Chapter 50: Are You Alright?!

Nicholas didn’t know how much he would hate his silence in the future. If he were to offer an explanation, or if he were to take strict actions to show his emotions, things would be easier in the future.

But alas! He just had to be stubborn and suppress his anxiety, showing that he wasn’t disturbed by his wife’s accident at all. This little action of his gave others an impression that he was a heartless young man who never cared about a woman, his wife at that.

At first, Asher just wanted to vent his anger. But when he saw the young man standing there like a fool without replying, the anger in his heart spiked all of a sudden.

He grabbed the man’s collar and said, "You should be lucky that you’re family!"

It wasn’t that Asher didn’t know that without his cousin’s connections, it would have been harder to save the woman. But so what? Did a person have to be so cold and heartless when dealing with such an emotion?

It was said that a person’s true self was revealed when faced with a drastic situation. Nicholas’s own wife was stabbed in the stomach. He should have at least shown a little worry on his face.

But no, he continued to stand there. It was the guards who rushed over to save the woman.

And Asher wanted to leave that woman in his hands, thinking he had nothing to do with them. Heh, if he did nothing, Abigail would probably have died without even realizing how cold her husband actually was!

The more Asher thought about it, the angrier he became. He finally let go of the man and said, "Then the race is on. You can try all you want to keep her by your side, but I’ll make sure to snatch her away right under your nose."

Asher’s voice was cold as he stared at his cousin and walked away, heading toward the hotel. Of course, he didn’t mean to rest. He just wanted to take a quick bath and dress up.

What kind of damned husband was this man?!

Asher’s fist clenched.

It wasn’t that Asher was head over heels for Abigail. He wasn’t some cliche male lead of a romance novel. Of course, he wouldn’t deny that he felt something for the woman, but it wasn’t too much to the point that he would fight his own ruthless cousin.

But what happened today was a wake-up call for him.

Why should he be a good person and back away when he could steal her from her husband?

After determining his goal, Asher felt slightly relaxed as he rushed to the hotel.

Back in the corridor, Nicholas stood all alone, fixing his clothes, seemingly brushing off nonexistent dust off his shoulders. He looked in the direction where Asher had disappeared and averted his eyes.

Of course, the seed of jealousy sprouted in his heart the moment Asher said those words, but he didn’t want to continue to be entangled with Abigail. The reason? He had realized after this incident that he really did possess some feelings for her.

That’s why, if that cousin of his wanted to pursue his wife, Nicholas wouldn’t butt in between. It would be better if he continued to work hard day and night. That way, his feelings would disappear in no time.

Nicholas took a deep breath and took a glance at his screen. At this time, he felt a slight hesitation in his heart. He should have made a call to his assistant to book the flight, but he couldn’t move his fingers.

Honestly, he didn’t really want to go. His heart twisted uncomfortably at the thought of leaving her behind. The sprout of jealousy soon bloomed into a tree, making his chest feel suffocated.

Nicholas clenched his fist.

He couldn’t let himself go astray merely because of his puny emotions. For him, the only person who ever mattered to him was his mom. As for Abigail...

If she continued to stay with him, the only thing she would receive was coldness and nothing else. So, wasn’t letting Asher have his way a better choice?

But Nicholas couldn’t move.

Just as he was standing there, the doctors who were inside the ward suddenly opened the door and walked outside. The head doctor looked at Nicholas and nodded.

"She has woken up."

Nicholas’s heart made a sudden leap at that.

Earlier, upon seeing his wife bathed in blood, he had frozen up stupidly. That image of her had been stored in his subconscious, making him feel suffocated in his chest. Even when he closed his eyes, he would see flashes of those images.

This was what made Nicholas realize that he had emotions for that woman. But how could things escalate so fast? Didn’t he hate Abigail because of her family history?

Even if it was not for her family, the woman was too loud and irritating. She wasn’t an idle choice for her and vice versa. They were both irritated with one another despite the obvious attraction.

If someone were to take a compatibility test between them, it would surely fall beneath the average point.

Thus...

Falling behind was a good choice. Otherwise, Nicholas didn’t know if he could stop himself from being rough again with the woman in a fit of anger.

Even though he tried to explain himself again and again, he still stood there facing the doctor as he listened to all the medical details. In the end, the doctor handed him a list of medicines needed.

"She’s at a critical stage. She shouldn’t move unless it’s a bathroom emergency. We recommend complete bed rest for an entire month after discharge. But of course, she can only leave the hospital when she’s stable."

After that, he walked away.

Nicholas stared at the piece of paper in his hand as he frowned.

Whatever. He might as well stay a bit more and make sure she takes her medicine on time.

Thus, he pushed the door open and looked inside.

A pale, trembling Abigail sat on the bed. She jolted at the sound of the door opening. Once she saw who it was at the door, her eyes turned red as she asked anxiously, "Nicholas, are you alright?! He didn’t stab you right? Did the doctor check up on you?"

She was anxious for him?

Nicholas stood at the door, stunned.
