Chapter 85: 81 Asura Field

The envy Li Dayu felt, and the revelation he experienced in that moment, were his alone. He had been standing at the door for a long time. It wasn’t until Yang Rong came out and spoke to him that he snapped back to reality.

"What’s wrong, Village Chief? You’ve been out for a while. Aren’t you going home for dinner?" Yang Rong was still wearing that enchanting outfit. Her gaze followed the direction of Li Dayu’s stare, but she saw nothing. "What are you looking at?"

"A phoenix!" Li Dayu laughed. "What, you want to see it too?"

Yang Rong gave Li Dayu’s shoulder a playful pat and teased, "What are you talking about, Village Chief? I thought I heard you talking to someone just now. It was Wang Jian, wasn’t it?"

Li Dayu chuckled. "You knew, but you asked anyway."

"If you weren’t spacing out, I wouldn’t have bothered to ask," Yang Rong rolled her eyes at him and continued, "I saw Li Shuang and Wang Jian go out and come back together yesterday. How come they’re nowhere to be seen today?"

"What else could they be doing? They’ve gone out to have fun with your ’special someone’," Li Dayu glanced at her, then turned to look toward the village entrance. "I wonder if they’ll even be back tonight."

"What do you mean, ’my special someone’? Don’t talk nonsense..."

"Those two rascals are never up to any good. They even took the car out today, claiming they were going to do business. I bet they went for karaoke and to find some ’princesses’."

Li Dayu’s face was full of resentment, as if he had already given up on Li Shuang. But Yang Rong knew him well; his bark was worse than his bite.

Yang Rong spoke up again, "I heard from Liu Zi that he was going to meet a boss to discuss business. Maybe they went together. Li Shuang might be telling the truth."

Upon hearing this, Li Dayu’s eyes brightened for a moment before he cooled down, muttering, "This wouldn’t be the first time..."

"Let them be. No need to meddle."

Li Dayu waved a dismissive hand and swayed as he headed straight for home.

With him gone, Yang Rong had no reason to stay. She closed the gate of the large courtyard at the village’s end and walked toward her own home.

In reality, while they were chatting, Wang Jian hadn’t gone far. He had first taken Cai Qiong with him to drop Ren Yu off at her home before heading to his own. A comical misunderstanding arose on the way when some villagers mistook Cai Qiong for his girlfriend, a notion that no amount of explaining could dispel.

Cai Qiong didn’t mind. Seeing that explanations were futile, she simply gave up, pulled Wang Jian along, and offered a gentle smile. Since she wasn’t bothered, Wang Jian had to let it go. Still, the walk home was somewhat awkward, and they fell into a heavy silence.

What a mess...

Wang Jian had never imagined that simply being seen with any woman would lead the villagers to assume she was his girlfriend. Couldn’t a single guy live in peace? What he truly longed for was the day he could openly introduce Xu Qian as his girlfriend.

"Sorry about that," Wang Jian explained. "I’ve never brought a woman from outside the village home before, so everyone got the wrong idea when they saw you."

"It’s fine," Cai Qiong smiled. "I won’t overthink it. I’m a professional psychologist; you don’t need to explain."

After speaking, Cai Qiong looked around, changing the subject. "Your village is quite large. Are we there yet?"

Villages in the mountains were invariably built on slopes. The villagers were used to it and thought nothing of it, but outsiders often found the walk tiring.

Cai Qiong hadn’t actually walked far, only a few minutes, but the constant climbing up and down was already making her feel weary.

"There, that iron gate up ahead is it." Wang Jian pointed to a slope. Their house was right next to Mr. Niu’s, making it easy to spot. "See it? We’re just a few steps away."

"Wow, don’t you get tired walking this way every day?" Cai Qiong remarked with a sigh. "I’ve only been walking for a little while and I’m already exhausted."

Speaking of which, Wang Jian glanced down at her feet. "Who told you to wear high heels?"

Cai Qiong shot him a look, retorting indignantly, "You call a four-centimeter heel a high heel?"

