Chapter 46: Chapter 46: Why Did You Come Back?

Simon Warren laughed mockingly, "If he really cared about you, would he leave you alone at my clinic? Besides, everyone in Imperia knows he doesn’t take you as his wife seriously. If you were dead, he might even thank me."

How could Simon Warren know so much about affairs in Imperia from a place like this?

"If he doesn’t care about me, how could he have come here with me?"

Simon Warren said nonchalantly, "He might have already returned to Imperia by now. Besides, up here in the mountains, I have a hundred excuses to say you accidentally fell off the mountain. Once you’re dead, no one will remember The Yves Clinic anymore."

Then he can rest easy.

Seeing Simon Warren approaching, Vera Yves hurriedly said, "Don’t you want The Yves Family’s secret formula? I can give it to you!"

Simon Warren paused in his steps. He indeed wanted the formula, as that was the most valuable thing, "Didn’t you say there was no formula?"

Vera Yves calmly said, "Of course, we say there’s no formula to the outside. My grandfather said the formula is only to be passed within The Yves Family!"

"I knew it! I suspected all along the old man was hiding something!"

Vera Yves felt chilled. Her grandfather was always generous in teaching everyone who learned medicine from him, though unfortunately not everyone had the aptitude to succeed.

"Where is it?"

"You must have searched the clinic cabinets back then and didn’t find it, right?" Vera Yves confidently stated, "That’s because the formula is hidden in a very secret place that only I know now."

"Where exactly is it?"

Vera Yves extended her foot, "This rope is too tight, I’m really uncomfortable. Can you untie it for me first?"

Simon Warren pressed the item on his waist, "I’m warning you, don’t play tricks with me!"

"In this forest, I don’t know the way. What tricks could I play? I just want to be a bit more comfortable."

Simon Warren hesitated for a moment, then helped her untie the rope on her foot. Almost instantly, Vera Yves gathered her strength and slammed into Simon Warren.

Simon Warren was only guarding against her lower body and didn’t expect her whole body to ram into him, causing him to fall to the ground.

Vera Yves darted madly forward without caring about anything.

"Bang!"

In the silent mountains, the gunshot was deafening.

Vera Yves trembled with fear, as she dashed forward madly. She had often gone up the mountain to gather herbs with her grandfather in her childhood, so she was somewhat familiar with the terrain here.

Whereas Simon Warren, who climbs the mountain countless times each year, knows the terrain of this mountain like the back of his hand and even knows exactly where Vera Yves might hide.

With a gun in his hand, like a cat pursuing a mouse, he followed behind her. If he wanted to create the illusion of her accidentally falling off the mountain, there couldn’t be any gunshot wounds on her body.

Vera Yves hid behind the bushes, the mountain forest was so silent it seemed she could hear her heart racing.

Listening to the footsteps getting closer, she held her breath.

The footsteps gradually receded, and Vera Yves breathed a sigh of relief. The next moment, her lips were covered, and she widened her eyes in fear, but Winston Valentine’s voice floated to her ears, "Don’t be afraid, it’s me."

Vera Yves instantly felt all her strength drain away, as Winston Valentine held her in his arms, his slightly trembling hands betraying his current worry.

Winston Valentine helped her untie the ropes on her hands. The mountain road was hard to walk. He heard the gunshot while holding a flashlight and thus managed to find her. Simon Warren, once realizing Vera Yves’s absence ahead, would undoubtedly turn back.

They are not familiar with the terrain here, and Simon Warren has a gun.

He had rushed over with only a wrench, standing no chance.

Winston Valentine placed the flashlight in her palm, "I’ll lead him away in a while. You take the flashlight down the mountain. Walter Lowell is on his way with people, you should be able to meet him going downhill."

Vera Yves shook her head, "We leave together!"

Winston Valentine lowered his voice further, "Don’t be foolish, if we both try to leave, neither of us will make it."

"Why did you come back?"

He had gone to find Cecilia Vaughn, hadn’t he? Why did he appear beside her when she was most helpless?

"That’s not important."

Vera Yves stubbornly asked, "Why did you come back?"

Perceiving the footsteps turning back again, Winston Valentine suddenly lowered his head, kissed her deeply on the lips, then quickly separated, "Remember, no matter what sound you hear, don’t turn back."

Winston Valentine’s figure swiftly melted into the darkness, Simon Warren caught the commotion and indeed hurriedly chased after him.

The footsteps disappeared, the warmth on her lips still lingered.

Vera Yves had no other choice but to illuminate the road ahead with the flashlight, stumbling as she went, but fortunately found a path down the mountain quickly.

"Bang!"

A gunshot startled the birds on the trees.

Vera Yves’s legs felt weak, she forced herself not to dwell on it.

However, in her mind, images of Winston Valentine lying in a pool of blood kept flashing.

"Bang!"

Another gunshot, seemingly right alongside her ear.

The tension in Vera Yves’s heart snapped; if it wasn’t for saving her, he wouldn’t have come back.

She can’t just leave!

Vera Yves wiped away tears from her cheeks, all the while leaving marks as she walked back, praying Walter Lowell arrives quickly with his team and finds them.

Now it seems, the matters from her grandfather’s time not only involved Simon Warren, but likely others too, even hinting at a larger secret behind them. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

Vera Yves turned off the flashlight, listening intently to the surrounding noises.

"You better think carefully, can you afford the price of killing me?"

Simon Warren hadn’t expected Winston Valentine to come; was the information given by the other party wrong?

This disrupted his plan. He wouldn’t be able to offend The Valentine Family, but letting Winston Valentine go means death for him too!

Winston Valentine clutched his bleeding arm, three meters ahead stood Simon Warren with a gun, behind him was a steep slope, the depth of which he couldn’t determine.

"Everyone says President Valentine doesn’t care about his wife, seems the rumors aren’t trustworthy." Simon Warren raised the gun, "Since you and she are so deeply affectionate, I’ll kill you first, and then send her down to join you!"

"Thud!"

A muffled sound.

As Simon Warren was about to pull the trigger, a stone struck his head, causing him to fall straight down.

Vera Yves, her hand trembling, kicked him again and found him motionless, suddenly feeling drained of all her strength.

Winston Valentine quickly came over, supporting her falling body, Vera Yves clutched his arm tightly, voice trembling, "Winston Valentine, I killed someone!"

Winston Valentine steadied her, took the gun from Simon Warren’s hand, checked his breathing, then returned to Vera Yves’s side, "He’s just passed out, not dead yet."

Vera Yves breathed a sigh of relief, recalling the two gunshots she heard, she instinctively felt his body, and touched wetness, "You’re hurt!"

Vera Yves forced herself to calm down, she turned on the flashlight, illuminating his wound, "I’ll help you stop the bleeding first."

Winston Valentine held her still trembling hand, "No rush, this little blood loss won’t kill me."

"Are there any other injuries?"

"No."

Winston Valentine gripped her hand tightly, "Didn’t I tell you to go? Why did you come back?"
