
"Of course. All of these changes must be tough on him as well."
"I guess. I don’t talk to him. He spends most of his time at the hospital."
"I hope he finds his way when he doesn’t have overbearing women running his life."
"I’ll tell him."
I nodded. "I’ll let you get back to Nan."
"You know, we could have done this over the phone."
"It seemed like the kind of thing that required face-to-face."
"I appreciate the consideration."
"Well, I’ll go now. Thanks for meeting me. I regret the drama, but I had to be true to what I was feeling."
King nodded. "I didn’t think. It won’t happen again."
His phone vibrated, and he ignored it. "Alec makes you happy?"
"Yeah, he does. We work hard to set boundaries and expectations. It’s working for us."
"Be careful. His dad is a nasty piece of work."
"So I’ve heard. I wish someone had given me that same warning about Lettie."
"I don’t think anyone other than Daniel really had an idea how warped Lettie is. But she’s getting what’s coming back to her now."
"I suppose. I’d still like to see her well and in prison. She deserves that kind of hell."
"Don’t you think being trapped in a body that is half dead is its own kind of hell?"
"You may be right." 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢
King’s phone vibrated again, and mine did, too. I glanced at mine. It was Alec. He knew I was meeting with King. I suspected he was as anxious as Nan that King and I might reconnect. It wasn’t going to happen, but they didn’t know that, and no matter how many times we told them, it wouldn’t absolve them of their insecurities.
The best I could do was go home and prioritize making Alec feel secure in our relationship to the point he stopped seeing other men as a threat. He was worth the effort.
King walked me out, but we parted on the sidewalk. I’d parked in a lot to the left, and Nan was waiting for him at the curb with the engine running and a nasty if-looks-could-kill glare at me. In a way, the fact that I made her feel so threatened was a bit of passive revenge.
Eh, I could live with that for now. Nan would get hers one day. Karma was a bitch like that.
Alec was leaning against my car, waiting for me. I walked up to him and gave him the kind of full-mouth kiss that promised him I was all his for as long as he wanted me.
"Was that a guilt kiss?" Alec asked.
I chuckled. "Only you would think that way. No, my dear, it wasn’t. Um, think of it more as a gratitude kiss."
"Gratitude? Yes, I’m grateful to have such as sexy, loving, hot, amazing man in my corner."
I tilted my head and watched as he tried to figure out what I was up to with all this over-the-top appreciation. "Go away with me. For the weekend. I’ve not been out of the city in, um, I’ve never been out of the city. Take me somewhere. Somewhere you love."
"Really? With your schedule and all the balls you have in the air?"
"Really. I’m not crazy. I know I’d go nuts leaving for a longer trip, but I can put everything down for a weekend."
"I’d love that. Any limitations other than time?"
"No. I’ll put it completely in your hands. Just tell me what to pack. Oh, passport. I don’t have a passport. I can get one. I’ll need a heads up, though."
"You can get a passport by next weekend?" Alec looked skeptical.
I laughed. "You really have no idea who you are dealing with."
Alec kissed me again, pulling me in until my body was flush against his. I wrapped my arms around his neck and reveled in the smell of his cologne.
I was beginning to think if this man was the one coming home to me at night, I could make full-time housewife my life’s ambition. I could just picture me wearing a 50s dress with a full skirt and a tiny waist. The apron covering the dress was ruffled, and the baby on my hip had Alec’s dark eyes and an easy smile.
My phone buzzed, and I pulled back far enough to check it.
King: Give me one ounce of hope, and I’ll send Nan packing.
