Chapter 382: Chapter 381: Breaking Off the Engagement

When Naomi Kenway saw Jenna Shaw actually come out, a smile spread across her face. "There’s no need to be heartbroken over a scumbag like him. This is so much better. Now no one can hold you back from your hobbies."

Jenna Shaw nodded. "This feeling of freedom is amazing. I don’t have to force myself to keep my hair long or wear dresses anymore. I can live however I want." She seemed to let out a sigh of relief. "Naomi, I talked to Mom and Dad yesterday and told them I want to break off the engagement. I don’t want anything to do with Walter Ford ever again."

Naomi Kenway and Jenna Shaw walked into the mall arm in arm. Hearing this, Naomi tilted her head slightly and asked, "So what was their reaction?"

"They haven’t agreed yet. My mom said it’s normal for couples to fight and that we should just work through it. Plus, we’re already engaged, so we can’t just break up over a few minor squabbles. I told them it’s because Walter Ford cheated on me—more than once—and that’s why I want to end the engagement."

Jenna Shaw forced a smile. "Maybe it’s because the Shaw and Ford families have a lot of business partnerships. Dad didn’t agree right away. He just said he would help me by having a good talk with Walter Ford."

Naomi Kenway’s brows furrowed. "I’ll have your brother..."

The very fact that they had arranged her marriage to Ethan Shaw showed Naomi that the Shaw parents were a despotic and feudalistic pair; they wouldn’t change their minds easily.

"There’s no need, Naomi." Jenna Shaw shook her head. "My parents already agreed this morning. I threatened them that if they didn’t let me break off the engagement, I would kill myself. I know it’s an extreme method, and I don’t actually plan on doing it. It’s not worth destroying my precious life for Walter Ford. But if I hadn’t said that, my parents would have just kept treating this like a minor tiff."

"Jenna..." Naomi Kenway looked at her with heartache. "You’ve been through so much."

Jenna Shaw smiled and shook her head. "I’m fine, Naomi. This suffering is nothing. The real torment would have been if I’d actually registered our marriage and tied the knot with Walter Ford. The thought of him cheating on me again and again after we were married... I’m just glad he yelled some sense into me and stopped me from stepping into that abyss."

"Let’s not talk about him anymore." Naomi Kenway affectionately linked her arm with Jenna’s. "Come on, let’s go browse inside."

*

Walter Ford sat in his office, his expression dark and sullen. After a moment, he called his assistant over and asked, "Has anyone come looking for me recently? Didn’t I say there was no need to drive Jenna Shaw out of the company?"

The assistant quickly shook his head. "We didn’t drive Ms. Shaw away. She hasn’t come in at all these past few days."

"How is that possible..." Walter Ford frowned.

The phone rang. Walter Ford answered it impatiently. "What is it?"

A cavalier voice came from the other end. "Felix, come on out and have some fun! A bunch of new girls just showed up, each one prettier than the last. I know you like the innocent type, so I specially..."

"That’s enough," Walter Ford cut him off impatiently. "You guys go have fun. I don’t have time."

"No time? Felix, I heard you broke up with that tomboy. Isn’t that great news? Our handsome and suave Felix has been tied down by someone who’s not quite a man and not quite a woman for years. Now that you’re free, you should come out and celebrate with the boys!"

"Shut up. Who told you we broke up?"

"Huh... That’s what everyone’s saying. The guys wanted to help Felix celebrate. Said Jenna Shaw finally learned her place and realized she’s not good enough for our Felix. What’s the point of marrying a woman like that? Is she gonna be a wife or one of the bros?"

"I said shut up! Can’t you tell I’m pissed off?"

"Felix, what’s there to be pissed about? You... you haven’t actually fallen for Jenna Shaw, have you? Don’t do it, Felix..."

Walter Ford slammed the phone down with a CLICK, snorted, and cursed coldly at the device, "Lunatic."

’How could he possibly like Jenna Shaw? She’s just a brash tomboy. It’s not like he, Walter Ford, has a screw loose, right?’

But even as he thought this, Walter Ford felt his heart thumping in his chest.

’What the hell...’

He had thought that after their last argument, Jenna Shaw would come running back to him, bowing her head and apologizing within two days. He never expected a whole week to pass with no word from her. ’Isn’t she the clingy type? Why hasn’t she reacted this time...’

Walter Ford leaned back slightly in his office chair. The moment he closed his eyes, he thought of Jenna Shaw. He almost never thought of her; no one actively misses someone they try to avoid like the plague.

But somehow, he clearly remembered all the little moments he’d shared with Jenna Shaw. Back in school, he was a picky eater, and much of the cafeteria food didn’t suit his tastes. Jenna Shaw would pick out all the foods he hated from his tray—things like cilantro and carrots—and eat them with great relish. She’d say you couldn’t waste food, then flash him a grin, showing off her pearly white teeth.

’How could someone be so stupid?’

His phone rang again. Walter Ford was putting on his glasses and glanced at the screen. His expression instantly turned serious.

"Dad."

"Didn’t I tell you to be more discreet? Look what you’ve done now! The Shaw Family wants to annul the engagement, and they’re even demanding justice for Jenna Shaw."

"What? What do you mean, annul the engagement?"

Walter Ford found this utterly absurd. ’Jenna Shaw is always so clingy,’ he thought. ’She worked so hard chasing me for so many years—how could she bear to annul the engagement?’

"Are you not aware of what you’ve done? I’ve told you time and again to have some self-control; debauchery is bad for your health. The Shaw Family’s stance is firm. The marriage we arranged is probably off." His voice was filled with rage. "You useless waste! Didn’t you say Jenna Shaw was crazy about you? How could you screw up something so simple? Can’t you even control your own dick?!"

Walter Ford didn’t bother asking what right his philandering father had to lecture him. All he heard was that Jenna Shaw wanted to end the engagement.

Walter Ford was stunned for a long time. By the time he snapped out of it, the call had already ended.

The office door was pushed open gently, and a graceful Crystal Bishop walked in.

"Why didn’t you knock before coming in?"

"Huh? I..." Crystal Bishop’s eyes reddened at Walter Ford’s accusatory tone. "You’re the one who told me I didn’t need to knock."

"That’s changed now."

Crystal Bishop walked over, looking aggrieved, and placed the coffee in her hand on the desk in front of him. "Walter Vance, don’t be angry anymore. It’s not good for your health. Have some hot coffee."

Crystal Bishop moved to massage his shoulders to help him relax, but he held up a hand to stop her. "That’s not necessary."

"Why are you suddenly so cold to me..."

"You don’t need to come to work anymore. You can keep living in the apartment I bought you. On top of that, I’ll give you another three million, but there are conditions." His gaze was icy. "From now on, you are not to bother me again."

The expression on Crystal Bishop’s face shifted from joy to sorrow. With a THUD, she fell to her knees and hugged Walter Ford’s leg.
