Chapter 447: Of Hearts That Wouldn’t Relent

[KAWAI]

The ultimatum.

The one thing that had forced two hearts to go their separate ways in the worst of ways was the one law that had forced two souls apart for over ten years. And even to this day, it was still something that haunted them.

Sure, they were not showing it as much, but they knew it was there.

Like a plague, they would never really be able to shake away. Like a life that wouldn’t let me give up in the face of the wars. Like a pointless battle, yet they had to keep fighting.

The king hated it.

The Lycan lords hated it.

The Lycan chief despised it.

And the prince... Gods, he was so close to slapping Yilena’s head off her neck just to keep his Erasthai and his happiness. It was something that neither of them could fight with ease, but they had to think of a way out.

Especially now that Tamiko has done the impossible in the name of love.

Anyone who tried to take his Erasthai away from him was risking insanity, and that was something that Tamiko didn’t mind giving in to. After all, he had managed to bring down Zula, who was her aunt.

So, what of Yilena Sidorova, the myth of Kawai, then?

"They’re both carrying the weight of their love on their shoulders, not willing to let anyone see how heavy it all weighs on them. It’s breaking them from the inside," King Zaffuto said.

Lord Sadako knew exactly what the king was talking about.

They had all seen it on the battlefield.

"It won’t bend easily, Zaffuto. They were bound by blood and her promise of an eternity, either of loneliness and separation or an eternity of happiness. There was no in between... Even now, there is none.

"It’s like a curse Yilena forced on them," Sadako said, and the king sighed angrily. He didn’t want to fight with his youngest sister, and not even when they were just getting everything for the kingdom to run smoothly.

He didn’t want to be the one who upset his little sister, but this was about his son’s happiness. This was about the boy he had watched cover up everything to his beloved. The son who hadn’t hesitated to lay down his weapons in the name of love.

That was not the kind of love that would relent just because Yilena Sidorova had given them an ultimatum. It was becoming a thin line, and the king wasn’t sure if he was going to sacrifice his son’s happiness for his sister’s life.

That was selfishness, but it wasn’t like Yilena was giving them as many options at the moment. It was like Yilena was welcoming them with open arms in the one place that screamed doom for them.

This was not right.

They knew it too, and the sooner that it was settled, the sooner life would go on. But how the fuck was life to continue the?

"What am I to do if it breaks them? What happens when the kingdom realizes that the tales being spun around can only ever remain tales and that the heir to the most powerful crown is left to drown in loneliness because of a love he isn’t allowed to keep?

"What then?" the king asked, his devastation evident.

He loathed that his son’s happiness was bound to be limited because of his sister. He hated that there wasn’t much that he could do because that was an ultimatum forged in blood.

That there wasn’t a lot on the side of love and life for the kids because Yilena was not ready to accept what it was for them. Perhaps it was going to be the mad king’s greatest challenge, but what other choice was there for him?

Especially as a father and not a king?

"Those kids will follow their hearts like they have been doing for the altar years. Think of all the times they were past and somehow still managed to pull themselves towards each other without any intervention.

"Think of all the stakes that were out there and how they did that; instead, they chose their love, brother. Think of how they would burn for each other or rise with each other.

"You and I know they won’t mind losing themselves if it means that they do it together. That is the scariest part of it all," Lord Sadako said, his words tearing through the mad king’s heart like they were the worst kind of weapons.

This was the kind of hurt that he would never have any control over, and it was unnerving for the king because he had sworn his son would be happy. He had promised his Liana that their son would have everything.

Hell, they both had promised Sahina that they would take care of Kosta, too.

But now it was as if they were watching the vow be blown all because they couldn’t find a way to make it all right for the kids they lived with, and Yilena was too stubborn to go into anyone’s suggestions.

"The throb means nothing without a Hinata on it, Sadako. If they lose themselves... If I lose them... I won’t survive it," the king added softly.

This right here was not a battle that could be won with swords. This one did not need both of them to step up and wield their weapons in the right way. This was more delicate and sneezed better strategies.

But what the fuck kind of strategy were they to use against an oath that had been bound to fate and one that would ruin them, especially now that they had marked each other again?

What were they to expect of the chaos that they had gotten to endure because of the battle today, then?

"That makes it worse because they will fight the fates to stay together, and the blood oath will have the fates fighting back," Sadako said quietly, like he was afraid that those kids were happily jumping ahead of them.

They were already at the palace, and the two Erasthais were to rest for the night.

It was as if it was a normal day for when in reality this was the day that wouldn’t end well for anyone. It was the kind that would bring the most hurt more than anything else. This wasn’t alright.

"I—" Zaffuto began, only to be interrupted by his son’s voice.

"Papa!" Tamiko shouted, giggling like the bowl was all peaceful. And like they hadn’t almost lost him out here. He looked happy as hell, and with his hands entwined with Kosta, anyone would assume that the day had gone well for him.

Maybe it really had.

Maybe they had gone through the worst of the worst already.

Maybe the storm that they were to face was already done, but that didn’t make it any easier for them because right now, none of that would matter if Yilena were to show up and ask the impossible of them all.

It was a burden that the king was not ready to lean into.

Not yet.

He wasn’t ready to lose his son, and he would be damned if he let anyone, even his side, wipe the smile off that face.

"You sound happy, kid. What’s up?" the king tried to sound normal, but he was trembling.

His voice was shaking.

Perhaps from rage or maybe from anxiety because of the potential choices he would make for the sake of this kid.

Maybe he needed to stop thinking too much, but e be if he didn’t, the universe wasn’t going to be all mushy and shit just because he chose not to take the long road away from everything.

"You sound worried... Are you alright?" Tamiko asked.

The mad king of Kawai turned to look at Sadako, as if asking his best friend to save him from the uncertainty right then. He didn’t know what to say to make things right.

Hell, his fears didn’t seem to want to let him lean into the possibility of what life would be like for both of them.

"His hair is probably going to flake from the shock you gave him on the battlefield, son," Sadako said, looking at the king softly.

He sounded like he was teasing the man, but they both knew that it was more factual than anything they would ever be able to name.

This wasn’t the time for any wild thoughts, but there was only so much that they could do out here. Perhaps there was more to life than they could embrace this time, yeah?

"Oh, come on, uncle. Papa is not that weak," Tamiko chuckled, but even he knew that what he had done was a lot to recover from. He had seen and felt the way Kosta had been too scared, and Kosta wasn’t even his father.

He could only imagine what King Zaffuto had felt.

Maybe that was why Tamiko wanted to lighten the mood, too, because honestly, what he had done was out of their norm. It was the kind of shit that even the monsters were not sure where to start from.

"You’re right," Sadako let out a forced laugh, as if to ease the tension that threatened to take over.

"You guys are teasing me, and it isn’t even morning yet," the king let out a sigh of relief, and Tamiko rushed to him suddenly, hugging his father like that was what the old king needed after the kind of day that he had.

Maybe that was all that he could do today. Maybe that was all that they had left to do.

"Tamiko..." King Zaffuto trailed off uncertainly.

"Kaito... Tamiko Kaito Hinata," the son said, and his father relaxed.

"My little angel."

"I’m fine, Papa. I really am. Let’s go home," the prince chuckled softly.
