Chapter 56: Something Happened!

It took Asher a while to get the woman back to the car. This time, he didn’t waste a minute on the phone and started driving the car. God knows what Nicholas was doing, but it was clear that he hadn’t spoken a word of Abigail’s situation at his home. No wonder his aunt didn’t come to visit.

Of course, if Rosa knew about this situation, she would have taken her luggage and stayed in the hospital in Asher’s place.

For some reason, the latter felt like this current situation wasn’t that bad. At least, he got to stay with the woman he liked. Now, in Abigail’s eyes, he would surely be a better person than his cousin.

The thought of Nicholas made Asher even madder than before. His hands gripped the steering wheel firmly as he stared ahead into the road. His eyes filled with fury.

At this time, Abigail had calmed down, only a little. She stared outside the window.

It wasn’t like she didn’t know there was a problem with her situation. It was just that when in her mania period, she wouldn’t accept it. And now when she was depressed, she didn’t care about her situation anymore, making her feel extremely empty in her heart.

She wanted to do something desperately, but what? She didn’t know. Her mind was calm, too calm, which made her feel frightened to death. She wasn’t habitual of so much silence.

Maybe this was the kind of life she deserved. Surely, her mother abandoned her to the asylum for a reason. Had Abigail committed some kind of crime as a kid? She must have. Otherwise, why would the older woman not care about her own daughter?

If only Rosa were a real person...

If only this world were real...

If only this wasn’t a figment of her imagination...

Abigail shifted her gaze toward Asher as her eyes moistened slightly.

If only this handsome man driving the car weren’t only a side character in her novel who was killed brutally by her...

If only Nicholas was at least a little bit kind toward her...

No...

Maybe she didn’t deserve anything good in her life. After all, what else did she ever do other than troubling those nurses and her doctors because of her constant mania?

Sure, she wouldn’t get manic all the time, but it was the kind of phase that stayed with her for a long time with appropriate intervals of depression. That’s why she would always be in denial about her own situation.

But why was she like this?

Why was she even born if no one wanted her?

Why was she instead trapped in this godforsaken place?

Abigail felt teardrops rolling down her cheeks. She didn’t bother raising her hand to wipe them off. She continued to stare outside the window until they reached their destination.

The rainfall was heavy by this time as Asher got out of his seat and closed the door behind. He rushed over and pulled open the door to Abigail’s seat only to see the woman sitting there, staring blankly ahead with tears streaming down her cheeks.

Asher’s eyes widened. He really couldn’t connect the Abigail who would jump around and cause trouble with this messy depression case. What happened to her?!

It couldn’t be that the attack managed to get in her head, right?

His brows furrowed, but he didn’t call her out. At this moment, the only right person to handle her was probably his aunt.

His heart pained to see Abigail like this, but he also knew that this woman probably didn’t have him in her heart. But he still wouldn’t give up. He wouldn’t let a man like Nicholas get away with it.

His hand around the door handle tightened as he forced himself to smile and said, "Abigail, we are here."

"Oh..." Abigail lowered her head and got out of the car weakly. She looked like she had lost all her energy and will to even walk.

She continued to look down and walked, following Asher behind. She didn’t even realize where she was going.

She was still thinking about those what-ifs that could never come true.

For instance, what if her own mother loved her truly?

What if there was an ’Asher’ in her real life as well?

What if Nicholas loved her as she had imagined?

Not that she wanted to reciprocate with her characters. After all, they were all fake, right? This world... It was merely a figment of her imagination. She would one day wake up and realize it was all in her mind.

If it wasn’t real... then what was the point of loving someone? It was better to guard her heart right from the start.

If only this world were real...

More tears poured down her eyes. Abigail had already realized that this world was the place she wanted to live in the most. The reason? At least, here, she had people like Rosa and Asher who cared about her from their heart and soul.

As for Asher...

Ah, why was this person so good to her? She knew she couldn’t reciprocate no matter what. This world wasn’t real for her. Even if she ended up falling for someone, Abigail knew she would probably end up denying it to death no matter what condition she was in: considering both her mania and depression.

If she couldn’t love, and if she couldn’t be loved... then what was the point of living? Wasn’t it better to just die?

Abigail suddenly felt her chest heavy as if some kind of heavy load was thrown onto her, making her feel difficult to breath. More tears rolled down her cheeks as she stopped in her tracks. Even her legs felt too weak as they trembled with every step she took.

Finally, she fell to the ground, on her knees.

Asher seemed to have heard that sound as he turned back and looked at the woman behind him, fallen on her knees. Then she curled up and hugged herself, sobbing loudly this time.

"Abigail!" Asher truly didn’t know how to handle such a situation. He looked at her anxiously as he pulled out his phone and made a call.

"Aunt!" He screamed for help on the phone. "Come out faster! Something happened to Abigail!"
