Chapter 45: 45 Li Liping

Wang Jian suppressed the odd feeling in his heart and looked up at the Zhang family’s courtyard. Unfortunately, the figure he’d imagined squatting there and watching him was nowhere to be seen. He spoke softly to Zhang Li, "When you come back, I’ll give you another check-up. Maybe we can find a way..."

Wang Jian’s words made Zhang Li’s eyebrows twitch. The hope that had long laid dormant seemed to stir. He would be lying if he said he didn’t want to recover. But Zhang Li still shook his head, cutting Wang Jian off. "Good buddy, I know you mean well, but I’ve tried every method I could find over the years. Maybe this just isn’t a problem current medicine can solve. Do you really think you’re different from all the other doctors?"

Zhang Li waved his hand, giving Wang Jian no chance to speak. He continued, "Let’s drop it... You’d better make good use of this month."

Zhang Li glanced toward the house, his meaning self-evident.

With that, he said no more, simply grabbing his luggage and heading toward the village entrance with Zhang Quan.

After watching the two leave, Wang Jian stood rooted to the spot for a long while.

He lingered at the Zhang family’s entrance, secretly hoping someone would drag him inside, just like that night. I don’t know what kind of mental switch this is. The moment work was done, I started thinking about *that* again.

Standing at the Zhang family’s entrance, Wang Jian reached out to push the courtyard gate open but then pulled his hand back. It feels as if some ingrained notion is holding me back, which is why I keep hesitating.

After wavering back and forth a couple of times, he recalled the departing Zhang Li urging him to seize the opportunity. His own timidity and indecisiveness felt pathetic in comparison.

Wang Jian swallowed hard and finally pushed open the courtyard gate.

The Zhang family’s iron gate was terribly rusted. He had intentionally tried to push it gently to conceal his arrival, but it let out a loud, grating screech that betrayed him completely.

"Who’s there?"

The noise startled Li Liping, who was still watching TV. Wang Jian heard her call out, followed by the patter of quick footsteps from inside.

Soon, Li Liping opened the door and poked her head out. Her black hair cascaded down naturally, revealing a smooth neck. The straps of her tank top were clearly visible on her snowy-white shoulders, accentuating the lovely lines of her collarbones.

Their gazes met as if drawn by magnets, and they held each other’s eyes for a long moment.

Li Liping was taken aback, truly not expecting Wang Jian to be the one visiting at this hour. However, a smile quickly bloomed on her face, as this was the first time he had sought her out on his own.

Since it was Wang Jian, she didn’t hide any longer and stepped out from behind the door.

She was only wearing a silk tank top that hung loosely against her skin, making the curves of her chest particularly prominent. In this sweltering heat, when staying home alone with no plans to go out, one naturally dressed for comfort.

Li Liping had an innocent, cute face to begin with. Now, in a tank top with her hair down, she looked no older than a high school student.

Wang Jian had never really believed in the concept of a "baby face," but here was living proof right in front of him.

She wouldn’t have stepped out in such flimsy clothing if it hadn’t been him at the gate.

Li Liping smiled as she sized him up, her eyes glinting with amusement. "Zhang Li just walked out the door, and you’re already here for me?" she teased. "Aren’t you in a hurry? Not worried the villagers will see?"

Her words made Wang Jian’s face flush. He couldn’t let her see through his little scheme, so he quickly explained, "I just ran into them at the entrance and saw them off. Zhang Li told me to take good care of you, so I came over to check on you."

"Pfft!"

His expression gave him away completely. Li Liping scoffed, seeing right through him, but she decided not to press the issue.

She was still pleased that he had taken the initiative to visit.

After being so forward that night, Li Liping had actually felt a pang of regret. It was her first time acting that way, and after the thrill wore off, she worried she might have scared him. The thought had made her feel timid these past two days, and she had cooped herself up at home. Bumping into Wang Jian and Ren Yu while grocery shopping had mortified her, making her even more hesitant to approach him. Even though it hadn’t been long, she’d been agonizing over the whole thing.

She had been distracted even while watching TV just now because as she saw Zhang Li off, he too had told her not to be so shy.

