Chapter 51: Walking Away

"Nicholas!" Abigail became even more anxious at the sight of her statue of a husband. She almost jumped off the bed when the man finally spoke.

"Sit back. Doctor ordered you to rest."

"How can I sit when you’re injured?!" Abigail was so anxious that she didn’t even think deeply about her own words. To her, it was merely her caring about her favorite character. "You can’t die!"

Yes, Nicholas can’t die now that she has invested so much effort to save him!

Nicholas: "..."

He didn’t want to trust her words. After all, Abigail had a history of feeding him and his cousin with her attention at the same time because of her face-con attitude.

So he took a deep breath and said, "You can rest. If you need anything, you can call the doctor."

"No, wait!" Abigail didn’t want to listen to him anymore as she pushed the blanket off and moved her legs.

The moment she moved her body, a wave of pain emerged from her injury on her stomach, making her hiss.

Gosh, that hurt!

Abigail’s face paled as she gasped because of pain.

Nicholas’s eyes widened. His body froze at the sight of this wife struggling in pain once again. Before he could move to help, a familiar voice echoed from behind him.

"Abigail!" Asher returned not more than ten minutes later only to find Abigail trying to get off the bed and Nicholas just standing there and seeing it happen.

He had asked the doctor hurriedly about her situation and learned that the woman shouldn’t move from the bed at all.

Surely Nicholas should have known this too, shouldn’t he? So why the heck was he simply standing there and doing nothing like some heartless guy?!

Even enemies treat each other better than how this guy treated his own wife!

But Asher didn’t have time to waste his breath on his cousin. He rushed inside the room and hurried over to Abigail. "Don’t move if you don’t want to feel pain!? Woman, are you trying to kill yourself?"

Asher felt angry all of a sudden and wronged for no reason. So he vented, "What the heck you were thinking just sending yourself to the death’s door?!"

"Well..." Abigail felt slightly better now that Asher scolded her like this. She knew it sounded masochistic and sadist, but she liked it when her family scolded her. She had never known what it felt like to be angered by a family member.

Of course, she still considered Asher her cousin-in-law, nothing else. So she opened her mouth and smiled, saying, "I was busy saving Nicholas."

Now, that was a reply no one had expected. The things that had occurred back then happened within a matter of seconds. And after seeing Abigail being stabbed in the stomach, both the men’s minds turned blank.

Nicholas thought back to the event and realized he had actually forgotten such an important thing! How could he not order his assistant to find those men?!

No, wait a minute, it turned out his wife pushed him aside to save him?

So that knife was meant to stab him?

Nicholas’s entire body froze for the second time.

On the other side, Asher felt bitter in his heart after hearing those words. Ah, how could he forget this woman was extremely serious about her marriage and didn’t see him as a romantic interest at all?

He coughed and said, "That knife was meant to attack him?"

"Kind of? But I’m not sure. There were two people." She was sure if it weren’t for saving Nicholas, she wouldn’t have been stabbed so easily. At the very least, she could have screamed and dodged.

Nicholas also realized that there were two people. He knew he should call his assistant at the moment to find those men, but he couldn’t move his fingers. He stared at his wife and then at his cousin, who was still holding the woman’s hand for God knows how long.

His brows furrowed, but in the end, he said nothing.

What else could he say when he had already decided to let go and suppress these emotions before they could grow into something he couldn’t control? He still hasn’t changed his mind.

He was determined to step back and let Abigail decide where she wanted to go. After all, she had a better choice for a husband in front of her.

Nicholas didn’t know why his heart felt stuffed and heavy once again.

Ah, he needed to take a breather.

Thus, without saying a single word, he walked out of the room, never turning back. No one noticed that he had walked out of the room without speaking.

Abigail was looking at Asher and scratched her head in confusion, "Does it matter how I was stabbed? You should find those men first! I’m sure there must be a security camera there in the hotel!"

"You want me to get out of here and leave you alone?" Asher was still fuming in anger as he thought of the reason why she was stabbed. "I don’t trust you right now."

Abigail pouted and turned her head toward the window. "Whatever. Then continue to stay here and get bored because I’m sleeping!"

She laid back on her bed and covered herself with the blanket up to the head, with only her hair showing from above.

Asher felt funny seeing her, but his mood was still off. He couldn’t think of anything other than killing a certain someone for making Abigail like this.

The mixed emotions in his heart continued to grow further and further, sprouting into a mix of love and jealousy. Again, he thought to himself, why couldn’t it be him who married this woman?

No, it wasn’t too late yet.

He could still win her heart. Just because Nicholas came first doesn’t mean he should have all the sweets!

Asher found a chair and sat back, staring at the young woman silently and unblinkingly. There was a reason why he didn’t rush over to find the attacker.

First, this country wasn’t his area. So, it would take time for him to contact the authorities. Second, even though Nicholas was heartless, he still had some sense to keep up the pretence of being a husband. Asher knew his cousin would definitely find the attackers because that attack was also aimed at him.

No matter what, he at least had to work to save his life right?

Since Nicholas knew this place well, Asher was rest assured that the killers would be found in no time. Thus, he can use this rare moment of peace and stare at his crush-turned-potential lover all he wants.
