Who Cares About Him When I'm Married to the Richest Man?-Chapter 82: Sudden Company Audit
Elara always finishes work earlier than Zion Fitzwilliam, and normally when Zion comes home, she greets him.
But today she really couldn’t muster the energy, so she didn’t go out.
Outside the door, Zion placed his things on the table and glanced at the tightly shut door of the guest bedroom.
Didn’t come out to meet him today, was she too tired?
He loosened his tie, took off his coat and hung it on the rack, and as he walked towards the guest bedroom, he unbuttoned his shirt, rolled his sleeves up twice, revealing his strong, muscular forearms.
He gently knocked on the door and asked, "Elara, I bought some crayfish, want to come out and have some?"
Inside, Elara was lying on the bed. Hearing Zion’s deep voice, she sat up abruptly, mustered some energy, got out of bed to open the door, and barely managed a smile under the tall man’s imposing presence.
"I ate a lot tonight, so I’ll pass. Enjoy your feast."
In truth, she hadn’t eaten dinner at all. She was too upset and couldn’t eat anything.
From the moment Zion saw her when the door opened, he knew she had encountered a problem.
She’s always gentle and lively, no matter the difficulties, she’d face them with resilience, even if knocked down, she’d get back up quickly.
But now, her eyes were full of deep defeat and helplessness, with an aura of despondency, indicating she had encountered a significant problem.
One beyond her ability to handle.
Zion looked at her deeply and asked in a low voice, "Is it still about that coworker of yours, Jade Fisher?"
She had previously told him about Jade Fisher’s inexplicable antics, and he thought that fellow was making it even harder for her.
But unexpectedly, Elara paused, then gave a bitter smile and shook her head, "No."
She hadn’t planned on telling him about work issues, as she was always mindful. She had already vented a lot of negativity to him yesterday, and to do so again today seemed inappropriate.
Even with the best of friends or closest family, no one can withstand a constant barrage of negativity. It seriously affects relationships.
So Elara didn’t explain much, intending to give any excuse to close the door and sleep, but Zion pursued it, asking, "Then what is it?"
Elara was stunned, but before she could respond, Zion smiled again and said, "Alright, go wash your hands, let’s talk while we eat. Besides, there’s beer in the fridge."
His voice was soft, with a pampering tone that inexplicably moved Elara. She lowered her head, suppressing the strange feeling, and softly murmured, "Okay."
She found it truly tiring to keep all those troubles to herself, and she wanted to talk to someone. With Zara and Esther not around, Zion willing to listen made her quite happy.
After washing her hands and sitting down, Zion was already peeling the shrimp. He peeled five or six and placed them in front of Elara, looking at her with concern, "Is there trouble at work? You can tell me, I’ve been working a few years longer and might be able to help."
Elara bit into the crayfish, the freshness and sweetness filling her mouth, and the taste of good food always has a healing effect, lightening her mood slightly.
She sighed softly, "Jade Fisher slit her wrists today."
Zion raised an eyebrow, "Did your colleagues blame you for it?"
Elara nodded gently, "Jade accused me of forcing her to hand over clients. She claimed she did it because of my workplace bullying, yet I barely spoke to her. But since she did that, everyone sees her as the victim."
Zion leaned back against the chair, crossed his legs, clasped his hands on the table, and looked at her, "Is it because you can’t prove your innocence that you’re upset?"
He thought this was the truth, hesitating slightly. Actually, Jade Fisher was someone he’d looked into after Elara spoke about her.
Jade was Penny Carter’s college roommate; they were quite close.
Penny Carter was that intern at Elara’s company who committed suicide for a Social Climber.
That man named Zhang abandoned her, and Penny believed Elara took him away, harboring extreme resentment. At the time, to protect Elara, he had both of them fired.
Never expected Penny would jump to her death.
Jade resented Elara because of this, which was understandable, but it was still unusual. If Jade really hated Elara so much to seek justice for a friend, she shouldn’t have waited so long.
And Assistant Harris didn’t disappoint, digging up something even more intriguing.
Jade’s father was the Sommers Family’s driver, and Jade occasionally visited the Sommers Family, being somewhat close to Haylie Sommers.
