Chapter 251: Chapter 251: Murray Family

Naomi Kenway had called Chloe Murray ahead of time, so when she arrived at the Clementine Coleman family’s home, the old butler was already there to greet her. Since Chloe had gone abroad a few years ago, Naomi had visited the Murray family home far less often. The old butler looked at her with a hint of nostalgia as he quickly ushered her inside.

Chloe Murray was sitting on the living room sofa, her eyes fixed on the front door. The moment she saw Naomi Kenway, she stood up, waved, grabbed the crutch beside her, and limped a few steps forward.

Naomi quickly steadied her. "Don’t move around. Here, let me help you sit."

Chloe sat down. She was wearing simple, loose-fitting loungewear, and her lips were a little pale, but that didn’t stop her from flashing a brilliant smile. "I’m fine. It was just a few steps. It doesn’t hurt at all."

The sound of footsteps came from the stairs as Chloe’s mother, Luna Vance, descended, holding the handrail. She was dressed in simple elegance, with very little jewelry. Her smile was as warm as ever, as gentle as flowing water. "What a rare visitor. Nina, you’re here?" She turned and instructed a nearby maid to prepare some desserts, mentioning a few pastries Naomi had loved as a child.

"Hello, Auntie," Naomi said with a nod, and they exchanged a few pleasantries.

Luna was very fond of her and asked how she’d been lately.

About ten minutes later, Luna stood up. A maid helped her into a light coat. "Nina, you and Kara go on and chat," she said. "I won’t disturb you."

"Are you off to the shrine, Auntie?"

’As long as Naomi could remember, Luna had been dedicated to spiritual cultivation. The family’s prayer room was a place she visited daily.’

She smiled and nodded, then left the house with the maid’s assistance.

Chloe relaxed considerably after Luna left. She started telling Naomi about her adventures abroad—stories she couldn’t tell in front of her mother.

To use Luna’s own words, she had sent Chloe abroad to broaden her horizons, not to become "unconventional and rebellious."

"Young Miss." It was Martin Murray’s voice. He still had that timid, cowardly look about him, his back slightly hunched, diminishing his tall frame and draining him of all presence.

He looked weak and easy to bully. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

Of course, that was just an appearance.

Naomi brazenly sized up Martin, her gaze lingering for a moment on his wristwatch.

She couldn’t help but let out a laugh.

Chloe turned her head. "What is it, honey?"

Naomi pulled her gaze away. "It’s just... interesting. An ’unfavored’ illegitimate son, wearing an ill-fitting suit, yet the watch on his wrist is a custom piece from a master watchmaker in Ydria."

Hearing the word "illegitimate son," Martin lowered his head, hiding the shadow in his eyes.

Naomi held out her own hand, revealing a matching watch on her slender wrist. "What a coincidence. I have one too."

Chloe’s expression soured. ’The only reason Luna had been willing to take in him and his sister was a pang of conscience, but that kindness came with a condition: they were to be grateful and act like servants. If they were to ascend to the status of a young master and lady, living a life of luxury or, even worse, competing for the family inheritance...’

She asked, "Who gave that to you? My dad?"

Martin hurriedly covered his watch. "No, it’s not that. This is... it’s a fake. I just saw that everyone at the company dresses so well, so..."

"Out of vanity?" Chloe scoffed, the stud in her full, red lip glinting coldly. "You really know how to disgrace our family. Using a fake? Are you deliberately trying to embarrass the Murrays?"

She snorted. "Just as I thought. Utterly classless."

Chloe had never been so harsh, but her attitude had changed drastically ever since her investigation suggested he and his sister were connected to her car accident. Now, her heart was filled with nothing but disgust and suspicion.

"I-I’m sorry..."

"Don’t stand there playing the victim. Know your place. Are you putting on that miserable face just to disgust me?"

Martin fell silent, his head still bowed.

Chloe asked coldly, "What do you want?"

"There’s a project proposal. Dad wanted me to bring it to you to look over first."

With that, he respectfully handed her the file.

Chloe casually flipped through it. "Looks fine to me." She looked up to hand the file back, but she saw Martin secretly staring at Naomi. His eyes held a greedy, lecherous glint, like some pervert lost in a lewd fantasy.

’Chloe remembered the rumors she’d heard at the company—that Martin was consumed by lust and often used his position to pressure employees for sexual favors.’

Naomi had just put her phone away. The moment she looked up, she caught Martin’s lingering gaze before he had a chance to look away.

Chloe was already on her feet. Before a stunned Martin could react, she lunged forward and grabbed his collar.

She stood around five-foot-eight, and even on a crutch, her presence completely overwhelmed him.

"What are you looking at? What are you looking at with those filthy, disgusting eyes? What filth is going through your mind?" She backhanded him across the face, sending him staggering back.

Chloe had never been easy to deal with; she was famous for her bad temper. The years abroad hadn’t smoothed out her aggressive edges as Luna had hoped. If anything, the free and relaxed environment had only made her more unrestrained. Getting hauled into the police station for a "chat" was a regular event. But she wasn’t some irredeemable monster. It was just that her tolerance for provocation was much lower than most people’s, and unfortunately for them, her punches packed a lot more power.

The two people Chloe valued most were Luna and Naomi, and this bastard Martin had deliberately decided to cross the line right in front of her.

Martin clutched his cheek, his expression a mask of innocence and confusion.

"Still putting on an act for me?" Chloe slapped him again. Her strength was tremendous; blood immediately gushed from Martin’s nose, and he lost his balance, tumbling to the floor.

With a look of disgust, Chloe grabbed a tissue and wiped away the blood that had splattered on her hand. ’If her leg wasn’t injured, she would beat this disgusting bastard to death today.’

Naomi stood off to the side, arms crossed, watching the drama unfold.

"What’s going on here?" An anxious voice cut in. Chloe’s father, Peter Murray, hurried over. When he saw Martin’s wretched state, he gasped, then roared in anger, "Who did this? Martin!"

Martin had already pulled out a silk handkerchief to press against his nose and mouth. He coughed violently. "No, Young Miss... she didn’t mean to. It was all my fault. I upset her and her friend."

"What is the meaning of this, Kara?" Peter’s eyes held an unmistakable note of reprimand.

’A chill went through Chloe’s heart. She had always believed her father loved her and her mother. After that drunken mistake all those years ago, Peter had knelt outside Luna’s door for two days.’

’After he brought the two siblings home, Peter had always acted cold and indifferent toward them, as if he didn’t care about them in the slightest.’

’But after Naomi’s hint, she was finally seeing that his behavior wasn’t indifference at all.’

’Peter’s reprimand wasn’t about disciplining her or teaching her a lesson. He was genuinely hurt—hurting for his only son.’

Chloe sneered. "He’s just a servant. Am I not allowed to hit him a couple of times?"
