Chapter 41: Chapter 41: Between Luna and Me, I Took the Initiative

Jenna Axton arrived at Pinehurst Estate, accompanied by Grant.

After a period of recovery, she was looking much healthier.

"Hello, Old Master Fairchild."

"Oh, we’re all family. Just call me Mr. Fairchild." Julian Fairchild was committed to the act.

Blaze Fairchild stood up and helped Jenna Axton take a seat beside Luna Axton.

From the moment Jenna Axton walked in, Rosalind Fairchild’s eyes had been fixed on her.

’To think Jenna Axton would actually show up at the Fairchild Estate.’

Rosalind Fairchild ground her teeth.

And Julian Fairchild’s next words sent a wave of panic through her.

"Let me introduce everyone. This is Luna’s mother, Jenna Axton. She’ll be living at the Fairchild Estate from now on to spend more time with Luna."

’Dad addressed her as Jenna Axton.’

Rosalind Fairchild was puzzled. ’Doesn’t Dad remember Adriana Frost?’

’This is clearly Adriana Frost, so how could Dad not recognize her?’

Of course, she wasn’t foolish enough to expose Jenna Axton’s true identity in front of everyone, much less question her father about it.

’Dad not recognizing Adriana Frost could only be a good thing for her.’

’With Adriana Frost living at the Fairchild Estate, it would be nearly impossible for the Frost family to find her.’

"Hello, I’m Miles Jacobs, Blaze’s uncle-in-law." As his father-in-law made the introductions, Miles shrewdly followed his lead.

He could tell his father-in-law was very pleased with his granddaughter-in-law, Luna.

"Hello." Jenna Axton gave a slight nod, her etiquette impeccable.

Trying to make conversation, Jenna Axton asked, "Are these your daughter and son?"

"No, that’s my sister’s daughter. She’s always lived with us. And that’s my younger son."

"Oh," Jenna Axton said, understanding.

Blaze Fairchild sat to the side, observing Jenna Axton and Rosalind Fairchild.

’The lawyer had questioned both Rosalind Fairchild and Jenna Axton. Their stories were identical: nothing special had happened in the hospital room; they had just exchanged a few words.’

’They had clearly met at the hospital, so why were they acting like strangers now?’

After the perfunctory pleasantries, the conversation died down. Fortunately, it was time for lunch.

The lunch was lavish, but it was clear everyone was lost in their own thoughts. The atmosphere was utterly silent.

"Cousin," Kai said, seizing the opportunity with everyone present to appeal to his grandfather. "Can I do my internship at Evergrow?"

Blaze Fairchild replied with impartial strictness, "Submit your resume to the HR department’s email and we’ll see."

"Dad, look at Blaze!" Seeing her son get shot down, Rosalind Fairchild was the first to object.

"Kai just wants to use his vacation to learn a few things. Blaze is acting so defensive, as if he’s afraid someone is going to steal his CEO title. It’s just an internship! Why is he so wary of my son?"

"That’s right. It’s just an internship, so why does it have to be at Evergrow?" Blaze sneered. "Besides, I’d think you, Uncle, would want nothing to do with Evergrow."

The atmosphere grew tense.

On one side was his grandson, who had no one else to rely on, and on the other, his beloved youngest daughter. Julian Fairchild was in a difficult position, afraid to hurt either of their feelings.

Miles Jacobs forced a smile, trying to ease the tension.

He served Blaze a bowl of soup and set it before him, deftly changing the subject to Kai.

"What internship? All you do on vacation is sleep in. You’d just be causing trouble if you went to Evergrow."

"I don’t care! I’m going to Evergrow!" Kai whined like a spoiled brat. "Grandpa, I have to go to Evergrow!"

He’d already boasted to everyone. If he didn’t get the ’stamp of approval’ from Evergrow, how could he hold his head high in front of his classmates? How could he get Sarah Hayden to look at him with new eyes?

Luna Axton ate in silence. It had nothing to do with her, anyway.

But in the next second...

"Blaze Fairchild, if you don’t agree, I’m sending this out!" Kai threatened.

The phone in Kai’s hand was playing a video.

Under dazzling, colorful lights, a group of men and women were shouting in unison,

"Drink! Drink! Drink!"

"One thousand! One thousand! One thousand..."

And the person at the center of the video was none other than Luna Axton.

She was surrounded by a crowd, her expression grimly determined as she poured shot after shot of liquor down her throat, as if completely immune to its burn.

The color drained from Luna Axton’s face, and she glared furiously at the video on Kai’s phone.

"Blaze Fairchild, take a good look. This is your wife—a common bar girl."

"Hahaha... To think the esteemed wife of the Evergrow Group’s CEO is nothing but a bar girl."

Luna Axton quickly turned to her mother to explain. "Mom, that was the only time I ever did that. They promised me one thousand yuan a glass. It was just that one time."

