Chapter 86: 82 Xu Qian

"This is Uncle Cai’s daughter, Cai Qiong. I’ve mentioned her to you before."

Wang Jian had briefly brought up Cai Qiong when discussing Wang Xiang’s treatment with Xu Qian, so he only offered a simple reminder.

Xu Qian recalled the previous conversation, but it didn’t improve her sour mood. After glaring at Wang Jian, she said flatly, "Come in."

To enjoy some time alone with Wang Jian, she had even put on a beautiful suit she’d been saving, just waiting for the moment he would take it off... If she could just see his enthralled gaze, she would be so satisfied. After all, they were both adults, and their core goal was mutual happiness. Ever since she took that step with Wang Jian, her entire mindset had changed. In the past, she was hesitant and shy, but now, beneath her shyness, she actively sought out opportunities. But this clueless man had to bring a strange woman home on the very first day of what was supposed to be their private time together. If Cai Qiong wasn’t standing right there, Xu Qian would have given him a piece of her mind.

"Come in," Xu Qian repeated indifferently, then turned to Wang Jian. "You got off work early again, huh?"

"What’s wrong?" Wang Jian nodded. He had a strange feeling that Xu Qian was about to scold him, and it turned out he wasn’t wrong.

Her next words came swiftly. "If you keep leaving early every day, how is your clinic supposed to stay open? What if someone comes looking for you?"

"I..."

"You what?"

Wang Jian scratched his head, finally understanding the source of her irritation. It clearly wasn’t about his clinic. He had told her before that he left his number on the door, and she knew business was slow; it wasn’t as if patients came in every single day. She was just using it as an excuse to vent.

Thinking about it this way, Wang Jian no longer felt conflicted. In fact, he was rather delighted. When he first walked in, she looked like she wanted to rush right into his arms. There was no real anger in her posture.

Wang Jian smiled and chose not to stir the pot, opting to listen quietly instead. Seeing him just smile without saying anything, Xu Qian lost the desire to continue her lecture. She shot him a look, and her irritation began to fade.

Only then did Xu Qian properly address their guest. "Miss Cai, what do you like to eat? It’s almost noon. I can make something you’d like."

"Really?" Cai Qiong smiled, her face full of anticipation. "I haven’t had water spinach in ages. Do you have any?"

"Well, you’re in luck," Xu Qian said with surprise. "I just bought some fresh this morning. You like it spicy, Sichuan style, right?"

"How did you know?" Cai Qiong asked, curious. Although Cai Xing had told her about Wang Jian, he hadn’t mentioned much about Xu Qian, so she knew nothing of her cooking skills.

"Chairman Cai stayed with us before," Xu Qian smiled. "He said my cooking reminded him of the flavors from the past."

"I see," Cai Qiong said. "My mother’s cooking used to have a bit of a Sichuan flair, which is why I like my water spinach that way. It’s so fragrant and goes perfectly with rice."

"Haha," Xu Qian nodded. "Sichuan dishes have to be flash-fried first, which makes them much more fragrant than other cuisines. Wang Jian likes this style too."

Wang Jian nodded in agreement. "My family also prefers strong flavors. You’re in for a treat."

The three of them entered the house, and Xu Qian’s mood had calmed. If not for the special outfit she was wearing underneath her clothes, reminding her of her earlier plans, she might have thought this was just another ordinary day.

They watched television, making small talk here and there. For some reason, seeing Wang Jian and Cai Qiong chatting so happily left a sour taste in Xu Qian’s mouth.

"Oh, right," Wang Jian slapped his forehead, remembering the most important thing. Bracing himself, he turned to Xu Qian. "Cai Qiong is staying over tonight. I promised to help her with her psychological research, so..."

Wang Jian had already anticipated her reaction, but it was completely different from what he’d imagined.

Xu Qian just glanced at him for a second before saying, "I know. We have a few spare rooms. I’ll tidy one up so it’s ready for her."