This made it very intriguing.
Because Haylie and Rosalind Jacobs were almost like sisters, and not long ago at the Warner Family banquet, the Jacobs were humiliated out by Walter Warner, it’s likely that those with a grudge might blame Elara for it.
With this investigation, the logic lined up, but Zion chose not to tell Elara about Jade’s identity for two reasons.
First, knowing Elara’s personality, if she learned why Jade targeted her, she might approach Rosalind or Haylie, which he wished to avoid, keeping her away from the Jacobs altogether.
Second, it wasn’t necessary, as he already started dealing with Jade. She would soon be dismissed and warned not to trouble Elara again.
Unexpectedly, even in these few days, Jade managed to slip through.
He didn’t want her to worry about the Jacobs, but also didn’t want her to stay distressed. After a brief silence, just as he was about to explain Jade’s situation, Elara curved her lips slightly and softly said, "Actually, Jade can’t affect me. My frustration comes from another matter."
She relayed the incident of being hassled and having her commission withheld by some leaders at the company today.
Zion, who originally sat casually, gradually sat up straight after hearing a few sentences, his expression turning much more serious, "Are you saying there’s corruption among Zenith’s executives?"
Elara didn’t understand his sudden use of such official terms, but it was indeed the case, so she nodded, "I suspect it’s not their first time. This time they dared to embezzle over eight million of my commission, suggesting they’ve done it before and enjoyed the gains."
There was little change in Zion’s expression, but his gaze grew slightly sharper.
Zenith was an asset he acquired six months earlier, owning an entire medical empire, a not-too-large pharmaceutical company was merely a supplementary asset.
He had left it to a professional agency to manage, only inquiring after Elara joined the company.
Every company has some shady dealings, generally, if they don’t involve principles, he allows them. However, he didn’t expect Zenith’s executives to dare line their pockets to this extent!
Withholding commissions from regular employees, was only brought to his attention because Elara mentioned it to him. He wondered how many more such incidents he was unaware of?
Fury rose within him, yet Zion’s face remained mostly unchanged, still gently smiling while peeling crayfish for her.
He knew she hadn’t eaten dinner.
Elara relished the sweet crayfish, not noticing anything wrong at first, then halfway through she realized, "Why aren’t you eating?"
He kept peeling for her, but didn’t eat a single bite himself.
She felt a bit embarrassed and quickly said, "I can peel them myself."
Zion Fitzwilliam smiled, his gaze deep and mysterious, and in order to openly peel shrimp for her, he unhesitatingly stabbed himself, "It’s okay, my ex-boyfriend also liked shrimp, I just like peeling shrimp for others."
Elara widened her eyes, thinking this hobby of his was... too altruistic, where on earth is there such an altruistic person, it must be love so deep that he’s willing to do these things for him.
She imagined a story of a deeply affectionate person meeting a heartless man and being unable to attain love, feeling a pang of sorrow for Zion, she comforted him, "It’s okay, in the future, you’ll find someone more worth loving."
Zion looked at her and gave a slight nod.
After peeling an entire box of shrimp, he stood up to wash his hands, and Elara glanced at the time, it was already ten thirty, so she said, "Thank you for listening to me so much tonight, I’m feeling much better, I’ll go to sleep now, good night."
Zion replied with a "Good night" from the bathroom.
Elara tidied up her bad mood, quickly fell asleep in her room, unaware that Zion was in the living room, took a piece of tissue, carefully wiped his hands dry, and then expressionlessly made a phone call.
The next day, Elara felt that the atmosphere in the company was quite unusual.
Early in the morning, several police officers came directly to the company, heading straight to the sixteenth floor.
The colleagues in the office were all talking, speculating various things, and when Director Lawson returned from outside, he glanced at the messy office, his face darkened, "Does no one have work to do?"
Everyone hurriedly returned to their desks, pretending to work hard.
Director Lawson turned his gaze to Elara, "Elara, come with me for a moment."
Elara followed him into the office, asking, "Director Lawson, did you need me for something?"
