At the foot of the mountain, villagers had caught two chickens and brought them up to the school, saying it was to provide the students with a better meal.

At first, the teachers were reluctant to accept them. After all, this was food the villagers relied on to survive. But the villagers said they wanted their children to leave this mountain, to escape this hellish place.

Their words stunned the teachers.

This place was so remote that even basic transportation was a problem. They were trapped in the mountains forever. But they had never imagined the villagers would refer to it as “hell”.

For a moment, none of the teachers knew what to say to comfort them.

The villagers, however, simply left the chickens behind and went back down the mountain.

Watching their tattered clothing and hunched backs disappear into the distance, the teachers felt a deep ache in their hearts.

If possible, they wished their students could have witnessed that moment, to understand just how precious the lives they now lived truly were.

The teachers made a decision: for as long as they were here, they would do everything they could to pass on their knowledge to the children.

Even if just one child could leave these mountains, it would be worth it.

But first, there was a more immediate problem to solve.

“Has anyone here ever... killed a chicken before?” The teachers looked around at each other in dismay, completely at a loss in the face of two live birds.

Usually, they bought prepared meat at the market—but that didn’t mean they knew how to butcher it themselves.

“Uh… I don’t think any of us know how to do it.”

“How about we just return them? I brought a bunch of instant noodles anyway. We can make do for today and talk to the village chief tomorrow about what to do.”

“Wait a second…”

A male student’s voice stopped them. All eyes turned to see HuMing casually lifting one of the chickens. He spoke slowly and calmly.

“I know how to slaughter a chicken. If you need help.”

His expression was neutral, and he didn’t seem to be joking in the slightest.

The teachers, however, twitched at the corners of their mouths. They were sure he was bluffing. A pampered rich kid like him, doing something like killing a chicken? Impossible. Not to mention, HuMing had a history of bragging just for show. Even if he’d changed a lot recently, who could say for sure if he was telling the truth?

What if he didn’t know how to do it and just ended up wasting the food?

“HuMing, maybe it’s best not to.”

“Yeah, it’s not like we desperately need the chickens. We’re not here on vacation, but we shouldn’t waste the villagers’ food either.”

HuMing didn’t argue.

He simply took the chicken and headed toward the kitchen. He wasn’t doing it for the others—he just wanted Han YunXi to have a proper meal. If they ate instant noodles every day, even he would feel guilty watching.

After tidying up her bedding, Han YunXi joined the other students in exploring the school grounds.

Even the classroom walls were made of tiles, and everyone feared they might collapse in a storm.

The materials on the desks were clearly quite old. According to the teachers, they were still using outdated textbooks—some of the knowledge was no longer accurate.

So this time, the visiting teachers had brought new curriculum materials.

Their goal was to give the children access to updated education. The teachers also planned to work closely with the local ones to raise the overall quality of instruction.

Han YunXi wandered around for quite some time, but there was still no sign of HuMing.

She looked around, and suddenly noticed a crowd—students and even a few teachers—gathered near the back kitchen.

A strange feeling welled up inside her.

Could he be over there?

When she finally saw what was happening inside the kitchen, she was stunned.

HuMing held a chicken in one hand and a kitchen knife in the other. Under everyone’s gaze, he swiftly brought the knife down and made a quick, clean cut across the chicken’s neck. Blood gushed out like a waterfall—gruesome and vivid.

A few students gasped in shock. But the teachers inside didn’t look particularly surprised.

There was already a fully cleaned and butchered chicken laid out on the table.

“HuMing actually knows how to butcher chickens? Wasn’t he the rich heir of the Han family? How could he possibly do this kind of dirty work?”

“Who knows? But I can tell you this—your eyes aren’t deceiving you. That is HuMing.”

Someone turned and happened to spot Han YunXi nearby. A female student ran up and looped arms with her, asking curiously:

“YunXi, did you know HuMing could kill chickens?”

“…No.” Han YunXi fell silent. She really had no idea he had such a skill.

Ever since he returned from the Gu family, HuMing had become harder and harder to understand. The distance between them only seemed to grow.

At dinner, the students and teachers all sat together.

The students discussed how they’d teach the children the next day. The teachers talked about lesson plans based on the children’s current progress and what materials would be needed.

Time passed quickly.

Once the students had cleaned up their dishes, they headed back to their lodgings.

But Han YunXi noticed that one of her roommates was missing.

She paused for a moment, then walked out of the building. She hadn’t gone far when she heard someone speaking in a low, flirtatious tone.

“HuMing… you know so many things… Will you teach me sometime…?”

The sickly-sweet voice made Han YunXi’s skin crawl. She’d never liked this girl. She always pretended to be a helpless sweetheart and flirted with tons of guys.

She had only been allowed to come on this trip because a student council member bent the rules for her.

She hadn’t caused any trouble along the way—until now.

Peeking her head around a corner, Han YunXi saw HuMing quietly standing before the girl, while the girl shamelessly leaned in closer to him.

“You might think I know a lot,” HuMing said, “but could you move? My sister’s here to find me.”

With that, he stepped around the girl and walked straight over to where Han YunXi stood at the corner.

Han YunXi was dumbfounded. She had no idea when or how HuMing had spotted her—she hadn’t even made a sound!

The girl stood frozen, then stormed off past the two of them with a glare full of resentment. She clearly blamed Han YunXi for ruining her plan.

“She doesn’t look too happy,” HuMing remarked, glancing after her curiously.

“You seriously don’t know why she’s upset?” Han YunXi asked with exasperation.

But before she could say more, HuMing pressed something wrapped in oil paper into her hand.
