Transmigrated as Cannon Fodder — I Rise to Female Lead Through Hard Work-Chapter 203: Liao Yongzhong
As August arrived, the double harvest was about to end, and the days were getting hotter. In this era without pollution, the sun was scorching, yet not unbearable.
But for Yi Roujing, who had enjoyed air conditioning in later years, she still felt sweaty every day. While outside was slightly more comfortable than in later years, indoors was significantly different.
The best-selling item at the Department Store recently was electric fans, in short supply.
Liu Molin had been working at the Department Store in Huaixi County for a week now, wearing a short-sleeved white shirt, black pants, and fashionable sandals, standing behind the appliance counter with a fan blowing behind her. She happily fanned herself with a bamboo fan, feeling absolutely no discomfort from the summer heat, delighted inside.
Except during the New Year, the Department Store remained open, whether on weekends or holidays. Liu Molin could rest for four days a month, though her rest days were random.
Of course, what she cared most about was the wage: fourteen yuan a month along with some vouchers. Although less than full-time workers, Liu Molin believed she would eventually become a full-time employee.
Moreover, the biggest advantage of working at the Department Store was the ability to buy slightly flawed household items at the lowest price. Liu Molin was clever; she bought these and secretly sold them to others, making some profit. Although she’d only been working for a week, she had already earned fifty cents from this.
This was because she was new, and the good items weren’t available for her to buy yet. Once she’s been there longer, earning a few more yuan a month won’t be a problem.
The rent in the county town wasn’t very expensive either; a room only cost two yuan a month, which she could easily afford.
Because of Liu Molin’s employment, her status at home had surpassed everyone else. Both Liu Guangmao and Lv Amei had to watch her mood. Her younger sister, Liu Moli, had been trying to please her lately because Liu Moli also wanted to come to the county town.
Liu Mohe went back to Wan Tang Production Team to get proof for school purposes, accompanied by Liu Moli. Of course, the conversation was filled with her inquiries about Liu Molin’s job.
Liu Mohe thought it over and didn’t conceal it. If her second sister could also receive favor, she could gain more benefits.
The schools in the county town were now on summer break, but Liao Yongzhong knew many people. Privately, he introduced the principal of a middle school, allowing Liu Mohe to meet him and submit her documents, ready to enroll directly when school started in autumn.
Because of the accompaniment, Liu Moli got acquainted with Liao Yongzhong.
Liao Yongzhong had a proper appearance. Though not young, he avoided labor and sun exposure, appearing much younger than his peers, and possessing a unique aura due to his position, which attracted Liu Moli’s gaze and made her shyly lower her head.
Throughout, Liao Yongzhong remained proper towards Liu Moli, while showing a warm familiarity to Liu Mohe, treating her like his own daughter, making Liu Moli envious.
Being a gracious host, Liao Yongzhong invited the sisters to dine at a state-run restaurant.
Yi Roujing had an ice pop in hand, salty flavor, exceptionally refreshing and thirst-quenching. Having worked the night shift last night, she slept until now. As Ding Ancheng had a meeting this afternoon, she had to eat alone at the state-run restaurant. Walking in, she saw it was fully packed, causing her to immediately feel a surge of annoyance due to the heat.
Unable to occupy an entire table, Yi Roujing could only share one. The only available seat was near the corner, shaded but occupied by the Liu Family Sisters and an unknown middle-aged man.
"Oh, who is this, dining alone today?" Liu Moli, facing Yi Roujing’s seat, immediately noticed her with the ice pop, her eyes filled with sarcasm.
"Sir, do you mind if I share the table?" Yi Roujing asked the middle-aged man.
"Roujing," Liu Mohe glanced over and greeted Yi Roujing with a smile, though her eyes remained cold.
"Please have a seat. It’s a place for the people," Liao Yongzhong commented kindly.
Liao Yongzhong’s words silenced Liu Moli, fearing to offend him. She hoped to find employment through him.
Dining alone, Yi Roujing ordered a bowl of spare rib noodles with an egg, a few green vegetables, and sprinkled with scallions, aromatic.
Yi Roujing wasn’t in a rush to eat, focusing first on her ice pop.
At the square table were three dishes and a soup: braised pork, tomato scrambled eggs, stir-fried sweet potato leaves, accompanied by a winter melon minced meat soup, a decent selection.
Yi Roujing wasn’t sure who the man was, though he appeared to have a leadership demeanor, without resembling a relative of theirs. However, Yi Roujing wasn’t one to be nosy, especially about trivial matters, so after finishing the ice pop, she started eating her noodles.
"Not sure if your third brother found someone yet?" Liu Moli couldn’t hold back, seeing Yi Roujing eating delightfully, she blurted.
"Oh yes, I forgot to mention, my eldest sister now works at the Department Store, also living on commodity grains, glad she didn’t find your third brother." Liu Moli boasted.
Yi Roujing remained calm and unaffected. "Congratulations, they just weren’t meant to be. I hope your eldest sister finds a great match in the future."
Liu Moli felt like she’d punched a pillow, frustrated, glaring fiercely at Yi Roujing.
Liao Yongzhong slightly furrowed his brows, spotted by Liu Mohe who discreetly tugged at Liu Moli’s sleeve, finally quieting her.
"Roujing, we’re leaving now." After finishing their meal, the trio prepared to go, Liu Mohe politely bidding farewell to Yi Roujing.
Yi Roujing smiled and waved, feeling a little poignant. It seemed the young girl hadn’t followed her advice before.
"Oh, Roujing, I’m coming to study in the county town this fall." Liu Mohe announced cheerfully.
Yi Roujing raised her eyebrows; studying was good, something she had suggested before to Liu Mohe. Yet, Liu Mohe’s expression didn’t seem about an eagerness for learning, but had a flaunting vibe. Yi Roujing chose not to reveal this, offering a few perfunctory words, watching the trio leave.
Seeing Liao Yongzhong again was at the hospital; he was accompanying someone with a badly injured leg, desperately needing surgery.
Yi Roujing then learned the man was the Director of the Gomei Committee, and the person brought in was a result of their tutelage. It turned out to be Liao Shiqi’s father, indeed displeasing.
"I didn’t expect this comrade to be a nurse in the operating room," Liao Yongzhong was somewhat surprised to see Yi Roujing again, recognizing her instantly, as someone like Yi Roujing was unforgettable at a glance.
"I didn’t expect you to be Director Liao either," Yi Roujing replied calmly.
"Roujing, you know Director Liao?" Fan Yuanrong was somewhat surprised.
"Not quite, just with one encounter. Director Liao is generous-hearted, willingly providing convenience to ordinary people like us." Yi Roujing could only say something so insincere.
