(From Blue’s Perspective)

We returned to Querencia three days after the banquet. After that night, Cyan went to the magic tower of Querencia and stayed there. He said there were a lot of things to discuss. I could not just leave right away, so I came back three days later.

It was the first time in two months that I got cramps. The cramps were not too bad, but my mood ended up becoming grumpy. We went straight to the magic tower and I ended up throwing up for fifteen minutes.

"Do you want to lie down, Your Highness?" Ruby asked.

"No, I just want to sit down. My back hurts from bending like that for fifteen minutes," I said and took a seat in a chair. "Dion has been grumpy since morning, I don’t know why. He has been crying for a long time. I don’t know why both he and I are feeling this way at the same time."

"Something about the weather?" Ruby mumbled. "It’s really hot these days. Maybe that’s why."

"Maybe."

Dem had taken Dion to another room to put him to sleep. Dem was the only one in our family who did not lose his mind today. Both Dion and I acted unlike ourselves and kind of crazy. And Dem had to bear both of our attitudes.

Cyan had been with Luc, discussing something. When he heard I was vomiting, he said it was gross and did not come in the room for half an hour, and not until he heard I was alright.

"You should have some respect for the person who saved your ass," I snapped at Cyan.

"And maybe you should mind your own business. I could have done just fine without your help and your husband’s silly play," Cyan said.

"That’s because you don’t care whether you live or die," I said.

He remained quiet for a moment. "Then, why do you? It’s not your life."

"You are my brother."

"You wouldn’t save that Draven."

"You are not Draven. No one is. He is trash and deserves to be thrown into a bin," I said. "You helped me, so I am just returning the favor."

"I helped you because I needed to escape from him as well. I needed your help as well."

"Let’s forget it now," I said. "I am literally not in the mood to talk about it. You said you want to discuss something important. Can I know what it is?"

"I will leave you two alone. I’m sure Luc made a mess again. I need to get him to clean his workshop," Ruby said. Someone was going to get scolded now.

"I have been working on something. Let me ask you something. Can you turn into a snake?"

"Not literally a snake. Like I don’t slither on the ground and I don’t shed," I said.

"I don’t mean that. Is it like part of you…?"

"The sign on our backs, it has a snake. It defines what we are by birth. It is not something we earned; we were born with it. Probably that’s why Azure was no adamant about giving it," I said. "Part of us is a snake."

"Who else knows?"

"Dem and you. Others know just a little part, not this whole snake part," I said. "I cannot just tell them… It’s too…"

"Blue, how do you do it?"

"… You cannot do it?"

"I wouldn’t have asked you if I could," he said. He did not like the fact that I could do it and he could not. He always hated how I had more power than him. Yes, it was unfair, especially when we were born like this. "The point is, I should be able to do it. I might not have as much power as you or Azure, but I at least should be able to be what I am born as.

If that is what I am from the inside, we all are, then, I should be able to do it too. If I could not, Azure would never give me that mark. I also looked through a lot of ancient books."

"So, you were not just looking for a plant or something?"

"Of course not. I needed to go somewhere to do my research. Besides, I knew I would find some ancient books around there," he said.

"Ah, I burned the hut down," I murmured.

He shrugged. "It’s nothing. The books weren’t there. I would never be stupid enough to keep important things there."

"So, you still have the books?" I asked.

"Yes, but I can lend them only after I am done with them," he said. "And I don’t think you have that many things that you need to know from the pages of a book."

He stared at me, his blue eyes sharp. "It’s true that I know quite a few things, but…"

"Tell me what you know," he said.

"… You will find out by yourself if…"

"If I could turn, Blue, which I cannot yet. Tell me how you turned. Wasn’t it after you found out about it?"

"I knew only as much as you did. Azure told me a little," I said.

"Tell me what he told you."

His tone sounded like a command, but it did not actually feel that way. If it did, I would never utter a single word. Because no one could command me. If it was not for the silent plea I detected in his words, I would have never said anything.

"If you want to hear so badly, I will tell you exactly what he said. If you understand everything from it, go ahead," I said. "He said Dem could not handle the poison that was running through my veins. That was when I understood. Dem did not get poisoned on the battlefield. He was just very weak at that time, because of my poison.

This poison can spread from a lot of things. My blood, my saliva, you know."

"It is you. Your body, your power- they are all poison. Why do we have the snake sign? Haven’t you ever wondered?- This is what he said," I added.

"But you were King Demetrius’s mate and he was your… Wait," Cyan muttered, as realization hit him. "He was not your mate. Gods don’t have mates."

"We are not god, Cyan. We are the children of god. Unlike werewolves, we are god’s children, not creations. We do not go by fate."

"We go by will," he muttered. "Now, I know how you saved your husband… You made him your mate."

"I don’t know if we can say ’mate’. I just made that thing up, because it sounds good. I think it is one of the things that I can do, choosing someone to give a bit of my power. I haven’t told anyone this thing, but I think it cost me something…"

"What you mean is you can do it, but you are not supposed to?"

"Yes."

"What did it cost you?"

"An important part of my power," I said.

"Oh please, seeing what you can do, there can never be an important part of your power that is missing," he sneered.

"… Cyan, I cannot control minds," I said.

"… What?"

"I cannot… Every dark mage, even the really less powerful ones, can control at least one person’s mind," I said. "But I cannot. I can control no one’s mind."

"Since when?"

"Since the beginning. I thought it would happen after I got a grip of my power and I am pretty sure I once almost controlled someone’s mind," I said. "But after that day… after Dem woke up, I just could not. That part of my power just… vanished. But I can control animals."

"Dark mages cannot control animals."

"I know. I know that. I think I am being punished for playing with nature and doing something that no one is supposed to do. I am not supposed to make someone half-mortal. I am not supposed to make someone immune to my poison; only the bloodline of the black lord can be immune to this poison because they have this poison in their veins. The question is- who is punishing me?" I said.

"Well, whoever it is, they surely did a good job in altering my power of controlling the minds of humans and werewolves with the power to control the minds of animals. They know I love animals and I won’t do it if I can. I unknowingly ended up controlling those birds and even now, I am hurting inside because I cannot undo it. I don’t know how to undo it."

"If you are being punished for this, then I don’t think you will get no consequence if you truly end up making the eye," he said.

"… I made it."

"You what?" he almost choked. "Blue, you made the eye? When? Last time you said..."

I nodded. I had finished it on the same evening as the banquet.
