Chapter 235: Chapter 235: Witch Doctor

Hunt had wanted to say something more to Lu Xiao, but the moment she placed her hand on his forehead, he fell back into a deep sleep.

Shield, standing to the side, took this in stride.

Lu Xiao withdrew her hand. "Don’t disturb him. Let him rest. The next treatment will be in three days. Once he fully recovers his human form, you don’t need to restrain him anymore. If you’re still worried, you can let him move around in this small area, but don’t keep him cooped up. Let him do what he wants. It will be good for him to release his pent-up emotions."

After hearing Lu Xiao’s instructions, Shield nodded in agreement.

He had witnessed the entire process of Lu Xiao treating Hunt with his own eyes and had watched him recover little by little. He would take every word she said to heart.

With her instructions given, Lu Xiao prepared to head back. Her work for the day was done.

Just as she was about to leave, however, Shield suddenly spoke up. "Lady Lu Xiao, the Chieftain said that if you have a moment after treating Hunt, she would like you to pay her a visit. She has something to discuss with you."

Hearing this, Lu Xiao wasn’t sure what the Chieftain could possibly want, but since the old Chieftain had specifically sent Shield with the message, it was clear she wasn’t meant to refuse.

They still didn’t know how long they would be living in the Canghe Tribe, so it was essential to stay on the old Chieftain’s good side.

Lu Xiao didn’t refuse. She nodded. "Then I’ll head over now."

"Let Mao accompany you," Shield said, then called out to Mao, "Are you done yet?"

The unspoken question was clear: ’Are you done crying?’

Mao ran back, his eyes still red but his emotions clearly settled. "I’m fine now. Lady Lu Xiao, are you heading back?"

"No. Escort Lady Lu Xiao to the Chieftain’s hut."

Mao’s eyes widened at Shield’s words. "Why does the Chieftain want to see Lady Lu Xiao?"

"What business the Chieftain has with Lady Lu Xiao is not for you to ask. Now, go."

With that, he gave Mao a light pat on the head. It might have looked stern, but the gesture was gentle.

Lu Xiao could tell they had a close relationship.

On the way, Lu Xiao asked, "Did you all grow up together?"

"Shield, Hunt, and I never had parents. We were basically raised by the whole tribe. Shield is a bit older than us, so he’s always looked after us," Mao said, then chuckled sheepishly. "Sorry you had to see that earlier. I’m not usually like that."

Realizing Mao was trying to explain his earlier crying, Lu Xiao was amused. "Yes, I know. You were just worried about Hunt. I understand."

"Yeah... Hunt was on the brink of death. I couldn’t even bring myself to look at him. I’m so happy and so grateful to you, Lady Lu Xiao, that he’s recovered this much. If it weren’t for you, Hunt would’ve been a goner for sure." As he spoke, Mao’s eyes started to turn red again.

"He’ll be alright." Lu Xiao didn’t offer platitudes, just that simple, firm statement.

Mao nodded emphatically. How could he not trust Lu Xiao? He had seen Hunt’s recovery with his own eyes, after all.

When they arrived at the old Chieftain’s wooden hut, the Chieftain was up on a higher level, watering flowers. She smiled. "Lady Lu Xiao, you’ve arrived."

"Good day, Chieftain." Lu Xiao entered the hut and sat down comfortably. The old Chieftain poured her a pail of water. "Thank you for making the trip. It must have been tiring."

"What was it you wanted to see me about?" Lu Xiao didn’t want to waste time with pleasantries.

The old Chieftain, likely understanding Lu Xiao’s direct nature, got straight to the point. "By my count, you’ve been with the Canghe Tribe for a while now. What do you think of us?"

"The Canghe Tribe is wonderful, of course. With a chieftain like you to lead it, it will surely prosper." This was no empty flattery. From her few interactions with the Chieftain, she could sense the old woman was a truly wise leader.

"I’m happy to hear you feel that way. In that case, would you be willing to stay in the Canghe Tribe and take on the role of witch doctor?"

Her words sent a small jolt through Lu Xiao’s heart. It was rather unexpected.

She had known the old Chieftain wouldn’t have summoned her for no reason, but she hadn’t expected this.

Lu Xiao smiled and answered honestly, without hiding anything. "I can’t be sure. I can only say that for as long as I remain here, I will do my best to fill the role of witch doctor for the Canghe Tribe. But eventually, I must return home."

A flash of regret crossed the old Chieftain’s eyes, but it was quickly followed by relief. "Thank you, Lady Lu Xiao. You are very honest. You did not try to deceive me."

Lu Xiao smiled. "You must know as well as I do that we don’t belong here. We’ll have to leave sooner or later; it’s just a matter of time. I am incredibly grateful for the tribe’s protection during this period, and I’m happy to help solve some of your problems in return. But by the same token, we are not fated to stay here forever, and I wouldn’t want to lie to you."

The old Chieftain nodded. "I know. I’m glad you’ve told me this. If that’s the case, then for the time you do remain, would you be willing to serve as the Canghe Tribe’s temporary witch doctor?"

Lu Xiao nodded. "Alright."

The old Chieftain looked at her, relieved and clearly satisfied.

Even though the young woman before her was very young, the old Chieftain had never underestimated her abilities. The power Lu Xiao had demonstrated was more than enough to earn their trust.

The old Chieftain even felt that anyone who spent time with Lu Xiao couldn’t possibly dislike her.

News of Hunt’s recovery quickly spread throughout the tribe.

Upon hearing the news, many people made a special trip to Hunt’s hut to see for themselves. The place had previously been an unofficial off-limits area for the tribe, as everyone feared Hunt would go on a rampage and hurt them.

But now that they heard Hunt was getting better, their fear vanished.

However, to ensure Hunt could recover in peace, Shield posted several people to stand guard around the hut. He allowed the visitors to look from a distance but absolutely forbade them from disturbing Hunt.

Even so, when they saw Hunt had truly recovered enough to leave the hut and move about freely, they were all in disbelief.

Many of the men, in particular, became very emotional.

After all, Hunt’s recovery meant their tribe was no longer under the curse of the Dark God.

They no longer had to live in constant fear of suffering Hunt’s fate—of being cursed and turned into something neither human nor monster.

Seeing Hunt’s recovery with their own eyes, those in the tribe who had been skeptical about Lu Xiao becoming the witch doctor had a sudden change of heart.

’That young woman from the outside might be young, but she’s the real deal! To think she could heal Hunt in such a short time... this is wonderful!’

The Canghe Tribe finally had its own witch doctor again.

This, in turn, led to everyone wanting to do something to show their gratitude.

And so, Lu Xiao began to notice that prey, wild vegetables, and various fruits would mysteriously appear in front of the gate to their little courtyard.

At first, she thought Shield was having them sent over. But then one day, Fred came out just as a tribesperson was setting down a delivery. The person looked up, saw him, and froze for a second before turning and bolting as if they were afraid Fred would call them back and make them take their gifts with them.

When Lu Xiao heard about it, she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
