Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Luna Axton Must Disappear

Yvonne Rhodes gleefully opened her social media feed.

"Kisses and love, for my beloved wife. —Blaze Fairchild."

She sat up, staring dazedly at the line of text.

She recognized every word, but what did the sentence mean when they were all strung together?

Beloved wife.

’Ian loves Luna Axton?’

’How is that possible!’

’They only got married because she had a child!’

’How could Ian fall in love with Luna Axton?’

’After such a short time... Luna Axton must have posted it herself.’

’And this photo... it has to be Photoshopped.’

Yvonne Rhodes enlarged the photo, trying to find any sign that it had been edited.

Her eyes flew wide as she stared at the ring on Luna Axton’s hand, looking so hard it felt like her eyeballs would pop out.

’The pink diamond ring was on Luna Axton’s hand. Ian had given it to her.’

’A three-hundred-million-dollar ring! As if Luna Axton is worthy of it!’

Furious, Yvonne Rhodes slammed her phone onto the bed, a low growl escaping her throat.

"What gives Luna Axton the right!"

"Ian can only be mine."

Yvonne Rhodes clenched her fists, forcing herself to get a grip. Her nails dug into her palms, but she was completely oblivious to the pain.

’Luna Axton must disappear.’

’Yes, as long as Luna Axton is gone, Ian will be hers alone.’

’Kai hates Luna Axton, too.’

’If it weren’t for Luna Axton, Kai wouldn’t have been beaten so severely by his uncle, to the point that it nearly severed his relationship with his own father.’

’I’ll team up with Kai. We’ll deal with Luna Axton together.’

’We’ll make Luna Axton disappear from this world, along with the child in her womb.’

Yvonne Rhodes quickly removed her makeup, took a shower, and changed into a warm set of loungewear.

She retrieved a bottle of liquor and some cigarettes from a hidden compartment and carried them up to the top floor to find Kai.

「The next day.」

The sky was a hazy gray, with thick, dark clouds hanging heavy over Lakeside Manor.

Mrs. Creed muttered to herself, "The weather forecast didn’t say anything about rain today."

Luna Axton woke up when Blaze Fairchild got out of bed.

But she didn’t want to face him, so she kept pretending to be asleep.

A pair of cool lips pressed against her forehead. She heard footsteps, and then the sound of the door closing.

Luna Axton rolled over and went back to sleep.

’There’s nothing to do if I get up anyway. I might as well stay in bed. I’ll get up when it’s almost time to leave.’

When it was nearly time to go, Luna Axton got ready and went downstairs.

Mrs. Creed was simmering a soup, and its rich, savory aroma filled the house.

"Young Madam, the Young Master mentioned this morning that you were tired, so I should let you sleep in. Is there anything you’d like to eat? Are you hungry?"

"Mrs. Creed, I need to go out for a bit to see my friend, Joy."

"Of course. I’ll have Adler come around for you."

Luna Axton frowned. "Adler?"

"Caleb isn’t feeling well today, so Adler will be accompanying you instead."

Luna Axton nodded to show she understood, saying nothing more.

’Not feeling well? This was clearly Blaze Fairchild’s doing.’

’So he really did go after Caleb after all.’

"Mrs. Creed, I’ll be having lunch out with my friend."

Now that she was past her first trimester and the pregnancy was stable, Luna’s diet wasn’t as strict. Most of her meals were prepared according to her own tastes.

That was why Blaze Fairchild wouldn’t object to her eating out occasionally.

"Very well. I’ll take this soup to the Old Master and Mrs. Axton, then."

Mrs. Creed noticed her spirits were low today, but she chalked it up to the gloomy weather.

After all, pregnant women could be very sensitive to their surroundings.

When the weather was bad, one’s mood could turn glum as well.

’Getting out for a bit and seeing a friend might help lift the Young Madam’s spirits.’

Adler drove while Luna Axton sat in the back, sending a message to Caleb.

"Caleb, are you okay?"

’I wonder how Blaze Fairchild dealt with him.’

Caleb had been with her for so long; she couldn’t just be indifferent.

Caleb: "I’m fine, Young Madam."

Luna Axton stared at her phone screen in a daze, her thoughts adrift.

Her reverie was broken when Adler asked, "Young Madam, is this the subway entrance?"