She was still trying to build up her courage when the gate creaked, and there he was. Seeing that he had come of his own accord, any coy reservations she had vanished.

"Aren’t you coming in? What are you doing standing at the gate? You really want people to see you?"

With that, Li Liping turned and went back inside. Her simple tank top wasn’t suitable for being outdoors for long. Before turning away, she made sure to remind him, "Don’t forget to close the gate."

Li Liping stressed those last few words, certain he would understand her meaning.

’Close the gate,’ huh? Wang Jian chuckled softly, pulled the gate shut behind him, and followed her inside.

The last time he was at the Zhangs’ home, he was chatting with Zhang Li. Now, with Li Liping beside him instead, the atmosphere was completely different.

"Would you like some watermelon?"

Li Liping asked, but Wang Jian was too busy staring at the curves outlined by her sleepwear to register the question. He simply nodded.

"Then have a seat... watch some TV."

Only then did Wang Jian hear her clearly. By the time he did as she said and sat down, she had already disappeared into the kitchen.

He glanced at the television—it was a variety show he had never seen before.

This wasn’t surprising. Despite his youth, ever since he began studying medicine, Wang Jian had long since stopped watching TV, let alone following variety shows or the latest dramas. He might have caught an exceptionally popular one if he found the time, but most were completely new to him. The one she was watching now was clearly one of them.

Wang Jian turned toward the kitchen and asked, "What show is this?"

It was only then that he noticed the interesting layout of the Zhang family’s home. From the living room sofa, you had a crystal-clear view into the kitchen if the door was open.

And then, Wang Jian found he couldn’t look away. Li Liping was bent over, searching for something in the bottom of the refrigerator. The Zhang family’s fridge was the type with the freezer on top and the refrigeration compartment below.

Damn. A woman with a waist and curves like that is definitely the childbearing type. Setting that aside, she’s an absolute sight to behold. Perfect for a good slap.

"It’s an old one, *Traveling with the Wife*," Li Liping replied, hauling an ice-cold watermelon out of the fridge.

"You haven’t seen it? This is the fifth season."

Wang Jian was taken aback. He genuinely hadn’t heard of it. "I thought it was new. I usually know the popular older shows, but this is a first. Who’s that celebrity?"

Seeing Li Liping return, he pointed to a woman on the screen and asked, "Whose wife is she? Is she a celebrity, too?"

He was only just now realizing how out of touch with the internet he’d become. There was so much he didn’t know; he’d never heard of this show and didn’t recognize the stars in it either.

Li Liping glanced at the TV and placed the watermelon on the coffee table. "She’s an Olympic champion’s wife. She was a gymnast, too."

"Well, I’ll be!"

Wang Jian still had no idea who she was.

After watching for a few moments, he finally got the gist of the show: a group of husbands sat with a host, watching footage of their wives traveling. It featured sweet, romantic moments between the couples, as well as small stories from their life together.

Overall, it seemed quite interesting. It was just that there were several stars Wang Jian didn’t recognize.

The two of them sat eating watermelon and discussing the show. Li Liping sat so close to Wang Jian that her body would brush against his whenever she answered one of his questions.

Wang Jian felt the soft contact directly, and it instantly pulled his mind away from the television.

"Why are you off work so early today?"

Li Liping swallowed. Her mind wasn’t on the show anymore, either. As her hand drooped, it came to rest on Wang Jian’s body, and she made no effort to move it away. As she spoke, she furtively brushed her fingers against his skin, feigning nonchalance...

But there was constant noise from the courtyard outside, the sounds of people walking past and chatting, so she didn’t dare make her movements too obvious.

Their body temperatures rose quickly, and the air conditioning seemed to do little to cool them down.

When Li Liping asked her question, her lips were almost at his ear.

Wang Jian replied, "Today’s free clinic is over. Basically, everyone who was going to show up has been seen, so I just knocked off early."

The warmth of her breath tickled his ear. He began to breathe heavily. Steeling himself, he abruptly turned his head and pressed his lips to hers, then pushed his entire body against her.

"Mmph..."
