Together Apart: Her White Moonlight Has Returned Too-Chapter 37: I Did Give Him an Invitation
"What? Have I grown three heads and six arms?"
Zoe Monroe touched her chin, "In a way, I think you resemble my mom now."
Vera Yves looked helpless, "That doesn’t sound like a compliment."
Zoe explained, "I mean in terms of feeling, my mom is always at ease at social gatherings like you! But I remember you used to hate attending parties, hate dealing with people!"
"Did I?" Vera was a bit dazed; in fact, she rarely thought about the past since marrying Winston Valentine three years ago.
Another person came to greet Vera, and Vera smiled while toasting.
Zoe added by her ear, "See, see, that’s exactly how my mom smiles!"
Vera found herself torn between laughing and crying.
Cecilia Vaughn’s gaze swept over Vera, a fierce light in her watery eyes.
Samantha Warren approached her, "Whoever you fancy, let Winston help you investigate first, make sure before talking about marriage, don’t end up like Luke Shaw."
A look of resentment flashed in Cecilia’s eyes, "Mom, do you really think I want to get married?"
Samantha knew her thoughts well, "It’s impossible for you to marry Winston with your status, besides, he’s already married!"
"Marriage can end in divorce! Why can’t my status allow me to marry him?" Cecilia clenched her hands, "People make things happen!"
In all of Imperia, which man could compare to Winston Valentine? If Cecilia Vaughn were to marry, it would be to the best!
"The old lady wouldn’t agree!"
Cecilia looked at Vera mockingly, "Everything must be done step by step."
She needed to deal with Vera first!
A text notification sounded, Cecilia saw a message from Luke Shaw and headed towards the lounge area.
Vera greeted a few acquaintances with Winston Valentine, someone offered a toast to Winston, and Vera smiled, intercepting it for him.
Winston glanced at her slightly flushed cheeks, "I’m not so weak that I need a woman to drink for me."
Vera whispered, "Your wound hasn’t healed; you can’t drink."
The hand Winston had on her waist involuntarily tightened, "Are you worried about me?"
Vera turned to meet his dark eyes, her tone cold, "Just occupational habit, try to understand."
Winston released his grip, another person came to greet them, and as Vera tried to drink on his behalf again, he directly pushed her behind him.
Seeing him down two glasses of champagne in succession, Vera couldn’t help but say, "Drinking too much can cause your skin vessels to dilate intensely..."
Winston interrupted her coldly, "That’s still better than dealing with a drunkard."
Vera shut her mouth; doing this for the woman he loved to choose a future husband, feeling uncomfortable inside, she had to serve as an excuse.
They were not the main characters of tonight’s banquet, and Vera wanted to leave early. Zoe, having been bored long ago, was happy to link arms with her as they walked out, "Vivi, let’s go sing!"
Before Vera could say anything, a force pulled her away from Zoe’s side, taking her toward the exit of the banquet hall.
"Hey, where are you taking Vivi?"
Winston didn’t pause his steps, "Home."
Vera had to turn back to wave goodbye to Zoe.
Zoe stomped her feet in frustration.
Winston didn’t release her until they were outside the banquet hall, coolly saying, "Stay away from her in the future."
Vera massaged her wrist, "Zoe’s my childhood friend, I can’t stay away from her."
"Childhood friend?" Winston mocked, "Mrs. Valentine sure has a lot of childhood friends."
He strode away, and Vera reluctantly followed.
They entered the elevator one after the other, just before the doors closed, Samantha hurried over, "Winston, Cecilia is missing!"
Winston’s eyes darkened, quickly exiting the elevator, with Vera following.
"How did Cecelia go missing?"
Samantha was on the verge of tears, "We were just drinking together when suddenly Luke Shaw appeared out of nowhere, Cecilia didn’t want to attract attention, so she went to the lounge with him, but when I went to find her, she was gone, and her phone is off!"
Winston urgently instructed the bodyguards to check the surveillance footage.
His expression turned grim, "Why was Luke Shaw here?"
Upon hearing this, Samantha cast a malevolent glance at Vera, suddenly stepping forward to give her a hard push, "Why are you so vicious? Once wasn’t enough for Cecilia, you want to harm her again! Will you only be satisfied if you ruin her completely?"
Vera, in her high heels, staggered a couple of steps from the push, her elbow hitting the wall with searing pain.
Winston didn’t manage to block Samantha in time; he steadied Vera, and after ensuring her balance, he said to Samantha in a cold tone, "The priority right now is to find Cecilia."
Zoe, from a distance, saw Vera being pushed and immediately rushed over, placing her hands on her hips, looking at Samantha disapprovingly, "Why did you push Vivi?"
"This woman with a heart of a snake and scorpion! She’s harmed my daughter!" Samantha wailed, "Cecilia is my only daughter, if anything happens to her, how could I go on living!"
"Do you have any proof? You can’t just make baseless accusations!"
"Luke Shaw said it was Vera who let him in! He even said Vera wanted him to reconcile with Cecilia! If Cecilia weren’t doing it for Vera’s sake, why would she deal with Luke Shaw? Isn’t that evidence!"
Zoe snorted, "What sort of evidence is that?"
Hearing this, Winston released Vera’s arm, loosening his Windsor knot, with an unreadable expression, "Is what she said true?"
Vera met his gaze, her face slightly pale, "I did give him an invitation, but I..."
"Why did you give him an invitation?" Winston gritted his teeth as he grabbed her wrist, "Who gave you the right?"
"This is The Valentine Family’s banquet hall; security is everywhere. I thought it was safe."
On The Valentine Family’s turf, no matter how bold Luke Shaw might be, what could he possibly do?
"What a ’you thought...’" Winston flung her hand away.
Zoe quickly steadied Vera, glancing at Winston with dissatisfaction, "What, is giving someone an invitation a crime?"
A few minutes later, Walter Lowell hurried over, whispered a few words in Winston’s ear, and Winston’s face darkened bit by bit, his gaze sweeping over Vera, icy and piercing.
Zoe pulled Vera behind her protectively, "What is that look for? Vera is your wife, not your enemy!"
Winston headed toward the elevator, with Walter quickly pressing the elevator button for him.
The group followed inside.
Outside the room, Walter respectfully said, "President Valentine, the hotel front desk has been notified, someone will bring a room card soon..."
Before Walter finished speaking.
With a "bang!", Winston had already kicked open the door.
The faint sound of a woman crying came from inside the room.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Winston walked in.
Cecilia Vaughn’s clothes were disheveled, her forehead bruised, blood at the corner of her mouth, curled up in the corner holding a broken vase tight, blood smeared over it, "Don’t touch me!"
Seeing Cecilia like this, Samantha immediately cried out, "My Cecilia!"
Luke Shaw sat on the bed, clutching his forehead, with blood seeping through his fingers.
Winston took off his jacket, draping it over Cecilia’s shoulders, "Cecilia, it’s okay now."
He carefully reached for the vase, and Cecilia recoiled, finally realizing her situation, she then flung herself into his arms, trembling, "Winston, I knew you would come to save me!"
