Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 45: A Cornered Rabbit Will Bite
Samantha Warren’s words were crystal clear to Vera Yves.
She adjusted her hair and said calmly, "Winston Valentine, you can leave if you want, but I haven’t found anything yet. It’s impossible for me to go back with you now."
"I’ll take you back to the hotel now; if you wish to come, I’ll send someone to accompany you tomorrow," Winston Valentine said in a tone that left no room for refusal. "Come with me now!"
Why should Cecilia Vaughn’s disappearance disrupt her plans?
Vera Yves also stood her ground, "I’m not leaving!"
Winston Valentine grabbed her wrist.
In her urgency, Vera Yves bit his hand; Winston winced in pain but showed no intentions of letting go.
It wasn’t until she tasted blood that Vera released her grip. "Winston, you’re worried about Cecilia Vaughn going missing, but I’m not!"
"Vera!"
Vera refused to back down, and the atmosphere remained tense.
Winston Valentin moved forward, intending to pick her up, but Vera stepped back, her attitude cold, "Linda Young will be here soon, and I’ll leave with her before dark!"
Winston looked at her stubborn demeanor and slowly released his grip, "Have it your way!"
"Bang!" He slammed the door shut.
Vera wiped her lip corner. What was she expecting? In his eyes, she and Cecilia Vaughn were always a single-choice question.
Vera lost her sleepiness and left the room.
Soon, Simon Warren came to find her, "Vera, why didn’t you leave with President Valentine?"
Vera replied calmly, "He had some urgent matters and said he’d come back to pick me up later."
Simon Warren smiled, "I thought you two had a quarrel."
"No, Brother, aren’t you busy this afternoon?"
"Master’s rules: consultations and acupuncture must be done before noon," Simon Warren glanced at Vera again. "Besides, it’s rare for you to come, no matter how busy I am, I must entertain you well."
Outside the clinic, Winston Valentine called Walter Lowell to track Linda Young’s whereabouts and help book a return ticket.
He sat in the car until Walter Lowell’s call confirmed Linda Young had arrived in Corvid, then he started the car and left the clinic.
Simon Warren walked around the clinic with Vera, "You grew up learning many skills by Master’s side, why didn’t you continue to open a clinic?"
"I got married soon after graduation. My husband’s family doesn’t like me making appearances," Vera found a plausible excuse.
Simon Warren sighed, "What a pity."
He touched the teacup, seemingly casually asking, "So the Yves Family’s secret prescription left by Master, didn’t it get lost?"
Vera chuckled, "Brother, outsiders spread nonsense; how could you believe such baseless things after being by Grandpa’s side for so many years? Isn’t Grandpa always saying, ’Different prescription for everyone, treat according to diagnosis’?"
Simon Warren nodded quickly, "Look at me, getting older and mind’s failing."
Seeing the sky darken outside, Simon Warren checked his watch, "President Valentine has been out for about two hours; why hasn’t he returned?"
"I’ll give him a call."
Vera stepped out of the room and tried calling Linda Young, but the call went unanswered.
Someone walked into the room and whispered a few words to Simon Warren.
Simon Warren glanced at Vera again. Winston Valentine had clearly left Corvid, so why did she say he’d return? As a wealthy wife in Imperia, why did she come here to find him?
Seeing Vera hang up, Simon Warren approached her, "Vera, I forgot to ask you earlier, who told you I was here?"
"Someone I know, his family is in the medicinal trade."
"Isn’t it Luke Shaw, the son of Wellspring Pharmaceuticals’ owner?"
Vera was a bit surprised; she only mentioned the medicinal business, yet Simon Warren thought of Luke Shaw. It seemed the two had quite a close relationship.
Simon Warren chuckled again, "Vera, it’s late, I’ll have someone prepare dinner, and we’ll go for a cup of tea."
Vera reached out to Linda Young on WeChat, also sharing her location.
Alcott Airport.
Winston sat in the VIP lounge, looking at the bite mark on his hand, with thoughts filled with Vera’s stubborn face refusing to leave with him.
She must have been furious; her strength wasn’t small, and the wound had already scabbed.
A rabbit indeed bites when cornered; and damn, that hurt!
The phone rang.
An unfamiliar number, yet few knew his private number.
Winston answered the call.
Linda Young sounded relieved, "Glad your phone is reachable; I’ve tried calling Vera several times, but she’s not answering. Are you two together?"
Winston griped the phone tighter, "Didn’t you go to pick her up?"
"What do you mean? Are you not with Vera?" Linda blew up, "You were still with Vera at noon!"
Winston walked out of the lounge, an aggressive tone, "I’d like to ask why you aren’t with her!"
Linda was stunned by his aura, "The route was hard to find; the car broke down midway. What could I do? My phone ran out of power! It took forever to charge it, and now I can’t reach Vera."
"Useless!"
"Winston, you’re her husband; how dare you call me useless when you’re not there with her?" Linda raged, just about to continue ranting, but Winston had already cut the call.
He had just left the lounge when the phone rang again. Checking the caller ID, he frowned and answered.
"Winston, what to do? I’ve had people search the hospital and all of Cecilia’s frequent spots, but still no sign of her!" Samantha Warren’s teary voice choked. "It’s dark out, do you think Cecilia could be having dark thoughts?"
Winston hesitated for a moment, "I’ll arrange people to go over immediately."
Samantha Warren got anxious hearing this, "Winston, what do you mean? Cecilia’s missing, aren’t you worried? Her current state is all because of you! Are you going to let it be?"
"Rest assured, I won’t ignore Cecilia."
...
When Vera woke up, it was pitch black, the sound of insects, she moved and found her hands and feet were tied.
The air was cold, there was wind, she seemed to be on a mountain.
Entering the living room, Simon Warren handed her a cup of tea again, suggesting that the tea was problematic.
Yet she puzzled why Simon Warren bound her.
"You’re awake." Simon Warren sat across Vera on an old tree stump, lighting a cigarette, only a hint of red visible in the dark. "You say I’ve hidden in this place; why for you to insist on finding me?"
"So my grandfather’s matters indeed relate to you?"
Simon Warren sneered, "How is it related to me? Blame your grandfather for his inflexibility! Who can eat if they follow his theory? Does he think everyone learns medicine for love? I’m damned serious about learning real skills, making big money! Whoever blocks my way must die!"
Vera discreetly backed away.
Simon Warren took a deep drag, harshly extinguishing the butt on the ground, "Know why I opened a clinic here backed by this mountain? There’s plenty of precious herbs and not few restless souls who have fallen here!"
Vera discovered this place, proving she was suspicious of past events. If she dug deeper... he would snuff it out in its cradle.
Vera struggled to stay composed, "You should have realized Winston Valentine’s identity; if you kill me, he won’t spare you!"