Standing up, Xu Qian said to them both, "It’s about time. You two continue chatting. I’m going to the kitchen to cook."

With that, she walked toward the kitchen.

Seeing this, Wang Jian hurried after her. "Wait, your ribs haven’t healed yet! I’ll cook. You go sit down."

Not angry? How could that be possible? Xu Qian was no saint. But this involved the Cai Family and Wang Xiang, so she couldn’t be bothered to argue. Still, Wang Jian’s concern made her feel a little better. The fact that Cai Qiong was staying over, however, annoyed her to her core.

Despite what Wang Jian said, Xu Qian didn’t slow down, walking briskly into the kitchen with no intention of letting him cook alone.

Once inside, Wang Jian grabbed her arm. He glanced over his shoulder and, seeing that Cai Qiong hadn’t followed, let out a sigh of relief. If Cai Qiong were here, this conversation would not go so smoothly.

"You rest. I’ve got this," Wang Jian said. "You need to take care of your ribs. Didn’t I say I’d handle all the chores for now? I’ll come home early these next few days as long as there aren’t too many patients."

Xu Qian didn’t respond. Wang Jian could see she was still fuming, so he quickly wrapped an arm around her, whispering in her ear, "Cai Qiong showing up was a surprise to me, too. She didn’t tell me beforehand." He added, "You need to rest while you’re injured. You can’t get worked up."

"Oh, you know that now, do you?" Held in his embrace, Xu Qian felt a rare sense of comfort and enjoyment, but she couldn’t let it show. She kept her tone hard. "You know that, and you still do things to make me angry. I was looking forward to having some time alone with you, and now look." She glanced back toward the living room, her meaning perfectly clear.

Hearing this, Wang Jian’s heart filled with joy. "I could tell the moment I got home."

At his words, Xu Qian’s face flushed. She had rushed out to greet him, intending to throw her arms around him. It had been rather obvious.

"You’re awful!" she said, a mix of shyness and anger in her voice. She feigned a struggle, but Wang Jian’s arm was tight around her. Her movements were futile and only caused her to resentfully rub against his body several times.

That was all it took. Wang Jian was instantly aroused.

Xu Qian felt it too, and her face turned an even deeper shade of red. "What are you doing?"

"What do you think?" Wang Jian whispered playfully in her ear. "You’re the one who started moving. I wouldn’t be like this otherwise."

"Hmph!" Xu Qian turned her head to the side with a murmur. His warm breath was tickling her earlobe. "You’re clearly the one who had ideas."

"Yes, yes, I’m the one with ideas about you," Wang Jian laughed, not about to argue the point with her. Besides, his hand had just brushed against something lacy. He teased, "But it seems someone else came fully ’equipped’ for the occasion."

"..."

So annoying! His words made her body feel weak. She pressed her thighs together and took a deep breath to regain her composure. "Stop moving around. That Dr. Cai of yours is still in the other room." A new worry struck her. "When I rushed out to greet you, Dr. Cai must have seen everything. That won’t be a problem, will it?"

Wang Jian’s hand stilled. He thought for a moment before replying, "Don’t worry. She’s back from the United Kingdom. She’s very open-minded. If she knew about our situation, she’d definitely support you."

"Nonsense." Taking advantage of his distraction, Xu Qian twisted and slipped out of his grasp. He hadn’t been holding her tightly, afraid of hurting her ribs, so she escaped easily. "No one can know about us right now," she continued. "You’d better try to feel her out later..."

Hearing this, Wang Jian licked his lips. He knew what kind of person Cai Qiong was. With her personality, she would probably bring up the topic herself before he even had a chance to ask. And given his current relationship with the Cai Family, he wasn’t worried about her spreading rumors—not unless she wanted to risk her father’s life. Though he thought this, he showed no hint of dismissal, immediately nodding in agreement with Xu Qian. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

Because of their little struggle, however, Xu Qian’s clothes had been pulled open, and Wang Jian found himself captivated by the magnificent view.

I’ll come for you tonight!
