When His Nauseous Sweetheart Frowns, the Tycoon's Family Takes Turns Pampering Her-Chapter 44: Rosalind Fairchild’s Scheme Succeeds
In the Jacobs family living room, Kai’s jacket had been ripped open, and its down filling was scattered all over the floor.
When the door opened, a gust of wind blew in, sending the down feathers tumbling across the floor.
Kai’s pants were also torn, revealing shocking, bloody welts striping his legs.
Kai lay on the floor, his eyes lifeless as he stared blankly in the direction of the door.
Rosalind Fairchild cried out as she tried to pull Kai up, but he was too tall and heavy for her to get any leverage.
She tried several times without success.
Tired from the beating, Miles Jacobs sat at the foot of the stairs, smoking. Swirls of smoke obscured his face in a thin haze.
Yvonne Rhodes dropped her handbag. "Aunt Rosalind, let’s each take a side and get him to the sofa first."
The two worked together to get Kai settled on the sofa. Yvonne then called a doctor and asked him to come over to treat Kai’s injuries. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
Once Kai was settled, Rosalind Fairchild erupted.
"Miles Jacobs, you’ve gone too far this time!" Tears welled in Rosalind’s eyes. "For all these years, you’ve been completely absorbed in your work. You’ve barely paid any mind to things at home—I even lay out your own shoes and clothes! You haven’t fulfilled a single one of your duties as a father."
"Kai said a few harmless things, and you beat him this brutally? He’s half-dead!"
"Are you really punishing him, or do you think I’ve done such a poor job raising him all these years that you have to step in and correct my ’mistakes’ now?"
Rosalind’s accusations were choked with sobs.
Miles Jacobs ground the cigarette butt into the floor, extinguishing the ember.
"Rosalind, those words weren’t harmless. Luna Axton’s final remark was a wake-up call."
He had worked too hard to get to where he was today. He couldn’t let his son tarnish his untarnished political career.
Kai could not do the internship at Evergrow Group.
People were already whispering behind his back about him reaching the position of Deputy Director-General at his age.
But he had always conducted himself with integrity, so no one had ever been able to get any leverage on him.
Thank goodness Kai had only said those things in front of family today.
If an outsider had heard him, his rivals would have torn him to shreds by now.
"A wake-up call? Miles Jacobs, I don’t understand the intricacies of your political world. All I know is that as Rosalind Fairchild’s son, I have the right and the means to let him live however he pleases."
"But he is also my son—Miles Jacobs’s son."
Rosalind froze. "Are you implying that my Fairchild name isn’t good enough?"
"That’s not what I meant, Rosalind."
Rosalind was losing control, shouting irrationally, "Then say it! What do you mean!"
Miles Jacobs remained silent, and Rosalind nodded with bitter understanding.
She was disappointed. "The more I do, the more I’m blamed. The fact that our son has grown up to be the way he is today—it’s all my fault, isn’t it?"
"Fine!" Rosalind threw her hands up in exasperation. "From now on, you can deal with Kai yourself. I’m done. I was born a lady of the Fairchild family; I’m clearly not qualified to raise a son of the Jacobs clan."
"Rosalind, I just want him to be more disciplined and mindful of his words and actions."
"When it comes down to it, you’re just worried Kai will hurt your precious career! Fine, you teach him, then. You can force him into whatever mold you think is best!"
Rosalind kicked off her high heels and stormed upstairs, ignoring the mess of down feathers she left behind.
With things laid so bare, Miles Jacobs knew that pressing the issue would only damage their marriage.
Based on the signals from his superiors, with Russell Frost being transferred back to Valoria, he had a chance to become the next special envoy to Kamaria.
Now, Kai’s behavior was like a ticking time bomb.
He had to put his ambitions on hold and sort out his family matters first.
Otherwise, even if he secured the position, it would only be a matter of time before someone used this against him and dragged him down—perhaps even crushing him completely.
