Chapter 104: 104 Talk in the Night.

Time blurred after Cain’s discussion with Selena. Luna’s word that stated he was freed from training for the day left his schedule unexpectedly open.

With no other choice, he was being invited to eat dinner at Winterfell house, which surprisingly blew his mind.

As expected from a wealthy household, his meal was none other than real food. A food with substance, shape, and taste. Most importantly, the warmth that entered his tongue down to his throat seeped into his soul, soothing the boy’s weary heart.

After all those gooey jelly, filled with artificial taste, kept entering his body. Today’s dinner was like a drop of an oasis that cleansed his mouth, reminding him again what it was to become a normal human.

And now, Cain was sitting on one of the balconies in the mansion. He leaned his back against the metal chair; the cold, hard texture made his back stiff. In front of him, a round table coated with metal became his companion.

He lifted his gaze to the black curtain of the night, stretched to the horizon. There was a crescent moon, smiling above him, accompanied by many tiny points of light that glittered like diamonds. They blinked as if mocking him, who sat alone in the presence of the universe.

However, despite the blatant provocation, the boy was deep in thought. After having time to catch his breath, a lot of things started to resurface in his mind, especially the appearance of the senior.

Initially, he only wanted to make that foxy senior pay the price for trying to mess with Louise. In addition, Cain couldn’t stomach the way that the crimson-haired senior looked down on him. So he gave him what he deserved, a humiliating loss against a junior.

Yet when he heard the purpose of their coming was to recruit another batch of students for help in the war. The boy slightly regretted the choice he made.

Because the seniors now knew the power his group held. There was a huge chance that Cain’s team would be chosen to go toward the eastern border, which was currently at war.

He was having no problem with any of that, for it could be a new challenge for Cain to grow. But things were different when his teammates were involved.

’Huff, what should I do?’

A gust of cold wind brushed his skin; the cool sensation made his fingertips grow numb. He looked down, witnessing his finger shivering. The boy clenched his fist, nails digging into his palm skin.

Suddenly, the sound of the creaking door made Cain shift his attention to the source. From the crack, a serene blue eyes peeked out, looking out before her expression broke into a warm smile.

"So you are here."

Luna stepped outside, and her exposed shoulders were draped by a thick coat that looked warm. But, it didn’t stop cold from invading her hand as she rubbed it together.

Cain was about to stand up, wanting to change locations. The girl waved her hands frantically.

"No, no, no, you can stay."

He furrowed his brows.

"No, I mean we should head back inside soon. It’s freezing outside."

The girl puffed her cheeks, blowing warm air onto her shivering palms.

"Huff, then, why are you here in the first place?"

Hearing her words, Cain shook his head and stepped out of his chair.

"Well, I was just thinking about something."

"About what?"

His steps halted, and the words lingered for a moment before he spoke.

"Nothing serious."

"Hmm, is that so?"

Luna dismissed the subject. Even though the boy was planning to leave, the silver-haired girl walked closer to the table. She pulled the unused chair and set it beside the chair Cain had used earlier.

She stared at the boy, prompting him to take a seat next to her. Cain looked toward the now-cold chair; a hesitant expression appeared on his face. But before he could think about something, his body was moving on its own and returned to his seat.

For some unknown reason, Cain was having a hard time refusing her.

The girl’s expression beamed. Her silver hair glittered, simmering with an ethereal glow under the moonlight. He stared at her face for several seconds until Luna glanced at him, making him avert his gaze, and he coughed awkwardly.

A silence descended around them. The two did nothing but stare at the sky above. Luna, who leaned on her seat, turned her attention, watching Cain’s expression from the side. A moment later, heat started to gather on her face. She clapped her hands to cover her burning cheeks, letting the cold cool down her thoughts.

If there was a story, then Luna was sure that her life was one of them.

The boy who saved her at that time came back to save her heart on the brink of collapse. Her mother’s disease was slowly gnawing at her emotions. Days by, she hoped her uncle would create a cure that could save her. But all of them failed, and almost buried hope deep into the ground.

As the situation turned for the better as her mother’s condition stabilized, she was hit with the sudden news that her mother was at death’s door. No, to be exact, isolation, which was worse than death.

At that time, when she was shopping in the mall with her friends, Luna was happy to resolve herself and followed Cain out toward the park because that was the moment that turned her life over.

Cain saved her mother along with her heart. The ice that trapped her heart for years thawed by his touch, making her grateful to him for the rest of her life.

’No, that’s not quite right.’