Jenna Axton stroked her daughter’s hair, soothing her. "It’s okay, sweetheart. Mom’s not upset."

Then, her gaze turned severe as she looked at Kai.

"My daughter took that part-time job to pay for my medical treatments. She earned that money through her own courage and hard work, and I am proud of her."

Kai scoffed. "And you, her mother, aren’t you ashamed? If she hadn’t climbed into Blaze Fairchild’s bed, she wouldn’t have gotten knocked up."

Hearing his own grandson utter such disrespectful words, Julian Fairchild felt his face burn with shame.

Miles Jacobs was furious. This son of his suddenly felt like a stranger.

’How could this be the same modest, polite boy Rosalind always described to him?’ 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

"Kai!" Miles Jacobs roared, furious, trying to stop him from saying anything more outrageous.

At that same moment, Blaze Fairchild flung the red wine from his glass at Kai.

The dark red liquid streamed down Kai’s face, soaking his garish clothes.

Stunned by the sudden cold splash, Kai froze, unable to react.

"Are you sober now? Do you know what day this is? You just had to bring up an internship at the dinner table!"

His face was like ice as he revealed the truth.

"Between Luna and me, I was the one who initiated things. If I hear one more word against her, I’ll hold every one of you responsible."

Luna Axton was stunned. She never thought Blaze Fairchild would tell everyone what happened between them so bluntly.

That night had always been a sore spot for her.

She felt that because of the one million yuan, she had lost her dignity in her marriage to Blaze Fairchild, that she was somehow lesser than him.

Now, hearing Blaze say he had been the one to initiate it, defending her, she was filled with gratitude.

Seeing a perfectly good meal devolve into this, Miles Jacobs apologized guiltily.

"Luna, Mrs. Axton, I’m so sorry. I’ve failed to raise him properly. I’ll be sure to teach him a harsh lesson when we get home so he won’t forget this."

’Who knows what "teaching him a lesson" will actually entail once they get home!’

Luna Axton was insistent. "I don’t accept that. I want him to apologize to my mother, right now."

"Apologize to you? Who the fuck do you think you are! The nerve! This damn meal... I..."

SLAP! Miles Jacobs hit him with a backhand.

The sharp crack of the slap cut off Kai’s vicious tirade.

Seeing her son get hit, Rosalind Fairchild shot to her feet. "Why did you hit him? He’s your son!"

She shoved Miles Jacobs aside and cradled Kai’s face, his head still turned from the force of the blow. She blew on his cheek, her heart aching for him.

"Besides, if you don’t want people to know, you shouldn’t do it in the first place. She did it, so she should have expected these consequences."

Julian Fairchild watched on coolly, showing no reaction to Miles hitting Kai.

’Kai deserved to be disciplined. What a fine granddaughter-in-law Luna is. She’s not someone he can use as a stepping stone whenever he pleases.’

Kai’s face was swelling, yet not a single servant moved to get an ice pack. They all stood with their heads bowed, listening in silence.

’The Young Madam is such a good, gentle person!’

’Young Master Jacobs has gone too far.’

’He’s the one whose mind has been corrupted from hanging out in bars, yet he assumes everyone who works in one is just as dirty.’

"What are you all standing around for?! Get an ice pack!"

Only after Rosalind Fairchild yelled, and with a nod from Uncle Foster, did a servant finally go to fetch an ice pack.

Seeing the situation spiraling out of control into a stalemate, Yvonne Rhodes stood up and raised her glass, attempting to play peacemaker.

"Luna, don’t get so worked up. The video’s already out there. It’s not a big deal for it to be passed around our circle, so you shouldn’t dwell on it. I’ll apologize on behalf of my cousin. I’ll even drink three glasses as a penalty. Just say it’s fine, and we can all move on. It’s a holiday, after all."

’Look at that. So if I don’t say it’s fine, I’m the one in the wrong.’

’Since when does the victim have to be the one to accept an apology?’

’What twisted logic.’

"If you knew it was a holiday, you shouldn’t have spoken so carelessly in the first place." Her words were a rebuke to them both.

Yvonne Rhodes was left in an awkward position, her glass still raised, but her PR background served her well.

She drank it herself, downing the full glass in one go.

She tipped the empty glass to show it was finished.

No one acknowledged her gesture.

She proceeded to drink a second glass, and then a third.

After Yvonne had finished all three glasses, Jenna Axton sneered.

"The esteemed Deputy Director has certainly raised a united pair of children—ganging up to provoke my pregnant daughter and then forcing her to accept an apology. Just what are your intentions?"

The older servants, like Mrs. Creed and Uncle Foster, all found their thoughts turning to the late madam and her tragic death.

"Are you trying to upset her so badly that something happens to her and the baby?"
