Chapter 56: 54 Expressway Emergency Rescue

"What’s wrong?"

When Wang Xiang didn’t get a reply, he asked again.

"Nothing... I was just distracted for a moment." Wang Jian wasn’t just distracted; he was clearly wondering what Xu Qian would do now that Wang Xiang was back.

Wang Xiang was Wang Jian’s elder brother, the family’s eldest son, and five years his senior.

Wang Jian and Wang Xiang hadn’t seen each other in eight years. In Wang Jian’s memory, his older brother was someone who loved to smile; at least, that was how he remembered him. This was probably his deepest impression of Wang Xiang, which was why they had so little to talk about.

"What’s the train number?" Wang Jian asked. "I’ll make sure I’m free."

"K323... It should get in around four-thirty in the afternoon. It’ll take a while for me to get out of the station, so just show up around then," Wang Xiang’s voice came over the phone. "Don’t tell your sister-in-law I’m coming back."

"Okay," Wang Jian agreed, then asked naturally, "Why?"

"Uhm..." Wang Xiang paused. He was still in the train car, and Wang Jian could hear the noisy crowd in the background.

After a moment of silence, Wang Xiang finally said, "You’re not married yet. You wouldn’t understand."

"Alright, then. See you this afternoon."

Wang Jian hung up. Wang Xiang’s reaction sparked a thought, and he sat on the stool, stunned. Could Sister-in-Law have already told him about the divorce? The possibility seemed very high.

No one came to the clinic today, so Wang Jian went straight home for lunch. His brother’s call had left him feeling out of sorts, but he was completely unprepared to arrive home and find that Li Liping and Xu Qian were still in bed.

They’ve been sleeping since last night? This was very strange. What could those two women have been doing to make them sleep this late?

Wang Jian raised an eyebrow, sensing he was close to the truth. He’d felt something was off when he saw them after dinner yesterday.

As he crept to the door, about to knock, he heard noises from inside. Xu Qian and Li Liping were clearly awake, so why weren’t they getting up? Wang Jian’s hand froze mid-air, his fist already clenched to knock. Just then, Xu Qian’s voice drifted out. "Liping..."

She sounded like she wasn’t fully awake yet, her lazy tone unmistakable. The two women were rolling around in bed. For some reason, as soon as Xu Qian spoke, an image formed in Wang Jian’s mind: Xu Qian and Li Liping were lying on their sides, with Xu Qian spooning her from behind, one hand grabbing...

Having seen Li Liping before, Wang Jian could picture the scene vividly.

He swallowed hard, desperate to know what part of her Xu Qian had pinched to get that kind of reaction.

"You’re done for, Xu Qian."

Embarrassed, Li Liping used all her strength to flip over and pin Xu Qian down, sitting right on top of her. "You want to play? Looks to me like you’re asking for a spanking."

As she spoke, she reached out and grabbed, drawing a shriek from Xu Qian. "AH! I give up! No more playing, no more! We should get up..."

"Too late to give up now!"

Listening from outside, Wang Jian’s mouth went dry. He was all too familiar with these kinds of sounds, so even just hearing them was enough to paint a vivid picture in his mind. This scene isn’t for me to see.

He hunched over, a sudden discomfort making it hard to stand. Those two are too much. He felt a pang of guilt and didn’t dare interrupt, so he quietly fumbled his way out. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

However, the two women inside saw the shadow at the door shift and obviously realized something.

"Wait." Xu Qian grabbed Li Liping’s flailing hand. "I think Xiao Jian was just at the door..."

Hearing that, Li Liping settled down. "What time is it?" she asked, fumbling for her phone. "Tsk, it’s almost one. I bet he’s starving. We slept till noon, so no one would have made him lunch."

Hearing that Wang Jian might be hungry made Xu Qian nervous, but she tried to sound tough. "Come on. He’s a grown man. Is he really going to starve?"

"You’re obviously nervous, so why are you pretending to be angry?" Li Liping teased. "We talked for so long last night. Why are you getting hung up on this now?"

"Last night was last night," Xu Qian rolled her eyes. "I haven’t forgiven you for what you did with him. I haven’t forgiven anyone. Now get lost. Get off my bed."

The words were harsh, but Li Liping didn’t detect any real malice. Besides, it was getting late. She complied with Xu Qian’s wish, got out of bed, and, stark naked, started looking for her clothes.

Xu Qian pursed her lips, disgusted by Li Liping’s habit of sleeping in the nude. She glanced down at her own pajamas, which had a drool stain on them. Shaking her head, she quickly took them off and changed into regular clothes.

Li Liping was just pulling on her skirt when she suddenly asked, "If Wang Xiang comes back, are you really going to divorce him?"

Xu Qian froze for a second before continuing as if nothing happened. "Of course. If you were me, wouldn’t you? Besides, I already told him. He’ll probably be back any minute now."

