Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Meeting an Old Acquaintance

Mrs. Creed stood at the door of the hospital room, watching Luna Axton get on the elevator before turning to close the door.

When she turned back, her gaze met Jenna Axton’s on the hospital bed. Tears welled in both of their eyes.

"Miss Adriana." Mrs. Creed’s voice trembled as she walked quickly to the bedside.

She could no longer hold back her emotions and let the tears flow freely.

"Ms. Creed, it’s been a long time."

Jenna Axton hadn’t expected this either. When she came back to Valoria, she had tried her best to avoid anyone from her past, which was why she chose this specialized Hepatology Hospital.

But it seemed her plans were no match for fate.

Her daughter had married Blaze Fairchild.

Mrs. Creed held Jenna Axton’s hand, which was so withered it felt like just skin and bone. A wave of sorrow rippled through her, spreading outward like circles on a lake, lingering endlessly.

As the young master’s housekeeper, she was usually calm, composed, and rarely showed her emotions.

But seeing Miss Adriana, she lost control.

She thought of the late madam, of the master who had become a monk, and of the poor, lonely young master.

For 23 years, the young master had only had the old master for company.

The two women looked at each other, their eyes filled with tears. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

After a long silence, Mrs. Creed finally spoke. "Miss Adriana, where have you been all these years?"

"I went to Kensing and changed my name to Jenna Axton."

"I thought your husband’s surname was Axton."

Jenna Axton shook her head. She knew what kind of person Ms. Creed was.

After 23 years, she was still by Blaze Fairchild’s side, a testament to her loyalty to her mistress, Susie.

So she didn’t hide anything from Ms. Creed, admitting frankly, "I never married."

"Then the Young Madam...?"

A series of images flashed through Mrs. Creed’s mind. With dawning horror, she covered her mouth in shock.

In the kitchen, Miss Rosalind with a sinister smirk, stirring a glass of water.

In the dead of night, a trembling Miss Adriana, clinging to the wall as she left.

And the young master, suddenly bringing the Young Madam home, pregnant with his child.

The images connected, and the answer was terrifyingly obvious.

Jenna Axton knew what Ms. Creed was thinking and nodded, confirming her suspicions.

’The same tactic,’ she thought. ’After 23 years, Miss Rosalind actually used the same trick again, this time on the young master.’

’The young master is her nephew, her own brother’s only child! And she has a child of her own.’

’As a mother and an aunt, how could she be so ruthless?’

"Ms. Creed, don’t mention my affairs to anyone. I am just Luna Axton’s mother."

"Okay, I’ll do as you say." ’Miss Adriana is wise,’ Mrs. Creed thought. ’She must have her reasons for this.’

She had lived in Valoria her whole life, and with her health declining in recent years, she had been to the hospital often.

Over time, she naturally became familiar with Valoria’s medical landscape.

The Hepatology Hospital was a specialized facility, but it wasn’t the best hospital in Valoria for treating liver disease.

The reason Miss Adriana chose this hospital was self-evident: she didn’t want to attract attention.

The Frost Family’s connections and resources were spread throughout Valoria’s major hospitals, especially since the head of the Frost Family was an expert in hepatology.

If Miss Adriana were to appear, she would surely be recognized by acquaintances.

Back then, the scandal involving Miss Adriana was known to everyone in Valoria’s upper-class circles.

Now, for Miss Adriana to return with a child... if she were recognized, it would be a second wave of humiliation for her, and it would also hurt the innocent Young Madam.

Thinking of this, Mrs. Creed promised again, "Don’t worry, Miss Adriana. I won’t tell a soul. I’ll just treat you as Mrs. Axton."

"Yes, thank you, Ms. Creed. Luna marrying Blaze was an accident, but since it’s Blaze, I’m actually relieved. And with you here, I feel even more at ease."

Mrs. Creed nodded emphatically. "I will take good care of the Young Madam."

With a silent, mutual understanding, neither of them mentioned Susie.

Bringing up Susie would only cause pain for both of them.

「Rosalind Fairchild’s Home.」

After hearing from Miles Jacobs that her darling Russell was coming back, Rosalind Fairchild seemed to shed years, her entire being glowing with a rosy-cheeked radiance.

Yvonne Rhodes had been in a terrible mood ever since she returned from Fairchild Estate, moping and melancholic.

Now, seeing her aunt leisurely trimming branches and arranging flowers, her little finger elegantly raised, Yvonne felt a tightness in her chest.

Her aunt was always in a fantastic mood whenever her uncle was about to return.

Yvonne Rhodes listlessly drifted over to Rosalind Fairchild’s side, rested her chin on her aunt’s shoulder, and whined, "Auntie~"

Rosalind Fairchild was in a good mood, so she patted Yvonne’s cheek and comforted her.

"Oh, my dear, just do what you need to do. I know Blaze best. He has no feelings for that Luna Axton. Besides, he’s so ambitious. If he takes Luna Axton out, can she handle the drinking and socializing? Can she help Evergrow expand its territory?"

"She can’t do any of that." Yvonne Rhodes was well aware of this.

Moving with ease at banquets, engaging in sophisticated conversation—not just anyone could do that.

Especially not some young girl like Luna Axton who hadn’t even graduated from college.

"Exactly. That Luna Axton is no match for you. If we’re talking about a match made in heaven, it has to be you and Blaze."

Yvonne Rhodes thought about it and realized it was true. Her mood brightened. "I understand, Auntie."

"I’ve already had someone look into Luna Axton’s background. Don’t you go panicking first. If you want to be Mrs. Fairchild, you have to learn to be patient and composed."

Yvonne Rhodes’s gaze hardened with determination. "I understand, Auntie."

「A few days later.」

The file on Luna Axton was delivered to Rosalind Fairchild.

She sat by the living room’s floor-to-ceiling windows, using the warm winter sunlight to open the folder.

The first page was Luna Axton’s profile: the top scorer in the science track of the Kensing City college entrance exam.

’These days, it’s hard for a phoenix to rise from the ashes. Even if they do, they just become a slightly higher-paid worker. So what if she was the top scorer!’

Rosalind Fairchild scoffed, her eyes quickly scanning past the unimportant educational history until she reached the "Family Members" section.

Jenna Axton, 46, senior teacher at Kensing High School.

Rosalind Fairchild stared at the two words "Jenna Axton," and for some reason, the face of Adriana Frost flashed through her mind.

’How is that possible?’

’It can’t be Adriana Frost.’

’Adriana Frost was defiled. The filthy diseases that man carried wouldn’t have let her live this long.’

’Adriana Frost must be nothing but a pile of bones by now.’

’It’s just a similar-sounding name. It’s not the same person.’

Rosalind Fairchild flipped to the next page and saw a lab report. Diagnosis: Early Pregnancy.

"So she only got married because she was pregnant. No wonder the wedding was so sudden."

A few pages summed up Luna Axton’s 22 years of life. Rosalind Fairchild found it all utterly unremarkable and muttered to herself,

"There’s more than one top scorer. As for the position of Mrs. Fairchild, she just walked the path I paved for her. Getting the seat is one thing, but keeping it is another. And as for the child..."

’If the child were gone, would Luna Axton still be Mrs. Fairchild?’

A cold smile played on Rosalind Fairchild’s lips as she picked up her phone and sent a message to Yvonne Rhodes.

"Yvonne, I’ve seen the report. Luna Axton is pregnant. Don’t worry about it. Just focus on being yourself. Sooner or later, Blaze will marry you."
