Chapter 29 - Take Care of Him

Oberyn remained asleep for much of the day. Rav and Ezra took turns checking on him - Ezra popping in nearly every thirty minutes just for an opportunity to catch Oberyn. He wanted to continue their earlier conversation.

In the interim, he went through his System Equipment in greater detail. Much like Alcor, he had an affinity for spears, and Alcor had a rare, powerful spear called 'Violet Tide Trident'. He couldn't wait to try it out in battle. In the meantime, he summoned it out of the inventory and gave it a few test swings.

It was light in his arms, but he could sense tremendous power from within the spear. As he practiced in the courtyard, Rav watched him, sipping on a cup of steaming hot tea.

"I remember that one," Rav smiled. "Alcor's favorite weapon. We traded for it with a Gorgon's Eye."

"I have a lot of armor, too," Ezra said. "But I don't understand some of the specifics."

Rav bit his lip. "I'm sure everything he's got I've seen. You'll be itching for a battle now that you've got so many toys, hmm? I might have some ideas for that. But in the meantime, we should discuss our upcoming trip to Asteria."

Rav swirled his tea as he spoke, pensive.

"What do you mean?" Ezra asked. "Oberyn's here, why would I need to go to Asteria?"

Rav swished his tail back and forth aggressively. "To fix him, of course. We can't let the poor thing die to the curse mark."

"Wait, you know how to heal him!?"

Rav shook his head. He hated to be the bearer of bad news, but as far as Rav was concerned, Demetrius was the only human who could have undone the curse.

"Heal, no. Treat, yes. You're no Magician, so you could become a Cursebreaker. We could...negotiate a deal or two, I think. Only if you want to, of course. Otherwise we can get Nephy-boy some flowers and guide him gently into a deep and endless sleep."

"If there's a way I can alleviate his pain, even a little, I'll do it."

Rav's mouth curled into a satisfied grin. "Had a feeling you'd say that. I know just the person to ask. Not that I want to overpromise, of course."

Ezra put down his spear. "I'll try it, even if it's a long shot."

Rav hopped up from his seat, draining the rest of his tea in a single gulp. "Well, then I must get your disguise ready. You two boys will be okay here without me?"

Ezra smiled. "Yeah. I'll keep an eye on him."

"Oh, I'm sure you will," Rav winked. "Try to BEHAVE, at least until I'm back."

A circle of magic swelled underneath Rav, and in moments he vaulted into the sky, suspended by his Cloud Magic. In seconds, he was already out of view, zooming away at lightspeed.

Ezra watched with awe. Rav's power was something to be feared - and inspired by.

Left alone, he wandered back to his room to see Oberyn. The Nephilim was still asleep, so peacefully. Ezra watched over him sleeping for a few minutes, sitting at the side of the bed.

Ezra gently brushed Oberyn's hair out of his face, admiring him. He still wondered what caused Oberyn's severe injuries, but there would be time enough for that.

After only a few minutes, Ezra found himself nodding off, and passed out in the chair next to Oberyn.

...

While Ezra slept, Oberyn's eyes lidded open. He tried to rise from the bed, but wasn't able to. So he reached for the only thing he could - Ezra's hand.

He gave it a squeeze as hard as he could, but Ezra didn't stir.

"Ezra," Oberyn said, his voice weak. "Hey. Wake up, please. I...I need a favor."

He squeezed Ezra's hand one more time, putting all his fleeting strength into it. Suddenly, Ezra was scared awake.

He became alert immediately, ready to attack or defend from anything - until he remembered where he was, realized what was happening. He looked at Oberyn's weak hand that was still feebly grasping his.

"Oh," Ezra smiled. "You're awake."

"Not for long."

Oberyn forced a smile.

"I need a favor, Ezra. I didn't want to ask Rav...it has to be you."

"Of course. What can I do for you?"

"Can you...close the door, first?" Oberyn's eyes shifted to the door of the room. Ezra had been keeping it open so he and Rav could come and go.

"Sure."

Ezra rose to close the door, and then turned back to Oberyn. "Now what?"

"I haven't...had time to digest since dinner yesterday..." he fretted.

"O-oh. How can I help?"

Oberyn lifted his arms feebly. "Do...do you remember that night, when we...shared a bed?"

Even in his weakened state, Oberyn couldn't help but blush.

"Of course I do," Ezra laughed. "Don't be silly. It was..."

Ezra cleared his throat. He knew the right words.

"It was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, Oberyn."

The Nephilim turned his head away, redder than ever. "Well...I have all these sheets on me," he mumbled. "But I need my skin uncovered..."

Ezra's eyes widened.

"Can you...if it's not too much trouble...take these sheets off me, and help me undress?"

It was Ezra's turn to blush.

"Okay."

He pulled back the sheets, revealing Oberyn's slim, toned torso. His eyes couldn't help but waver, looking over his body. He hated to objectify Oberyn in his vulnerable state, but it was hard not to glance upon the beautiful Nephilim's body.

It's almost as if Oberyn could sense his trepidation.

"I don't mind," he said quietly. "I trust you."

Ezra nodded. The Nephilim was laying there, uncovered by anything except his pants.

"But if it's weird for you, you can stop there."

"It's not weird."

Ezra spoke so quickly it surprised even him. "I'm just...a little nervous, is all."

"I already told you, I don't have anything down there," Oberyn coughed. "I don't feel shy around you, Ezra."

Ezra's heart felt like it was in his throat. The situation seemed impossible. He didn't think the first time he'd be undressing the cute Nephilim would be in a moment like this - hell, he didn't think this would ever even HAPPEN.

And so he did what Oberyn wished - removing the Nephilim's pants. He wasn't wearing underwear, so Ezra didn't even have to contemplate what to do with those.

He tried not to look. He wanted to be respectful of Oberyn. And so he set his pants aside, folding them neatly on the edge of the bed, and returned to his seat.

Oberyn's body began to glow with orange light, just as Ezra had seen once before. Once he started glowing, it became harder to make out the toned lines of his muscles or the delicate contours of his body. In a way, it felt a little less 'intimate' to look at the Nephilim's nude form.

"I'm going to try and get some more sleep, Ezra..."

"That's okay. I'm here."

Oberyn smiled. "Do you think I could...hold your hand, while I sleep?"

Ezra hesitated, then laced his fingers with Oberyn's. He wasn't sure if Oberyn noticed, but the Nephilim squeezed back.

And just like that, Ezra knew he never wanted to let go.