"Why didn’t you mention that yesterday?" Li Liping was genuinely surprised. She started getting dressed and asked, "You work fast."

Xu Qian retorted, "If you don’t act decisively, you’ll pay for it later. Weren’t those your own words yesterday?"

"That’s true," Li Liping said with a wry smile. "It’ll be fine if Wang Xiang agrees. If he doesn’t, I’m afraid you’re in for a real headache."

"Well..." Xu Qian stopped what she was doing and turned to look at Li Liping. "Compared to the life I was living before, this is nothing."

"Are you going to tell Wang Xiang about Wang Jian?" Li Liping suddenly asked. "If this gets out, Wang Jian’s going to have a rough time."

Xu Qian nodded. "I know. That’s why I won’t say a word. After telling you last night, no fourth person will ever know about this."

"You’ve made up your mind?" Li Liping wasn’t surprised by the implications of Xu Qian’s words, knowing she had made her decision. "I support you."

Xu Qian shot her a look. "Lucky you. Xiao Jian is a good man."

"No, no, no," Li Liping quickly waved her hands. "How am I the lucky one? I’m not single."

"Pah," Xu Qian scoffed. "And not being single is supposed to stop you?"

Li Liping’s face turned red, but she didn’t reply. Her silence spoke volumes.

When the two of them finished dressing and went out, they found a note on the dining table.

It was from Wang Jian, informing them that Wang Xiang was coming back. Wang Xiang had specifically told him not to tell Xu Qian, but Wang Jian had done it anyway.

Xu Qian read the note without any visible reaction, though her tone was self-deprecating. "So he really is coming back. The divorce must be pretty important to him, or he wouldn’t be rushing back today."

"We’ll just have to wait and see," Li Liping said, patting Xu Qian’s shoulder. They had already said everything they needed to say last night. Now, they just looked at each other, speechless.

Wang Jian had left long ago and had already found a car.

Not many people in the village owned cars, but the village chief was one of them.

Li Dayu was one of the first to buy a car, and it wasn’t a cheap one either—a Cadillac SUV, a rare sight in the village. Sitting inside, Wang Jian couldn’t help but marvel at the perks of having money. The interior of a luxury car was truly in a class of its own. On any other day, Wang Jian would have chatted with the driver about the vehicle, but today, the driver was Li Shuang.

Li Dayu was out on business, and Wang Jian was in a hurry to get to the station. So, despite the awkwardness, he’d had no choice but to ask Li Shuang for a ride.

He’d thought Li Shuang would refuse because of their falling out over the clinic. To his surprise, Li Shuang had agreed without hesitation, leading to the current tense silence in the car.

How awkward was the atmosphere? Imagine this: your friend had a crush on a girl he never managed to date. Not only did you date her, but you also slept with her—and your friend walked in on it. Now, picture the two of you sitting in the same car. The details were different, but the effect was identical.

To get from Paigou Village to the train station, you had to drive to town, get on the highway to the city, and then head to the station from there.

The last time Wang Jian returned, his sister-in-law, Xu Qian, hadn’t picked him up. He had taken a bus from the city himself, but since the main road was closed, he’d had to get off at the foot of the mountain. He met his sister-in-law there and they walked the rest of the way home along a mountain path.

That was the beginning of everything. Wang Jian’s feelings were a complicated mess, especially now that he was about to see his older brother.

The two of them had never been particularly close, but their relationship wasn’t terrible, either. Now, though, it was probably about to get a whole lot worse.

Li Shuang broke the silence on the monotonous highway, unable to bear the awkwardness any longer. "Why did Brother Xiang come back so suddenly? Is something wrong?"

Wang Jian didn’t know how to answer. "He’s probably just coming back for a break," he said evasively. "He’s been gone for so long, it’s normal for him to want some rest."

"That makes sense."

Li Shuang nodded. Just as he was about to say more, a scene up ahead made him gasp. He slammed on the brakes, pulling the car over to the side of the road.

In the distance, two cars had flipped over on the highway, their fragments littering the asphalt. There were no flames, no dramatic movie-like explosion, but the long, black skid marks on the road were horrifying.

Several cars had already stopped. Near the overturned vehicles, a few others had crashed into each other. Seeing the wreck, many people were running for the shoulder, clutching their heads in shock.

"There’s been an accident!"

An accident like this on the highway was incredibly dangerous. Wang Jian immediately told Li Shuang to call the police, then threw open his door and sprinted out.

"Wang Jian, what are you doing?" Li Shuang leaned out the car window, shouting at Wang Jian’s retreating back. "Where are you going? Get back here!"

"I’m a doctor! I have to go see if anyone’s hurt!"

Without turning back, Wang Jian just waved his hand and wove through the people running away from the accident.
