The Villain Mom Awakens — Going Viral by Parenting on a Reality Show-Chapter 285: Renee Jennings Falsifies Data
With the main party’s consent, the director agreed.
After a thorough check, Naomi Kenway’s data was, naturally, fine. Renee Jennings’s expression was complicated. ’Since when does Naomi know so many A-listers? Even Rhys Quinn was hawking watermelons for her...’
Renee Jennings forced a smile, acting as if nothing had happened. "I’ve really learned a lot. Thank you, Nina."
"Don’t be in such a hurry to leave," Naomi Kenway said, stopping her. "Didn’t you want to get some pointers? I have some time to coach you."
Renee Jennings’s smile stiffened. ’Naomi is really getting full of herself,’ she thought. But a second later, she heard Naomi say, "Director, I’d like to see Renee Jennings’s backend data."
Before the director could even speak, Renee Jennings spun around, looking flustered. "You... I don’t think that’s necessary." Her smile was rigid. "I’ve already learned my lesson, so there’s no need for you to go to the trouble of looking."
Naomi Kenway’s eyes narrowed slightly. She had only been testing the waters, but it turned out Renee Jennings really did have something to hide.
It made sense. Renee Jennings wasn’t famous, yet she had managed to sell eighty thousand units without any outside help. It was nearly impossible for those numbers not to be inflated.
"It’s no trouble. I’ve got nothing better to do," Naomi Kenway said casually.
Renee Jennings walked over, blocking Naomi Kenway’s path. "I think I just heard them calling everyone to gather. We should hurry over so we don’t keep the others waiting."
"Really? I didn’t hear anything," Naomi Kenway said, turning to the cameraman beside her. "Did you?"
The cameraman shook his head.
"See? No one else heard it. I think you’re hearing things. You should get that checked out at a hospital when you have time. But wait..." Naomi Kenway scanned Renee Jennings from head to toe. "Why are you blocking my way? Do you think this is unnecessary, or... are you scared?" Naomi mimicked Renee’s earlier tone. "Don’t tell me... your data is fake, is it?"
"What are you talking about?!" 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
Naomi Kenway’s expression turned cold. "I was perfectly open and let you check my data. If you keep being this secretive, it only proves you have something to hide."
[No way, did Renee Jennings actually fake her data???]
[I knew it! She had less than 10,000 viewers in her stream, but the purchase rate was absurdly high! Did every person buy eight units on average? Maybe my math is off, but thinking back, a lot of things felt off when Renee Jennings was selling.]
[Why does Renee Jennings always resort to these petty tricks? Can’t she just focus on doing things the right way?]
[Hey, the results aren’t out yet. If there’s a lot of traffic, selling eighty thousand units isn’t impossible. Don’t try to stir things up in the comments. I believe in Renee.]
...
Renee Jennings’s face went pale. Naomi Kenway simply pushed her aside and walked forward.
Naomi Kenway looked at the data on the screen, moving the mouse continuously. The smile on her face grew wider and wider.
Renee Jennings’s heart was filled with resentment.
"Renee Jennings, you’re really something else. The top five buyers in your stream each bought five thousand units. Tsk... and all five of them are accounts that were just registered today, with IPs tracing back to Veridia..."
Her beautiful eyes crinkled with amusement as she looked over. "What, couldn’t your studio be a little more discreet when they were padding your numbers? This is so obvious. Did you think no one would check the backend data? And you’re right, no one would have... but you just had to remind me. Maybe you should hire me next time. I’d at least be more subtle about it."
Renee Jennings’s face was ashen, her nails digging into her palms. "Says who? I... my fans registered new accounts just to support me. Is there a problem with that?"
Seeing Renee Jennings was still stubbornly refusing to admit it, Naomi Kenway nodded. "You’re right. My claim isn’t very rigorous." She turned to the director. "To... clear our dear Renee Jennings’s name, you absolutely must investigate this thoroughly, Director. Otherwise..." She chuckled softly. "It would mean I’ve wrongly accused her."
Renee Jennings, with her guilty conscience, felt utterly humiliated. She stormed off, shouting, "You’re all deliberately making up lies to humiliate me!"
The director frowned. How could he not see what was going on? Without the filter of the camera for the audience, having actually interacted with her, the director was now finding Renee Jennings’s character to be deeply concerning.
He was an upright man and naturally disliked opportunistic people who cut corners, especially one who constantly made unreasonable demands and disturbed the peace of the entire production. But the contract was already signed. Unless Renee Jennings was involved in a major, damaging scandal, he would have to pay a hefty penalty to terminate it. On top of that, there was Christina Lynch to consider. He’d heard their marriage was rock-solid, so they certainly wouldn’t let the matter drop easily.
The director sighed.
*
Renee Jennings was simmering with frustration. When she returned to the canopy, she found that Nathan Lynch, who had been sitting on a stool, was gone. She frowned. "Always running off and making me worry..."
She called out Nathan Lynch’s name loudly.
Nearby, Chelsea Raines cleared her throat. "All the kids ran off to play in the watermelon patch."
"The watermelon patch?! I just changed him into new clothes..." Renee Jennings shot Chelsea Raines a complicated look. "Thanks."
With that, she left.
Renee Jennings quickly found Nathan Lynch. All five children were sitting together on a ridge in the field. What Renee found most unacceptable was that Nathan was playing with Ian Shaw. The two of them were huddled close together, big smiles on their faces.
’Haven’t I told him a hundred times to stay away from Naomi Kenway’s son?!’
Renee Jennings strode over and pulled Nathan away. "Nathan, what are you doing here? Do you have any idea how long I’ve been looking for you?"
Nathan Lynch looked up at her. "You left all of a sudden without telling me."
"I’m the adult. Do I need to report my every move to you?"
"Why is it different for adults and kids?"
"Oh, so now you’ve learned to talk back after playing for a bit, have you, Nathan? Did some bad kid teach you that?!" Renee Jennings said, glaring at Ian Shaw.
"We’re not bad kids, you’re the bad guy!" Ian piped up.
"Hmph, like mother, like son! My Nathan has a great future ahead of him. You’re a bad influence, dragging him down with you!" Having just been humiliated by Naomi Kenway, Renee Jennings was now taking her frustration out on Ian Shaw.
Saying this, she forcefully pulled Nathan Lynch away.
They hadn’t gone more than a few steps before Nathan Lynch began to struggle out of her grip. Renee Jennings refused to let go, until a sharp pain shot through her foot. She looked down in disbelief. "Nathan Lynch..." she hissed, turning her body slightly to block the camera’s view. "Didn’t I tell you not to play with Ian Shaw? Playing with stupid kids makes you stupid and unlikable! Just like you’re being right now."
But Nathan Lynch didn’t fall for it. "Ian isn’t a dummy!" he shouted. "He knows lots of things I don’t! You’re the dummy!"
With that, he ran off, heading straight back to the watermelon patch.
Leaving Renee Jennings behind, stomping her foot in fury.
