Chapter 114: Did I Say You Could Leave?

The Everwake shot his head up, his rainbow-colored pupils contracting as they reflected the silver lightning tearing across the sky!

The lightning descended like divine punishment. The torrential rain recoiled in its wake, carving out a veritable vacuum around the bamboo house.

Evangeline tapped her foot on the ground. In that instant, thunder boomed as lightning struck the earth. It writhed like a frenzy of silver serpents, using the glistening water to weave a dazzling web of electricity across the ground!

Before the surrounding Swarm could even flee, they were incinerated to dust with a piercing SIZZLE!

The lightning lit up the sky, bright as day, tearing the veil of night to shreds.

Evangeline’s long hair whipped about in the furious gale, yet she stood as unmoving as a pine tree. Her back was ramrod straight, her narrow eyes fixed coldly on The Everwake in the distance.

He stared at the mountain of ashen Swarm corpses on the ground, his expression as black as thunder. His knuckles whitened as killing intent surged from him in waves, his kaleidoscopic, glass-like eyes utterly frigid.

The Everwake suddenly barked, pointing a finger at the Bunny in Lachlan’s arms, "Kill that cub!"

Lachlan’s expression shifted drastically, a storm raging in the depths of his gray-brown eyes.

His arms, already stiff, tightened abruptly, clutching Bunny protectively. His long knuckles turned a pale white from the strain, and his Adam’s apple bobbed as he stared at Caden Albright and the others, all trapped in the illusion’s grip.

A vicious glint flared in Evangeline’s eyes. She moved like a phantom, appearing before The Everwake in a flash.

Before he could react, the sharp sound of a SLAP exploded next to his ear.

Wielding the force of lightning itself, Evangeline’s fair hand slammed viciously across his face. The impact stirred his floor-length black hair. Five bloody welts instantly rose on his pale cheek, and the butterfly sigil on his skin flashed erratically.

"You’re of the Swarm, not some mindless brute. If you want revenge, come for me."

Evangeline’s voice was terrifyingly soft. The lightning coiling around her fingertips cast her bewitching face in a harsh light, making her features look even more severe.

At that moment, a piercing shriek echoed from the sky!

The Wyvern that was Orion had been circling for some time. It suddenly dove, talons like hooks, aiming to kill the Bunny in Lachlan’s arms!

A sharp light flashed in Evangeline’s eyes. The Cold Frost Whip shot from her hand, coiling precisely around the Wyvern’s talons.

She clenched her fist!

"BOOM—"

The Wyvern struggled violently in mid-air but was no match for Evangeline’s overwhelming strength. With a piteous cry, it crashed heavily to the ground, plunging into the standing water with a massive splash!

In the blink of an eye, the Wyvern shifted back into his human form. He staggered to his feet, his mind now clear, as if he’d broken free from some restraint. He stared at The Everwake, his eyes filled with terror.

Clearly, he remembered every detail of what he had just done.

A low growl rumbled from The Everwake’s throat, the veins on his neck bulging.

But before he could speak, Evangeline’s razor-sharp gaze swept over him. The warning in her eyes made The Everwake freeze, as if his throat would be slit the instant he uttered a sound.

He had no doubt of Evangeline’s ferocity and, for a moment, was truly cowed.

The lightning coalesced into chains that snaked through the puddles, coiling like living things around the beast forms of Caden Albright and the others.

The sky abruptly darkened. The only sound was the SIZZLE of electricity searing flesh and bone.

"CRACK—"

The sound of snapping bone rang out again and again. The great beasts’ spines looked as if they were being bent to the breaking point, their Scale Armor cracking and shattering.

Evangeline showed no mercy. As the last of the lightning receded, they reverted to their human forms one by one, their life force drained. They all collapsed to their knees in the mud, bodies doubled over, every gasp flecked with blood.

The standing water reflected their deathly pale faces, their skin branded with the lightning’s scorched black marks.

As they regained their senses one by one, memories rushed back in a torrent.

