"HuMing, did you bring long-sleeved clothes with you? It'll keep raining for a while—be careful not to catch a cold." Han YunXi frowned slightly. When she noticed HuMing's damp shoulders, she instinctively tried to tilt the umbrella toward him.

But the umbrella was in HuMing’s hand, so she couldn’t do anything about it.

More importantly, over the next two weeks, HuMing would have to live in these conditions. If he wasn’t prepared, it could turn into a real problem.

"I did, I did. I just forgot to bring an umbrella, that’s all." He raised his head to look at the sky.

After the downpour, the weather was finally starting to calm.

The dark clouds looked as though someone had gently brushed them aside with their hand, allowing sunlight to peek through from behind.

Up ahead, one of the teachers glanced at the rain, then signaled for everyone to keep moving.

If they lingered any longer, they might get caught in another downpour.

The road, already muddy, had become even harder to walk after the rain.

Shoes sank easily into the softened earth.

Many people began to grumble about how terrible the path was, but Han YunXi didn’t react much. Compared to the others, she was wearing an old pair of flat shoes that had clearly been broken in over a long time.

The group pressed forward, and finally, along the way, they saw someone.

The man was wearing a straw raincoat, and when he spotted the students and teachers, he broke into a smile and said cheerfully:

"Ah, finally found you! The village chief was worried the rain would make you lose your way, so he sent me to come look!"

"The roads outside are too rough—cars can't get in. We've walked a long way just to get here!" one of the teachers muttered, unable to hold back the frustration. No one had expected things to get this difficult before they’d even started.

The man chuckled good-naturedly.

"Yeah, we understand. But the village is poor, and the higher-ups don’t want to give us money to fix the roads. That’s why not many people are willing to come here." His tone was tinged with helplessness, making it easy to feel sympathy for him.

Everyone knew this wasn’t something easily fixed.

So when he spoke, it was easy to empathize.

"Anyway, let’s not dwell on that. Come on, let’s get into the village. It might rain again soon—we don’t want the kids catching a chill."

The man led the way, and the others followed behind him.

HuMing dragged a suitcase with one hand and held the umbrella with the other, his eyes constantly scanning the man from behind.

After another ten or so minutes of trudging, they finally arrived at their destination.

Just as expected, the environment was harsh—and things inside weren’t much better.

Along the way, they saw many children dressed in plain clothes, staring at them with curious eyes. Some of the children were huddled in corners, whispering about who-knows-what.

Han YunXi glanced around. Many of the homes had chicken coops and pigpens right at their front doors. The air was filled with a pungent smell.

Several people wrinkled their noses and tried to avoid the stench.

After the rain, the odor became even more overpowering, to the point of being hard to bear.

It was difficult to imagine living here for two weeks.

"My god, this place is so poor. If I have to stay here for two weeks, who knows what I’ll even look like by the time I get home."

"I'm already starting to regret coming. If I had the choice again, I wouldn’t take the credits, no matter what."

Many of the students were grumbling now, and even the teachers weren’t exempt.

After all, the living conditions here were far from what city folk were used to. It was like one of those shows on TV where pampered kids had to survive in the countryside—though those shows eventually lost their authenticity, the early episodes were still brutally real.

Kids used to soft beds and air conditioning—how could they possibly sleep well here?

Someone turned to look at HuMing and Han YunXi, only to find that neither of their expressions had changed much.

It was as if they were already used to scenes like this.

"This place is even worse than I imagined. Did the school already assign us places to stay?"

"They said we could stay at the school. Compared to the rest of the village, it’s relatively better. Some of the villagers are even willing to take us in, so accommodations shouldn’t be an issue."

The group carefully made their way past weeds and loose stones until they finally arrived at the school at the foot of the mountain.

The walls were peeling. The rooftop was patched together with mismatched bricks. The buildings were arranged in crude square blocks, and in the middle was a large open space of compacted dirt serving as a playground. There was even a basketball hoop—crudely welded from rusted iron pipes.

"Hard to believe places like this still exist in our country..." Even though Han YunXi had mentally prepared herself, she couldn’t help but be shocked when she saw the place she’d be staying in.

A teacher up ahead overheard her and responded with a sigh.

"Don’t let the broken-down buildings fool you. The place we’re staying is behind those structures. The villagers heard teachers were coming to help, so they threw together some temporary housing for us. If they hadn’t, I don’t think we could have adjusted to living in the actual classrooms."

"We crossed a mountain just to get here. And those kids? They climb that same mountain every day just to come to school. Just thinking about it makes me feel exhausted."

Everyone fell silent after hearing that.

Meanwhile, HuMing was already carrying Han YunXi’s suitcase toward the lodging area.

Thankfully, the temporary housing set up by the villagers was fairly clean. The room looked recently swept and tidied—someone had clearly prepared it in advance.

HuMing placed Han YunXi’s suitcase on one of the beds and said:

"Go ahead and unpack. I’m going with the teachers to check out the school’s layout."

"...HuMing, you’re staying here too?"

"What else? You saw what it’s like down the mountain. This isn’t the kind of place where we can afford to be picky." He gave her a quick head pat, then turned and walked out.

Han YunXi sat down on her bed, momentarily dazed.

"HuMing, life in Jingdu has been treating you well, right? I heard you ranked first at JingDu II High School?"

"Just got lucky."

"Ah, if only you’d stayed at our school. I think Teacher Hu would’ve really liked you," one of the teachers said with a soft laugh, a hint of implication behind the words.

But HuMing didn’t pay it much mind. What he cared more about was whether this school was safe.

If someone did want to launch an attack—where would be the easiest place to strike?
