Chapter 30: Magic-transformed Li Liping

Niu Deyuan sucked in a sharp breath. "Lao Deng, you’re not joking, are you?"

He was startled by the assessment. But if Deng Xianhua was right, then it was indeed possible. He was stunned for a moment.

It wasn’t just him; even Cai Xing and Cai Wenji in the car didn’t know how to respond to that remark.

An eerie silence fell over the entire van until Deng Xianhua suddenly spoke up. "I have an idea. I’m thinking of visiting our old colleagues at Kyoto Hospital. It’s been too long. Old Niu, care to join me?"

Wang Jian came from Kyoto Hospital, didn’t he? Deng Xianhua’s intention was obvious. This wasn’t a friendly visit; he was clearly trying to stir up trouble.

This was exactly what Niu Deyuan wanted to hear. He didn’t hesitate, laughing as he said, "Count me in. Those colleagues let a promising talent like Wang Jian slip through their fingers. It’s high time we saw whether they’ve actually gotten any better over the years."

Not forgetting they were the Cai family’s doctors, they both turned to Cai Xing. "Will Chairman Cai be against this?"

Cai Xing waved his hand dismissively. "What kind of question is that? If my health allowed, I’d want to join in on the fun myself."

"Hahaha! Don’t worry, Chairman Cai, we’ll give you a full report when we get back. We’re not going there to pick a fight, but to ’learn.’ And while we’re there, maybe we’ll check if there’s any irresponsible prescribing going on. Nothing much to see, really."

*Those words were truly devious.*

Cai Xing and the others burst into laughter.

As Cai Wenji laughed along, his regard for Wang Jian soared. After all, one would have to be truly blind not to value such a prodigy.

After seeing off Chairman Cai and the others, Wang Jian planned to help clean up at the village committee, but the moment Li Dayu saw him tidying up, he shouted and stopped him.

"Xiao Jian, if you’ve got nothing to do, go home and rest. Is this something you should be cleaning?"

"But, village chief..." Wang Jian started to offer his help, but before he could finish, he was being pushed toward the door.

While pushing him, Li Dayu muttered, "You’re a doctor. Just focus on being a doctor. We can handle the rest. You have several busy days ahead of you, so why bother with this?"

Li Dayu’s attitude was a complete reversal from the day before; the difference was huge.

"Your sister-in-law already told me to let you know that dinner is ready. She’s just waiting for you to get home."

With that, he urged Wang Jian to hurry back and went to clean up himself.

The village wasn’t large, and Wang Jian wasn’t in a rush. He knew his sister-in-law couldn’t possibly have dinner ready so early. It was just an excuse from Li Dayu to get him to rest.

Wang Jian walked back at a leisurely pace.

The village felt different today. As he walked down the road, people actively greeted him.

The villagers had all started calling him Doctor Wang.

Wang Jian was thrilled. This change was clear proof that his decision to hold a free clinic was the right one. In the future, if anyone in the village had a problem, they would likely come to him first. Over time, the title "Doctor Wang" would surely be on all his neighbors’ lips.

It wasn’t just him. When Xu Qian was on her way home today, several women had actively struck up conversations with her. They commented on how her brother-in-law was so promising—a great doctor with outstanding medical skills. Others praised him for his good deeds, treating people without charging a single cent. Every word was music to Xu Qian’s ears.

On his way back, Wang Jian was stopped for a quick chat at every house he passed. Since it was summer vacation, some families even pulled their college-aged kids over, holding Wang Jian up as a model of "the perfect child from next door."

One family was particularly noteworthy. The Ren family had just held a banquet last year to celebrate their daughter getting into college, and she was now back for the summer vacation.

When Wang Jian reached their house, he was pulled to a stop.

The Ren family, consisting of just three people, had moved to Paigou Village from another village. The head of the household was Ren Jiacheng, and his daughter, the college student, was named Ren Yu. Her childhood nickname was Xiao Yu.

In the past, she used to follow Wang Jian around like his shadow. But as he grew older, after playing house and sharing innocent hugs and kisses, he began to feel it was inappropriate and gradually grew distant.

He never expected to run into her right at her doorstep.

The young woman had shot up in height, standing at 170 cm tall with a graceful figure and a radiant face. She had been pretty as a child, but now she had blossomed into someone even more refined and captivating.

It had been over eight years. Seeing her again so suddenly, memories came flooding back as their eyes met.

He was completely captivated.

