Chapter 218: Boarding The Carriage

A few minutes later, all of them began to walk out of the forest.

During that, Rion introduced everyone to Calvus.

He raised his hands towards Dora and said, "She is Dora, my first friend."

His hand shifted towards Yuura. "He is Yuura, he is fast on his feet and is a very skilled hunter."

"She is Zaisha, she is good with herbs... she was the one who told me the way to find that yellowspint."

As Rion was introducing them, Jamie whispered in Calvus’s ear, "Even though he is ignorant about the wider world, he leads them well, and if they are as good as he makes them appear to be, they would be very useful to you, young master."

Calvus nodded, his gaze drifting towards Zaelyane — now Zaisha.

<Why did you use an alias for me?> Zaelyane asked using Mental Whisper, even though she didn’t care if he used an alias or not. Ď

Rion, who knew her thoughts well, answered, <I can’t take any risk. What if they already know of you? Elves are supposed to be a myth, you know.> Ď

No change appeared on their faces, and Rion continued while raising his hand towards Calvus, "Lastly, this is Calvus. The person who is going to make our journey smooth. Give him an appreciative look." Ď

All of them looked at Calvus with thankful expressions, and seeing that, Calvus let out an embarrassed chuckle and said while waving his hands, "Do not worry about it."

"It is a noble’s duty to make sure that no one is treated unjustly."

As he spoke, Rion translated his words to them.

Dora and Zaelyane smiled at him. On the other hand, Yuura simply nodded and inched behind Rion.

The knights and Jamie watched everything in silence.

Calvus spread his arms wide and stated, "The night is near; I believe it would be better for us to leave for Barleyhen."

"Indeed, we have already stayed for much longer than we had anticipated," Jamie chimed in.

Salis nodded, and all of them began to walk towards Calvus’s carriage.

The carriage was ornate with silver, the crest of the Barely house — an upside-down sword with two golden wheat stalks at its bottom was carved on its door and front, and it was big enough for six people to sit in.

However, before anyone could board the carriage, Salis walked over to Calvus and whispered in his ear, "Young master, I believe it would be better for me to accompany you."

Calvus nodded. Even if his actions were fueled by his desire for validation from his father, he wasn’t stupid... There was no way he was going to allow himself and Jamie to sit with four unknown people without anyone to protect them.

He slowed down, looked at Rion and said, "Rion, we only have enough room for three more to sit within the carriage..." His eyes shifted towards Yuura, and he added, "But do not worry, your friend can accompany the knights."

Rion flashed him a stupid grin and said, "I am glad that you are trying your best to help us."

Calvus smiled back, and all of them reached the carriage. 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

As discussed, Calvus, Jamie, Salis, Rion, Dora and Zaelyane boarded the carriage, and Yuura climbed onto the horse with one of the knights.

Calvus and his party sat at one side, and Rion and his party sat at the other.

As they sat down, Dora linked her fingers with Rion and rested her head on his shoulder.

Rion gave an embarrassed smile, and Calvus said, "It is fine... I know that she is unwell."

Dumbfounded, Rion mumbled with wide eyes, "How did you..."

A faint chuckle escaped Calvus, and he said, "You do not have to explicitly tell me everything."

Rion pressed his lips into a thin line, and Salis commanded, "Move forward!"

The horses let out a neigh and began to pull the carriage.

The sound of creaking wheels and hooves reached them, and Rion looked out with gleaming eyes.

Within moments, the carriage caught speed, and the world outside became slightly blurry.

The further they moved from the mountains, the less wilderness they got and now there were only a dozen trees in his vision.

These trees were shorter, thinner, and their leaves were much smaller.

The wide stretches of the uneven ground were full of wild grass, flowers, saplings and vines.

Rion watched everything with a smile, and seeing that Jamie whispered in Calvus’s ear, "It seems he is also one of those mother nature enthusiasts."

Their journey to the Barleyhen Town was silent as they didn’t have much in common to speak of, and according to what Rion had told them, the life he and his friends had been through didn’t have things that should be talked about... making it rather hard for Calvus to probe deeper.

Rion lowered his head and looked at Dora, who was poking her finger into his abdomen.

"What’s wrong?" He asked softly. Ď

She gave him a tired look and said, "I don’t like this..." Ď

He pulled her closer to himself and mumbled, "You’ll get the hang of it just like how Yuura got the hang of outsiders’ outfits." Ď

"Mhm..." she nodded and closed her eyes.

Seeing them, Calvus shifted his head closer to Jamie, who was watching everything with a faint smile, and asked, "Is this how all the lovers usually are?"

Jamie chuckled and said, "Most certainly not, love is no different than a sweet poison, young master... not everyone can handle it."

Calvus frowned and mumbled, "How hard can it even be?"

Jamie chuckled at his question and whispered, "You will understand once you find the one who matters the world to you."

Calvus nodded, still not understanding how hard it could be for a person to act sweet to another.

Rion could easily hear their whispers but decided to ignore them, and after about an hour, his lips curved upwards as he could see a green arrow floating about a kilometre away from him.

’Finally...’