Luna shook her head, and as she was about to stare at Cain. Their eyes locked into each other, making her heart skip a beat. She saw her reflection in those black eyes of his, calm on the outside, yet flustered inside.

All those years spent becoming a ’Winter Lady’ proved helpful as she could apply it in a situation like this.

The boy tilted his head and was about to leave her sight. Luna racked her brain, searching for any subject to prolong his stay.

"C-Cain, do you remember that time?"

"Hm, what time?"

She was happy the boy turned his attention back to her. But Luna was screaming internally.

’From the many subjects, why must I choose this one.’

Not only did it make her seem desperate to be recognized, but also scared, what if the boy next to her was not the same person in her mind?

If that happened, what should she do?

However, what has already spilled from her mouth. Luna wouldn’t take it back; it was not her style to back down in front of a trial. She inhaled deeply, curling her fingers into fists tight over her thighs.

"Em, you know the one when we met at that alley when we were kids."

There was no going back. Luna swallowed hard to moisten her parched throat. A second passed in silence, two, then when it reached three, she gazed at his face only to flinch.

The boy’s expression was hardened. His black eyes, which always showed kindness, are now blank and detached from reality.

Luna held her breath; she could hear her beating chest pounding so hard it wanted to break her ribs. The girl looked down, unable to continue further. Several emotions began to swell in her chest: embarrassment at her wrong assumption, gratitude for saving her mother, and, most dominant, regret for hoping too much on the uncertain reunion.

"I... I can’t remember."

She perked her ears, hearing the words that came out of Cain’s mouth. The girl bit her quivering lips, trying to keep her calm act.

"...What do you mean?"

A moment of silence swirled around the two before Cain started to tell his story.

He spoke of his awakening, training harder than his talented peers, and being appointed captain of an elite squad. Cain’s first real mission outside the walls was a desperate battle against a monster horde, where he awakened a power to save his team, a power that demanded a price.

Of course, this was all a lie Cain made on the spot to give a reason for Luna to accept it.

However, Luna was oblivious as to what had transpired inside his thoughts. The girl lifted her face, looked toward Cain, and asked.

"And that price is your memories?"

Her face contorted in pain, and Luna felt her chest tighten to the point of pain after watching the boy nod.

"Yeah, but speaking of alley. I remember there was a time when I was being beaten down by adults after... what is it again? Hmm, If I’m not wrong, I was saving someone..."

Cain began to speak in barrages. His tone was nonchalant, trying to lighten the heavy mood between them. Yet Luna didn’t catch any of those as her attention was straight toward him.

He was unaware, but the word he said was already solid proof of their past connection.

Luna still recalled those days when she was separated from her parents while they were visiting the mall. She wandered through the building, to the outside, until she somehow reached a faraway place in a narrow and dark alley.

The damp atmosphere made her steps squeaky; the smell of tangy oil was still ingrained in her mind. And when adults were about to do something incomprehensible to her. Luckily, she was saved by Cain, which led her to run away from the place while Cain stayed behind getting beaten up by them.

Luna still remembered it because after running, she returned trying to save him, but was too scared when she saw how violent the adults were. So the girl ran, ran, until she was found by a local security guard who brought her to her parents.

The sound of fists meeting flesh followed her down the alley, a rhythm of violence she could never forget, crushing the girl’s fragile heart.

Realizing what she had done, after that incident, Luna showed less emotion toward strangers. Not because she was afraid, but because, as a punishment for her sin, she left that grey-haired boy alone.

The girl’s hand reached out to interlock their fingers together.

"That’s enough."

"Senior Luna?"

It took her everything not to let her voice tremble. Luna tightened the grip on their connected hands, then spoke.

"From now on, please don’t use that power ever again."

She cast a gaze at him. The boy was flustered, scratching his cheek as he answered halfheartedly.

"Well, I’ll try my best."

’He’s lying.’

After watching what Cain did, Luna was aware that the boy wouldn’t just obediently stop what he was doing, especially when he had a responsibility to her comrades as a leader.

Without a doubt, Cain would use that power again if his comrade or the people close to him were in danger. And that would reclaim his memories little by little until nothing was left, turning him into a vessel with no soul.

However, that’s fine, because if that was his choice. Then Luna would make her own choice and would protect him with the best she could to repay him.

’I will never let anything happen to you! This life is yours, so I will protect you from anything that harms you.’

Luna pressed her lips, trying her best to hold back tears that started to blur her vision. She took a shallow breath, thinking that if everything goes haywire, and Cain turned into nothing but a lifeless doll, if that time comes.

’Then, I guess, taking care of you in the same small house we shared together wouldn’t be too bad.’