Ren Jiacheng didn’t notice the look they shared. He grabbed Wang Jian’s arm, insisting he stay for dinner. "Xiao Jian, you were amazing today! I just got back from picking up Xiao Yu at the train station and heard all about how you’ve been treating the elderly in several of our villages. They’re all saying your medical skills are incredible."

"Everyone is too kind with their praise."

"Come on, don’t be so modest. We know talent when we see it. Xiao Yu just got back today, why don’t you stay for a meal?"

"If I recall, you two were very close as children."

At those words, Wang Jian felt an inexplicable twinge of guilt. They had been *too* close as children, which was why he had distanced himself to avoid any misunderstandings. Now that Ren Jiacheng had brought it up, he felt even more awkward.

The crucial part was that when he looked at Xiao Yu, he found her staring at him intently, her expression unreadable. She didn’t even blink.

He had wanted to greet her, as she had been like a little sister to him. But seeing her like this, he didn’t know if he should say anything.

Puzzled by her behavior, Wang Jian turned back to her father. "You’re too kind, Uncle Ren. My sister-in-law had the village chief tell me that dinner’s already made. I was just heading home to eat."

Ren Jiacheng hadn’t been dead set on making him stay for dinner. Upon hearing the refusal, he immediately said, "Then some other time. No rush, no rush. Xiao Yu is in college now, in Capital City too. You’ve lived in Capital City for so many years, so be sure to give her some pointers. This girl has a blunt personality, and I’m worried she’ll get bullied out there. You’re like an older brother to her, so don’t be a stranger. Feel free to tell her what she needs to know..."

Ren Jiacheng sighed. "If you hadn’t been away all these years, I would have talked to you about this long ago. By the way, what’s your phone number? Let me save it."

So that was his aim. Wang Jian couldn’t refuse. He took out his phone, and they exchanged numbers, adding each other on WeChat as well.

Seeing Ren Yu still standing there staring at him, Wang Jian didn’t want to seem biased, so he asked, "Xiao Yu, I don’t think I have your WeChat. Mind if I add you?"

He held out his QR code, but to his surprise, Ren Yu rolled her eyes at him, turned around, and walked into the house without a word, leaving him to face her back.

The situation became extremely awkward. Ren Jiacheng’s smile froze on his face. "See what I mean?" he explained. "She’s just like that. Don’t mind her."

Wang Jian shook his head with a wry smile. He had a feeling Xiao Yu was angry with him, though he couldn’t imagine why. He wasn’t offended by her actions, so he just waved goodbye to Uncle Ren and left.

Just as he reached the Zhang family’s house, his phone vibrated. He opened it to find a WeChat friend request. The user’s profile picture was an anime character, and their nickname was an interesting "Human Fairy Tale." The note attached to the request simply read: Xiao Yu.

So she did add me. Was she just playing hard to get earlier?

Wang Jian chuckled and accepted the request. He sent a sticker right away, but after waiting a moment, there was no reply.

He stood there, head down, looking at his phone, about to type another message when a figure suddenly appeared beside him, yanked him into the Zhang family’s yard, and slammed the gate shut.

"What the hell—" The sudden attack startled Wang Jian, and he nearly dropped his phone.

"Liping? What are you doing...?"

The only person who could ambush him like this from the Zhang family house was the bewitching Li Liping.

Wang Jian stared at her. She was only in her underwear. His breath hitched.

"Why are you dressed like that? Where are Zhang Li and Uncle Zhang? Aren’t you afraid someone will see you?"

Li Liping just laughed and shot him a look. "What’s there to be afraid of? The two of them would be ecstatic to see us like this."

Unreal. She actually had a damn good point.

Wang Jian quickly glanced around, terrified of being spotted, and pulled Li Liping into the inner room.

"What’s gotten into you? I already said I’d cure Zhang Li—"

He was cut off as her lips crashed onto his.

Any further words were forced back down his throat.

"Don’t be scared," Li Liping chuckled softly, completely unconcerned and fearless. In fact, her expression held a trace of excitement. "They’ve gone out for the night. They won’t be back."

"H-Hey... My sister-in-law is waiting for me to get home for dinner. Don’t be like this," Wang Jian pleaded, wanting desperately to refuse, but the woman before him was simply too irresistible.

"You’re not a woman. You wouldn’t understand. These past few days... I’ve been craving it."

Wang Jian wanted to say something more, but all that came out was a sharp intake of breath.

This is going to be the death of me.
