Chapter 113: Setting Out To The Western Continent [ 3 ]

"For starters, I’ve already said this plenty of times, but we can’t use Gifts without permission out in the open."

Sure, there were avenues where we could, but in general, using a Gift in a city was a big no-no.

"There are thousands of enforcers from the Church of Everdeen, and they’ll catch us and punish us if we use any Gifts."

Clementine nodded.

"That sounds fine so far. They’re very strict, but if this continent is prospering so well, they must be doing something right."

Haha.

True.

"Next up is curfew. After midnight, the streetlamps turn off, and if you’re seen outside, you’ll get arrested."

It was one of those more strict rules.

But there was a good reason for it.

And seeing Clementine’s curious expression, I decided to tell her.

"In the past, there used to be a lot of red light districts in the cities. Obviously, to get a lot of profit, they had to run their operations during the night."

"But it got to the point where nobles and higher-ups were being manipulated and killed in those red light districts."

I drew a few circles by tracing my finger on Clementine’s thigh.

"There were a few insider organizations that were so wealthy, their influence crippled this continent’s economy for nearly two decades."

It really was bad.

"Only after introducing the curfew and patrolling through the night did the economy slowly go back to normal."

And that’s that.

Clementine looked amused by my explanation, though her lack of questions made me think she was just zoned out.

Anyhow...

"Three more rules, which are important, but also very basic."

I raised a single finger.

"Nobles are very prideful, and the law established that whenever you see a noble, you must address them with the proper honorifics."

"But what if I don’t know that noble?" she asked.

A faint smile appeared on my face as I gave her a quick peck on the cheek.

"Most commoners are taught the crest of every noble house, but for those who don’t know a noble, they must tip their hats and bow slightly."

Her brows lowered slightly.

"It’s like announcing that you’re a country bumpkin..."

"Pfft... Yeah, that’s the point."

As I brushed her hair slightly, I continued:

"If you’re a commoner, you can’t wear any jewelry, ornaments, or any kind of hair combs."

So sadly, Clementine’s hairpin and necklace would have to be stashed away.

My outfit wasn’t that strange, but I did have a blue scarf that Clementine had gifted me some time ago.

That, sadly, is also not allowed.

"I see..."

She didn’t seem very happy about it.

I gave her another kiss and told her the final and most basic rule.

"They have their own currency, so we’ll have to exchange our gold and platinum when we arrive. If we try using it, they’ll label us as thieves or pirates."

Basically, it was a very strict, advanced continent, but even so, I was prepared, and so was Clementine.

So with that in mind, I proceeded to kick my feet up on the opposite seats and relax.

I slowly closed my eyes, and before long, I drifted off to sleep.

***

I woke up at Clementine’s touch and saw her staring at me with a serious look.

"We’ve stopped."

Glancing through the window, I saw the dark, endless ocean.

It seemed like I slept for the whole day.

But that’s not what’s important right now.

I stood up and left the passenger deck, then walked along the side of the ship as it rocked back and forth due to the powerful waves.

Clementine, on the other hand, went to the front of the ship from inside the passenger area.

When I began to descend down to the first floor, I lost sight of her.

Just then, I saw a pale blue light in the distance, and what followed was a thunderclap that hit a nearby island.

BOOOOOOM!

Yet in that small fraction of a second when the sky lit up, I spotted three ships coming from the direction of the thunder, as well as thousands of pigeons hovering ahead.

Ignoring the pigeons, I focused on the ships instead.

They weren’t Reyna’s ships.

At least that’s that.

I ignored that for now and entered the cabin where the old man was.

He sat with his feet up on the helm.

The fumes of a cigar blew through the holes in his straw hat as he eventually raised his head, meeting my gaze.

Since it seemed like he didn’t want to be the first one to speak, I’d do the honors.

"Couldn’t you have taken us a little closer to the Western continent?"

He shrugged.

"What’s the point? Mikael and Evangeline. A combined bounty of 300 platinum bars. You two have caught the interest of very important people."

Although he made it sound like some big revelation, I merely let out a sigh.

"That’s it? If it was just about the bounty, you should’ve brought more than three ships. Anyhow, since you’re not a slaver, at least you can die with your dignity intact."

As if sensing the impending danger, the old man suddenly opened his mouth wide.

Before I could even react, a pale white beam of light burst from the back of his throat and, like a powerful laser beam, hit me square on.

I hurtled straight through the captain’s cabin and rippled across the ocean until finally halting.

As I turned back toward the ship, I saw a large white pillar of energy soaring straight into the sky, alerting all the nearby pursuers.

Yet within just two seconds, the beam of light flickered away, and before long, I saw the headless corpse of the old man flying my way and landing in the ocean just in front of me.

Just then, I spotted Clementine’s figure inside the captain’s cabin, and she seemed furious.

She suddenly shot up into the sky, and with silver Soul Weapons circling around her, she hurled the old man’s head at the distant ships as though it were a cannonball.

A trail of silvery light lit up the night sky.

And at the same time as the distant thunder...

The old man’s head finally struck the ships.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