He took the adage "better safe than sorry" to heart.
Soaking in the bathtub, Rosalind Fairchild’s earlier anger had completely vanished.
She swirled the wine glass in her hand. The amber liquid slid down the crystal, smooth and silky as she took a sip.
’Kai really didn’t disappoint me.’
’A man like Miles, so obsessed with his reputation and determined to climb the ladder steadily, would never rush into an overseas post now.’
’Right now, there’s no one in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs more suitable for that overseas post than Miles.’
’As long as Miles can’t go to Kamaria, Russell won’t be able to come back.’
’And the truth about Jenna and Luna Axton will never be discovered.’
’I’d rather Russell stay in Kamaria for the rest of his life than have him come back and discover the truth about Luna and Jenna.’
’Besides, if I want to see him, I can just take a trip abroad anytime.’
’As the special envoy, he wouldn’t just ignore a tourist from his home country like me.’
Her plan had succeeded. Rosalind felt a thrill of delight. ’Now this is the best New Year’s gift.’
「That evening, at Lakeside Manor.」
After her shower, Luna Axton was in bed, flipping through a bedtime storybook she had bought earlier that day.
’You have to admit, things for kids are just adorable. The illustrations are beautiful, and the authors’ words are filled with so much love.’
The bathroom door opened, and a refreshed Blaze Fairchild emerged.
Luna Axton’s voice, in the middle of reading the picture book, trailed off.
Blaze sat down beside her, his voice a low, lazy drawl. "Keep going."
Luna had no choice but to continue reading. "He rowed his boat across the little river, journeyed through the forest, and climbed the high mountain..."
Her voice was gentle and clear, like a mountain stream trickling over stones—soothing and pleasant to the ear.
Blaze lay back on the bed, listening quietly.
’No wonder babies love hearing their mothers read them bedtime stories.’
’That gentle voice can wash away all the day’s troubles, letting you fall asleep wrapped only in a mother’s unique warmth and love.’
When Luna closed the picture book, she saw that Blaze was lying there with his eyes closed.
’I was reading this for Lucky, but it looks like he fell asleep instead.’
"Okay, that’s the end," she said, testing the waters to see if he was truly asleep.
Blaze’s eyes fluttered open. "What made you decide to read a bedtime story?"
"Prenatal education." She explained the theory to Blaze about newborns gaining a sense of security from familiar sounds.
Blaze took the storybook from her hands and flipped through it. "I’ll do the reading from now on, then."
Her hands felt empty. Luna looked down, a dull ache spreading in her chest.
’Can’t Lucky even be allowed to remember my voice?’
’Is he going to strip away even this small right I have as a mother?’
Her heart felt heavy, as if stuffed with cotton, and Yvonne Rhodes’s words from earlier that day echoed in her mind.
Although she had retorted powerfully at the time, it was just a self-preservation mechanism.
Logic was one thing, but the reality was that now, her child wouldn’t even be allowed to remember her voice.
In light of this, Yvonne’s words still managed to affect her.
The thought that she might be separated from Lucky was so painful that tears began to stream down her face.
She didn’t want to convince herself with her own speculation and analysis that Blaze wouldn’t divorce her. She needed to hear the answer from him directly.
"Will you divorce me?"
"Divorce?" Blaze was baffled. How did the conversation jump here so suddenly?
Luna buried her face deeper into her lap. "Mhm."
She wanted to know the answer, yet she was terrified of it.
After all, her marriage to Blaze was a contractual one. They had only gotten married because of the baby.
It wasn’t like couples who fell in love naturally or were set up on dates.
Other than their child, there was nothing else connecting her and Blaze.
Blaze was completely mystified.
’Is she at that stage of pregnancy with the major mood swings, the one where hormones are all over the place?’
’Or was it because of what Yvonne said today?’
’This is serious.’
Blaze asked, "Why are you suddenly bringing up divorce?"