"Slow down a little, let me see."

She rolled down the window, her gaze scanning the roadside.

When she spotted Joy Coleman, she told Adler to pull over.

The moment Joy Coleman got in the car, she noticed something was off. "What’s wrong? You look so down."

Luna forced a smile that looked worse than a grimace. "It’s nothing."

"Did you two have a fight?"

It was no wonder Joy thought so. Even now, she got angry just thinking about it.

After Yvonne Rhodes danced with the CEO last night, a lot of their colleagues had been speculating.

They were saying that with the company’s growth now stable, the CEO’s big life event—marriage—was probably next on the agenda.

Coincidentally, Yvonne Rhodes had posted a picture on her feed of the CEO spending a fortune to win a pink diamond ring at an auction.

When someone discreetly asked Yvonne about it, she let them assume it was an engagement ring.

The sight of Yvonne’s bashful act was enough to make Joy want to throw up the cupcake she’d just eaten.

The CEO clearly has a wife, yet Yvonne Rhodes went around claiming they were childhood sweethearts.

Did Yvonne Rhodes somehow not know her "childhood sweetheart" was married?

For someone like Yvonne Rhodes, her brain was purely for decoration.

She lived in her own fantasy world, completely blind and indifferent to reality.

"Not exactly a fight." ’How could I dare argue with Blaze Fairchild?’

’Blaze Fairchild is the one with the final say on the contract; all I can do is cooperate.’

"I found an internship, but he won’t let me take it."

"What was his reason?"

"There was no reason."

"Damn it!" Joy Coleman always vented her frustrations and never bottled things up.

Adler, driving up front, glanced at the rearview mirror, and Joy happened to notice.

"Where’s your bodyguard?"

"He’s not feeling well."

Luna didn’t mention that Blaze Fairchild had replaced Caleb because of her.

Otherwise, with Joy’s temper and nerve, she might actually march right up to Blaze Fairchild, slam her hand on his desk, and demand to know why.

Seeing that Luna wasn’t in the mood for anything, Joy decided to scrap their plan for arts and crafts.

When you’re in a bad mood, you shouldn’t suppress it. You have to find a way to have fun and lift your spirits.

"Forget it. I’m taking you somewhere fun today."

Joy gave Luna no chance to object, her expression clearly saying, ’Just do as I say.’

"Hey handsome, West Riverbend Street, please."

Adler focused on driving, remembering Caleb’s instructions to the letter.

Take the Young Madam wherever she wants to go. Her happiness is the top priority.

Joy pulled Luna to a stop in front of a doorway.

A large screen above the door played a promotional video, prominently displaying the name: Nightscape.

Luna was confused. "This is a bar. Are they even open during the day?" The door, however, was ajar.

"What era are we living in? Who says you can’t drink during the day? Let’s go!" Joy hooked an arm through hers and pulled her inside.

In contrast to the minimalist, almost stark, entryway, the inside was much livelier.

Just as Joy had said, people were indeed drinking in the middle of the day.

Small groups of people sat at various tables, chatting and laughing.

On stage, a musician was singing a mournful love song, his voice low, raspy, and distinctive.

But as the tempo quickened and heavy metal elements were introduced, the sad song transformed into what felt like a cathartic release of pent-up emotion.

Joy raised her eyebrows smugly. "Well?"

"It’s perfect for how I’m feeling today."

Having grown up together, the two of them could easily sense each other’s moods.

If Luna Axton was a goody-two-shoes, then Joy Coleman was a wild horse that had broken free of its reins.

’Luna’s in a bad mood, so she probably doesn’t have much of an appetite.’

Joy said, "You can’t drink, so I’ll order you some juice and snacks. How about something spicy?"

Eating spicy food when you’re down feels amazing.

Luna’s eyes curved into a smile. "Mhm."

She was so lucky to have Joy.

All the negativity she could never show her mother would be effortlessly shattered and blown away by just a few words from Joy.

Whenever she was with Joy, she felt like she was back in her school days, completely carefree.

’I don’t know when it started, but I find myself constantly thinking about my life in Kensing.’

’It’s probably just another way for my mind to escape reality.’

’People need to look forward, I know. But please, just for a little while, let me look back at the path I’ve traveled.’
