Chapter 472: Breaking Rules, Bones, Lives, Perhaps

[KOSTA]

Igor had never once tried to fight down. He was always fighting to win. He was always doing what was needed so everyone would be happy. Igor never questioned death and life on the battlefield.

He always did what was needed.

But now...

Akila didn’t see that man.

Maybe because that man was buried under the rage and sorrow, not to mention the impending fear. The fear of what would happen to the prince. The fear of losing, and that was understandable.

This was Igor’s Erasthai, and to have him acting like nothing this happens would be a cruel thing for Akila to do.

Igor never hesitated to go to battle.

"We can take Grealor down in a day, Igor. We have the power. We have the magic. We only have to attack and burn everything in our way... And that would mean even women and children. If the pack has survivors...

"There won’t be a way to know whether the curse is lifted. I know it’s not what you want to hear... But it is the price we must pay. The Grealors didn’t think twice about ruining ours when they came after the prince years ago.

"They didn’t think of the children who were involved. We are going to battle with a pack that has no regard for life, and if we put their women and children as a priority, we will lose. Not just the war, we will lose the crown prince too.

"And we won’t ever be able to recover from that. Just share the word, sir. Say the word, and we will do as you command us," Akila said confidently.

This was going to be the single hardest decision that the barbarian ever made.

And he hated the idea that children would be harmed.

Tamiko hated people who killed women and children, but was it something that Igor Konstantin was going to consider this time? 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

Was it something that he would try to make peace with, or was he going to have to hold back and wait for what the outcome would be?

Was he going to stay and pray that time was a construct, and that Yilena saved his Erasthai when the bargain was right there in front of him, waiting for him to choose? What was the Lycan chief ever going to choose?

Love or life?

Or both?

"Ready the men. We rode to Grealor in five minutes. We’ll burn them all. All of them," Igor said, the last bit tasting like bitter ash in his mouth, but he had no choice.

If he had to sacrifice an entire pack to save the love of his life, just this once, then he would do it.

After all, it wasn’t like Grealor deserved to have any mercy after what they had done to Tamiko for over twenty-five years. He would deal with the consequences later.

"Yes, sire... it is the only way out of this," Akila agreed before he bowed and left.

The decision was a heavy one for Igor Konstantin.

He was about to go against everything he believed in just to save Tamiko.

He was not ready to lose the prince.

Maybe that was why, before he could think harder about it, Igor went after his best friend, who was already rallying their men. He knew this was the worst thing he would be doing, but it wasn’t the time for him to be conscious of what he was about to do.

Grealor had to die for Tamiko to live.

Grealor had to burn for the love of his life to live.

That pack had to cease existing, for his Tamiko to come back.

And that was the motivation that Igor needed. Because he was desperate to go back to the only man who called him Kosta. To the only man who smiled at him like the sun was in Igor’s eyes.

Tamiko was the only man who smelled so good that he was the air that Igor needed to breathe.

Running his hand down his face, Igor watched as Akila rallied their men for the most dangerous war that had been fought by the barbarians and even the Lycans of Kawaii.

As Igor slowly leaned, there were Kawai warriors who wanted to tag along, but he couldn’t let that happen. This was way too personal, and if he had to die, then he preferred to die beside his barbarians and brothers.

It was just what he had decided on, and no one would change his mind.

"Barbarians! Today, we take on the most dangerous mission yet since we came together as brothers in arms. It is a war that will determine a lot of things, and I won’t blame you for wanting to stay back. This is a battle of choice.

"One that you are not obligated to fight for me, yet one that I must fight to save Tamiko and myself. I cannot lose him, which is why today, we ride... not for glory or power. We ride to annihilate.

"Because only by annihilating them all can my prince live. We ride for the prince who wouldn’t have hesitated to lead us into battle, for the prince who never stepped back when it was time to fight.

"We ride for the prince who was taken from us years ago. Only to be brought back and get hurt again, by Grealor. For as long as Grealor lives, the prince will suffer. That is the unfortunate decree by fate. But we can change that.

"We will change that. I intend to change that!!" Igor said grimly that the idea of saving Tamiko overwhelmed the red flags that came with this mission, not to mention the lines that he had to cross for Tamiko.

But he didn’t mind.

Wasn’t about to remind himself what the pain that he would like. He was doing it for love, and not even the mad king would be able to stop him. No one would stand before him this time unless it was a healthy Tamiko.

"For the prince!!!!" The barbarians roared in unison, their excitement spanning through the kingdom that had been holding its breath for the fate of the prince.

They acted, but the barbarians had found an avenue to make certain that things would be alright even if the price was too high. There was no going back, and when Igor saw how excited they were, it was the one time he could breathe since last night.

"Let’s get going!!!" Igor shouted, and the barbarians mounted their horses, their swords shining into the morning that had been the most stressful for them.

It was obvious that none of the barbarians had one back home to rest; they had been waiting on Igor, and now that he was her eerie excitement at his return was something that was heard across the kingdom.

"Sire... It’s time," Akila said to Igor when he noticed the Lycan chief was still distracted despite his men having crossed the borders of Kawai into Grealor already.

Igor was still looking at the west side of the palace, his heart warming and cracking at the same time. The Lycan king was there by the window, the dejected look on his face and his despair something that told Igor more than words ever could.

Tamiko was still in pain.

Tamiko was still unconscious.

Tamiko was still hurting over the ultimatum.

And Igor fisted his hands, his rage threatening to make a show in that moment too.

So defeatedly, he looked away, back to his friend who was waiting for him, swords in their hands as they mounted their horses and disappeared into the horizon, knowing damn well that what they were headed to do was the kind that even the devil would forever be shocked about.

But it didn’t matter, did it?

"I’ll. Make them pay, krushka. I’ll. Make sure there won’t be anything left of them. If not for the ultimatum, then for your peace, my beautiful," Igor swore under his breath as he steadied himself, hoping that his understanding of the mission was critical.

But even that did tame the images of a defeated unconscious and weaker Tamiko from popping back into his head, he tried his best to shake it all away, but it was useless.

His love was the tether that held them together.

They would come out of this with grace, and no one would say shit to that anymore. Not even Yilena.

Igor would make certain of that.