Every moment of their lethal assault on Evangeline replayed vividly in their minds. Caden Albright, Thorne, and the others trembled violently, their faces turning a deathly white, as if they’d been drained of all blood.

They knelt in the puddles, swaying and on the verge of collapse, their long fingers digging into the mire.

The killing blows they’d aimed at her under The Everwake’s control now felt like bone knives twisting in their guts, leaving them feeling mangled from the inside out. The scorched marks left by the lightning were nothing compared to the pain in their hearts.

A sinister glint flashed in The Everwake’s eyes. He was nothing if not decisive. Realizing he couldn’t win today, he made a snap judgment, turned to leave, and spread his magnificent Feather Wings. In an instant, he was a hundred feet away.

He had planned for every contingency but one.

Evangeline had become a Witch—one who could walk unscathed through lightning. Against her, even the Swarm from the Umbral Abyss had been useless, utterly incinerated to dust!

"Did I say you could leave?" A voice, both bewitching and bone-chillingly cold, sounded right beside his ear.

The Everwake’s pupils contracted. Before he could react, a powerful force yanked his floor-length hair, snapping his head back. He was forced to meet Evangeline’s cold eyes as the butterfly sigil on his cheek erupted in an unnatural, iridescent halo.

The Everwake stared fixedly at Evangeline, the twelve massive wings on his back retracting into his spine. His voice was filled with disbelief. "Why? Why is my butterfly powder useless against you?"

Evangeline tilted her head, then suddenly brought the edge of her hand down on The Everwake’s neck in a sharp chop.

His vision went black. As his consciousness faded, he vaguely saw her smiling. His own dilated pupils were reflected in her eyes, which were full of scorn. "That’s because," she said, "in this whole world, there’s nothing I’m afraid of."

Evangeline dragged The Everwake towards the bamboo house. When she passed Caden Albright and the others, she didn’t stop, only gave them a sidelong glance and said, "What are you still standing there for? Enjoying the rain?"

Raindrops dripped from her long lashes, creating tiny splashes in the puddles below.

Lachlan was the first to react. Holding Bunny, he followed behind her, heading straight for the bamboo house.

The bamboo floorboards creaked softly underfoot. Suddenly, as if remembering something, Evangeline stopped and turned back.

The outer corners of her narrow eyes tilted up, her fox-like gaze hooking into Loras.

His eyes were downcast. Soaked purple curls clung to the side of his neck, making his complexion seem all the more pale. The fragile air about him was a stark contrast to Nix’s gloom, and right now, he wasn’t lost to madness.

Evangeline watched him in silence. Her bewitching voice carried through the rain. "Loras, come inside." 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

He seemed to tremble at the sound of her voice. Before he could even look up, Thorne had grabbed his drenched sleeve and was hauling him forward. Loras stumbled a few steps, his purple hair slinging a shower of water droplets.

Evangeline saw this and, with a slight curl of her lips, shot Thorne an approving glance.

Thorne’s tense posture finally relaxed a little. But then, remembering what he’d just done, he hung his head as if all his strength had been sapped. He swallowed, utterly dejected.

Hesitantly, he glanced back at Caden Albright. His brow was furrowed, and his dark green eyes flickered.

Thorne’s lips parted, a barely audible whisper escaping his throat. "Eva... she..."

Caden Albright’s stunningly handsome face looked as if the rain had washed all the color from it. His long, silver-white hair was plastered to his back, its ends drooping lifelessly. His amber eyes were shrouded in mist, and even the familiar, vibrant color at their corners had faded.

He shook his head, his voice so soft it seemed afraid to disturb the curtain of rain. "Eva... she won’t blame us."

As the words left his lips, he lifted his gaze to the warm yellow light filtering through the bamboo window. Rain dripped from his long lashes, forging a cold glint in the depths of his eyes. His long fingers clenched into a fist, his knuckles turning a ghastly white.

"Let’s go," he said, his smooth voice laced with ice. "We can’t just let what happened today slide."

A murderous aura surged around Caden Albright. He was suppressing a firestorm of rage; he’d never been made a fool of like this before!

The. Ever. Wake.