If it weren’t for the fact I was coming to see him and felt I had to dress up a little, I would’ve worn slippers. What a clueless man.

"Four centimeters isn’t high?" Wang Jian countered matter-of-factly. "Look at those heels. See how much taller they are than my flats? Of course you’d get tired walking like that."

"How was I supposed to know it would be so difficult to walk, even at the foot of the mountain," Cai Qiong muttered. "If I had known, I wouldn’t have come. Do you have any shoes I can change into?"

"Well..." Wang Jian frowned and glanced down again. "Can’t say for sure. I’ll ask for you in a bit."

As they walked uphill, Wang Jian could catch a glimpse of the scenery below Cai Qiong’s collar whenever he turned back. From this angle, it was indeed quite a different view.

Wang Jian could now somewhat understand how that college student had felt earlier. This was, after all, a majestic landscape, not something one saw every day. If he were young and in college again, he wouldn’t have been able to resist looking either. He was young, after all. Understandable.

"Like what you see?" Cai Qiong had come specifically to observe Wang Jian. With him looking so directly, it would have been impossible for her not to notice, which made her decision to dress this way worth it. "You’re an interesting one. When you’re treating patients, you’re completely unfazed. But now, you don’t seem any different from that young man."

Cai Qiong was extremely confident in her figure. This wasn’t the first time she’d been stared at. When you were well-endowed, you drew eyes even if you were completely covered up.

Used to it. So used to it.

She even felt that if a man *didn’t* look, there was probably something wrong with him.

"That’s called being professional." Seeing that Cai Qiong didn’t mind, Wang Jian averted his eyes. The first glance was an impulse, but to keep staring would be a deliberate attempt to provoke her—to provoke this psychologist who was ’monitoring’ him. Since his target didn’t care, there was no point in continuing to look.

"Oh? Why’d you stop looking?"

Before Cai Qiong could finish, she saw Wang Jian push open the Wang family’s gate and walk inside, clearly having no intention of responding to her.

Cai Qiong pursed her lips, deciding not to dwell on the matter. They had only taken a few steps inside when a woman ran out from the two-story house. She was a gentle-looking woman, dressed casually in an everyday short-sleeve T-shirt.

This must be Wang Jian’s sister-in-law, Xu Qian. Cai Qiong had heard Cai Xing talk about her.

What she hadn’t expected, however, was that as soon as the woman appeared, she made a motion as if to start an embrace. She retracted it almost instantly, but not before Cai Qiong noticed.

Not only that, but Cai Qiong also picked up on another detail. The moment the woman stepped out of the house, her gaze locked onto Wang Jian. It was a subtle action, one that might have gone unnoticed if Cai Qiong hadn’t been observing so intently.

Then, Cai Qiong saw the telltale signs of bandages on Xu Qian, the kind one has after treating a wound. An idea immediately flashed in her mind.

Once the thought appeared, it ignited like a fuse, impossible to stop.

Could it be? Was the person with Wang Jian at the hospital last night his sister-in-law, Xu Qian?

Cai Qiong swallowed hard. It was the first time she had encountered a situation like this, and to her surprise, she felt a thrill of excitement.

What an incredibly rare opportunity!

She immediately reined in her emotions and continued to watch, her heart now filled with a thrilling sense of discovery.

"And this is?"

Xu Qian’s heart was pounding, a mix of nervousness and worry. If she hadn’t reacted so quickly, she might have actually thrown herself into Wang Jian’s arms just now.

She finally understood the meaning of the saying, "a day of absence feels like three years."

The time spent waiting for someone to come home was undoubtedly the slowest and most agonizing. She hadn’t wanted to send messages casually, afraid of disturbing Wang Jian.

As Xu Qian spoke, her eyes were sizing up Cai Qiong. She couldn’t help but compare herself to the other woman, a competitive spark igniting within her. So, although her question was for Wang Jian, her gaze never left Cai Qiong.

Finally, the gazes of the two women converged on Wang Jian. He froze instantly, as if a crushing pressure had descended upon him, sending a chill down his spine.

This Asura Field... It’s barely even started, and it’s already this terrifying?