The director sat in his chair, giving her a meaningful look, and after a moment he said, "Elara, tell me the truth, was it you who reported this?"
Elara asked in confusion, "Reported what?"
"The embezzlement and bribery by the company executives, lining their own pockets," Director Lawson stared at her, his tone ambiguous, "Was it you?"
Elara finally understood why those police officers had come.
She found it somewhat amusing, "Director Lawson, didn’t you all analyze very clearly with me yesterday? I don’t have evidence for the deduction of commission, even going to court might not result in a win, why would I report it?"
Director Lawson said nothing, continuing to look at her with a heavy gaze.
In fact, he thought so too, this report was so aggressive, it even made a fuss at headquarters there, headquarters specially sent people to handle these things, it looked like it was planned in advance, because as soon as the people from headquarters arrived, they immediately went for all the company’s accounts.
False accounts cannot be concealed.
The police report was also made by people sent from headquarters, luckily he was timid before, involved in limited things, the fire shouldn’t reach him.
But Ivy Jenkins and Chris Chase weren’t so lucky, those two were bold and reckless, siphoning off billions from the company in recent years, headquarters won’t let them go.
How could it be so coincidental, yesterday they were just about to go after Elara’s commission, and today they were suddenly reported.
Headquarters are far away and ordinarily wouldn’t suddenly inspect the accounts on a whim.
Unless someone reported it. But besides Elara, who else could it be?
Director Lawson couldn’t quite figure it out for the moment, but in any case, he couldn’t continue to be at odds with Elara now, if by any chance she gets a hot head and reports him to the inspection team, he certainly wouldn’t want to bear the consequences. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
After a long silence, Director Lawson finally said, "Since it’s not you, then forget it, I was just casually asking, continue with your work."
Elara was about to turn around when Director Lawson added, "About your commission... it will follow company regulations."
Meaning, she would receive exactly what she was owed, without a single penny deducted.
Elara nodded and then turned to leave.
Inwardly, she was also amazed, yesterday Ivy Jenkins and Chris Chase were forcing her to give up her commission, and today they’re being investigated?
What a coincidence in the world.
But that’s good too, even though she doesn’t know exactly what happened, being able to uproot such a poisonous tumor from the company is certainly satisfying.
The big trouble that gave her a headache yesterday was inexplicably resolved today in such a bizarre way.
Feeling cheerful, she sent a WeChat message to Zion Fitzwilliam, "Zion, I’ve got good news for you, the higher-ups in our company are being investigated, my commission is safe."
On the other side, Zion Fitzwilliam was in a meeting, with senior executives in the conference room feeling like they were on thin ice, not daring to breathe heavily.
What shocked them was when President Fitzwilliam, who had just been stern with them, heard a WeChat notification on his phone and actually opened it to check.
Everyone knew President Fitzwilliam detested having his subordinates check their phones during work!
Yet here he was setting an example...
And what sent shivers down their spines was that President Fitzwilliam not only looked at WeChat during a meeting,
but he also smiled after reading it!
He smiled!!
Can you imagine that? A Grim Reaper, after reprimanding them harshly, actually smiled!
Has the world turned upside down?
Zion didn’t care what his subordinates thought; he was pleased with Assistant Harris’s efficiency after receiving Elara’s message. After some thought, he replied, "Congratulations, looks like you’re your colleagues’ little lucky star."
Putting down the phone, Zion noticed the senior executives were all staring at him, he instantly put on a stern face, coldly saying, "What are you all looking at? Do you have the account plans figured out?"
Everyone immediately lowered their heads in shame, continuing to focus and work with cautious trepidation.
On the other side, Elara saw Zion’s message and couldn’t help but smile gently. Who doesn’t like being complimented?
The company spent the whole day checking the accounts, unable to finish, the whole day, the atmosphere in the company was a bit tense, when Elara went upstairs to deliver documents, she bumped into Ivy Jenkins, she looked much more haggard, not as polished as she appeared before, clearly not having a good day.
The results of the audit were not out yet, so Ivy Jenkins was still the financial director of the company, she glared at Elara who had just signed the document and was leaving, gritting her teeth, "Elara, come to my office for a moment!"
