Chapter 459: Running Away Never Helped

[KOSTA]

Tamiko was deflecting.

That was the first thing that Kosta had noticed the moment he had stepped away from the Lycan prince.

He knew it wasn’t because of him or anything, but there was more to them than the way that Yilena had walked in, her head held high like she didn’t just fuck them both up and mess up other lives.

It was the one thing that anyone with sense wouldn’t want to be forced into, but here they were. This was not the kind of life they had anticipated. They had not wanted the evening after winning the war.

And Tamiko was trying to distract himself from it all.

Kosta wanted to say no.

He wanted to stop and tell Tamiko that they would be alright, but even he knew that would just be another curse for them to never be together. The price was already choking them, and the distance in the past few weeks was not doing them any favors.

Kosta had kept his distance because he wanted to make sure Tamiko didn’t get hurt when they were eventually separated by the ultimatum, but clearly, what he had done just caused more damage.

Distance was not what they needed.

It was a hard reality, but it had hit Kosta hard in the way that Tamiko had been dancing with Danny. It wasn’t the kind of dance that was bound to make Kosta jealous, but it was more of a cry for help.

And Danny, thankfully, was there for Tamiko.

But then even Kosta knew that there was only so much that Danny could do to save Tamiko. It was a moment that not even Danny would make them feel better.

And when the king begged for anyone to get the two off the dancefloor, Kosta knew he had to go back for him. He knew he couldn’t leave him there, not out of obligation as his Erasthai, but because he could see Tamiko was hurting.

Even he was smart enough to see that it wasn’t just about the ultimatum anymore.

Tamiko was still reeling from the cowardice Kosta had displayed the night Sanji died. It was something that would remain an eternal shame for Kosta, but it wasn’t like he could turn back time and change it.

That shit had happened, and there was no point, right?

But why was Tamiko hurting so badly because of it then?

"He abandoned you," Kosta stated flatly as he watched Danny disappear into the crowds.

"Yeah, well. He’s the bravest of the two of us. What’s up, partner? Do you want to dance with me?" Tamiko asked, like it was just another day for them, and they didn’t have the weight of the world pressing down on both their shoulders.

It was a burden that they had to carry whether they liked it or not. They had to embrace it all. Because at the end of the day, no one was ever really going to save them if they didn’t choose to save themselves.

"You have two left feet," Kosta added plainly, and Tamiko pouted at him.

Of course, he knew he had two left feet, but there was something in the way that Kosta had said it that had him wondering if this was really the end of the road for both of them.

Maybe Tamiko needed to stop hoping, but then what else was he supposed to do?

He was the most powerful prince in the kingdom, and he couldn’t even be close with his Erasthai without causing chaos in the realm.

That wasn’t the kind of shit that anyone in their right senses wanted to be a part of, yet it was the curse that never stopped taking from him.

"Yeah," Tamiko sighed softly as he got up from the floor and dusted himself up. It was as if he was trying to make conversation with Kosta, or at least that much he had convinced himself.

It made no sense whatsoever because, at the end of the day, there wasn’t much progress that they could both show for this. It was as if the world itself was against them; they couldn’t say or do shit about it anymore.

Maybe one day, but not today, right?

"I’ll... I’ll get out of your hair. The fun princess," Tamiko said defeatedly, before he stepped back and began to walk away.

He couldn’t stand the shame of being close to Kosta and yet so far away.

It was a burn that made his heart heavy.

The entire time, they had been acting like there was an entire block wall between them, and now there wasn’t much left. With Yilena at the banquet, nothing they did would make it make sense.

They were doomed either way.

There was no saving them from the cursed ultimatum, and the sooner they embraced it all, the better it would be for them. After all, life was always going to be a puzzle for them.

They couldn’t fight their way to this one because it was a battle that they had lost. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

"I’m sorry," Kosta whispered, and before Tamiko could ask what it was about, he was suddenly spun around, and plump, full lips met him in a passionate, hungry kiss.

Tamiko was too stunned and was ready to fight, but then, when the caramel scent hit his nose, and she breathed it in, in copious amounts, Tamiko relaxed.

He didn’t fight it.

He returned the kiss with the same energy. They were both hungry for each other. So much so that they ignored the cheers around them and the shocked glares of the people who knew what the ultimatum was like for them.

This was a clear violation of the ultimatum.

This was a kind of madness that time wouldn’t allow, but would it matter when this was an ounce of peace and a reminder that they had won endless wars before this? Would it ever really matter at all?

The world was a whole space that they could share, and yet Kawai itself seemed to be closing in on them even though they were the strongest Lycans in the realm.

This was a different kind of loneliness.

And perhaps that was why the two didn’t let go.

Even when the cheers turned into shouts of ’get a room’, and ’don’t tell me they want to fuck each other here.’

It was a delightful moment at first.

However, for the two, it was a stolen moment of passion.

A moment that they had waited for so long, it was as if they didn’t care anymore. But how could they be, when Yilena was there with them and waiting for whatever the fuck they would do to each other?

In the near distance, Yilena Sidorova stared coldly.

She had warned them.

Told them not to get close to each other.

The ball should have given them enough reasons to keep themselves busy, and yet here she was seeing them, watching the unexpected unfold, and in the worst of ways for her. This was pure disrespect, and she wasn’t sure if this was something that would take.

She wanted to step forward and remind them that they were going against the ultimatum. That they were breaking the promise and vow. That there would be very dire consequences for that.

But who had the power to say what was right or wrong at this moment?

Did she even have the power to keep them apart even then?

"Yilena," Lord Sadako greeted suddenly.
