Unlimited estates for rural beauty-Chapter 464 Running Away From Home (4)
"Uncle, I want to ride your carriage to the neighboring Prefecture Government," Yueyue said, peering up with her bright, misty eyes at the dark-skinned man.
Fa Ergou looked down and saw two children. Surprised, he widened his eyes and looked around, but saw no adults accompanying them. He then squatted down and, gazing at the two delicately featured children, softly advised, "Little ones, where are your dad and mom? Why aren’t they with you? Or have you gotten lost?"
Yueyue and Qiqi shook their heads in unison, "Uncle, we’re not lost. Our dad and mom are waiting at home for us~" Yueyue said with a slight smile, revealing two charming dimples on her face.
Though Qiqi was also shaking his head inwardly, he knew his sister hadn’t exactly misspoken; their mother was indeed waiting for them in the palace. However, the problem was that their home wasn’t in the neighboring Prefecture Government, but in the Imperial Palace. Seeing that the carriage driver completely believed his innocent-looking sister, Qiqi silently mourned for him for three seconds.
Fa Ergou nodded, his gaze falling on the pair of delicate children dressed in fine clothes, clearly from a family of status. Thinking of his own newly born son at home, his heart instantly softened, "Hurry on up, kids. Uncle will take you there for free, to prevent your dad and mom from worrying." He picked up Yueyue and placed her in the carriage, made sure she was settled, and then lifted Qiqi in as well, muttering under his breath while doing so, "Whose children are these, not being watched properly? What if they get lost, sigh."
Inside the carriage, Qiqi and Yueyue listened to the driver’s muttering and couldn’t help but cover their mouths and giggle.
As evening approached, they finally arrived at the neighboring Prefecture Government. After dismounting from the carriage, though the man insisted on not taking any silver, Yueyue felt he was not well off. Thus, she forced a hundred wen into his hand before she and her brother ran toward the city gate, looking up at the bold characters: "Wangjiang Prefecture."
Qiqi also looked up at the characters, took his sister’s hand, and together they entered the city. Walking along the bustling street and seeing all the different stalls on both sides, Yueyue looked left and right, but didn’t spend any silver. When Qiqi asked why she wasn’t buying anything, Yueyue gave him a sidelong glance of disdain, "Carrying all that extra stuff while on the run, don’t you find it tiring? Just looking is satisfying enough. Besides, what don’t we have in mother’s storage space? I’m just curious, that’s all. Geez, you can be so dense."
Qiqi’s little face turned red with frustration as he glared at his sister, pouting and rolling his eyes, he said irritably, "If you’re not buying, then stop looking. Otherwise, you might get sty in your eye." He grabbed her hand and pulled her along, striding forward.
With an indignant jump, Yueyue turned to look back at her brother, stuck out her tongue, made a face, and then pouted, trailing behind him.
Scanning the inns on both sides of the street, Qiqi alternated his gaze between Dragon Gate Inn and Fengniao Inn. Yueyue also looked back and forth, "Brother, do you think the owners of these two inns know each other?"
Qiqi nodded, as if it were obvious, "Very likely. Look, one is named Dragon and the other Phoenix, and they’re facing each other. Isn’t it clear they’re provoking each other? They seem like a pair of love-hate rivals."
Yueyue nodded in agreement, then turned to her brother, "So, which inn shall we stay at?"
Qiqi pointed, and his sister followed his gesture, "Fengniao Inn?" Yueyue was surprised, having thought her brother would choose Dragon Gate Inn. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦
"Yes, let’s go," he said, pulling her into the grand lobby of Fengniao Inn.
The attendant saw a boy and a girl enter and looked behind them for any accompanying adults but found none. Confused, he bent down to inquire, "Little friends, this is an inn. Have you perhaps come to the wrong place?"
Qiqi and Yueyue shook their heads in unison, "No, we’re here to stay." Qiqi stepped forward, protectively standing in front of his sister as he responded.
The attendant was instantly puzzled, blinking and pointing at Qiqi and Yueyue, his voice rising an octave in surprise, "You, you’re here to stay?"
A frosty displeasure crossed Yueyue’s face as she coldly looked at the attendant, "Didn’t your mom teach you that pointing fingers at others is impolite?"
The attendant, embarrassed, withdrew his hand, his face turning red as he encountered the snickers from others in the lobby. Unable to save face, he glared at the two children, "Stop messing around and leave. This is not a place for begging." He then began pushing Qiqi and Yueyue towards the exit.
With a swift motion, Qiqi slapped the attendant’s hand away, his cold gaze fixed on him, "Which of your eyes saw us begging?"
"Brother, he must be inhuman since he can’t understand human speech. We should call for the shopkeeper and ask why they employed something that doesn’t understand human words," Yueyue said, glaring indignantly at the attendant with wide eyes.
The attendant, momentarily dazed, scrutinized the back-and-forth responses between the siblings. Upon closer inspection of their clothing, he realized they did not appear to be beggars. The gold ornament on the little girl alone was worth more than his entire outfit in silver.
